Résumé:
In his long career, Umberto Riva (1928-2021), one of the most original Italian architects of the last decades, has developed a personal approach to design, understood as a fundamental part of a broader research that connects painting and architecture, interiors and objects. Lamps, furniture, carpets and graphic design resonate with paintings, installations, buildings, public spaces and domestic interiors, reworking traditional and industrial materials. To retrace this complex artistic exploration, the volume presents Riva’s work in the field of design through sketches, drawings, photographs and other documents from the architect’s archive - many of them unpublished. The result is a mosaic of references, dialogues and artistic connections that give proof of his design experimentation, moved by a restlessness that results in geometric, chromatic and spatial exceptions.

Résumé:
Architecture critic Paul Goldberger tells the story of an extraordinary house on the Atlantic Double Dunes in East Hampton-- ''Blue dream,'' the result of a collaboration between collectors Julie Reyes Taubman and Robert Taubman, architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, builder Ed Bulgin, landscape architect Michael Boucher and designer Michael Lewis, who sought to renew the legacy of modernist architecture and art in the Hamptons. Goldberger offers insight into the complex process by which an architectural idea generated a work that stands as the most striking addition of our time to the roster of architecturally ambitious modernist houses on Long Island. As he notes, "There are relatively few books devoted to the architecture of a single house, but what is clear if you read any of them is that they are stories about clients as much as about architects." So it is with ''Blue dream.'' The Taubmans were inspired by the avant-garde spirit of artists and architects who settled and worked in the Hamptons and set out to create a house like no other, a house whose complex curving forms could only be built using the composite material used to make fighter jets. Iwan Baan's photographic portfolio documents ''Blue dream'' across four seasons. Goldberger’s text is illustrated with images of earlier modernist houses that inspired the project, as well as documentation of the design process involved in the making of ''Blue dream'' itself.

Résumé:
Curious about how Alsop Architects managed to construct that flying, translucent rectangle at the Ontario College of Art and Design? Wonder about the sustainability of the Genzyme Building? The saying "the truth is in the details" reveals an essential quality of architectural design. How a staircase curves, a roof seemingly floats, or a concrete wall illuminates are critical questions for architects looking at or creating new work. You might forgive designers for closely guarding their signature techniques. Fortunately, editors Christine Killory and René Davids culled an amazing collection of the best trade secrets in "Details in contemporary architecture". By looking at the best work of the past two years, the book demonstrates how complicated design problems have been handled by architects to achieve beautiful, functional, innovative, sustainable, and, where necessary, economical results. Including work by David Chipperfield, Herzog and de Meuron, Morphosis, ShoP, and many other well-known firms, "Details in contemporary architecture" extensively explores the common as well as more exotic architectural detailing (screens and walls, doors and windows, roofs, bridges, and stairs) that so often gets lost in the pages and photographs of the design media. "Details in contemporary architecture" is the first volume of a new series entitled "AsBuilt". AsBuilt features details from a representative range of building types and materials of recent built work in America. The series seeks to ground both practice and theory more deeply while fostering a better understanding of the relationships between architectural form and technology.

Résumé:
A visual feast of 500 iconic houses and traditional dwellings from all over the world. "The house book" presents a view of architects and designers responsible for some of the most diverse international houses through the ages. From Hadrian’s Villa to Palladio’s Villa Rotunda and Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye through to the contemporary houses of Richard Rogers and Frank Gehry, it features the widest range of both architect-designed and traditional dwellings. "The house book" presents 500 architects in A-Z order, offering an easily accessible and informative sourcebook for experts as well as readers coming to an architectural survey for the first time. Some of the houses are acknowledged for their role in architectural history, others will be iconic for the individual features or structure, but all are seminal forms of dwelling. The selection ranges from the palaces of kings to the individual huts of the Hutu, but the book illustrates that the essential qualities of the house or dwelling remain greatly unchanged over the centuries. Each architect or designer is represented by a full page reproduction mostly in colour of their most significant house and accompanying text that describes the image and its designer. Each page includes cross-references to other architects working in a similar style, movement or time period. The book also includes an easy-to-use glossary of architectural terms and movements and a directory of houses open to the public.

Résumé:
In ''Vitruvius: Writing the body of architecture,'' Indra Kagis McEwen argued that Vitruvius's first-century BCE treatise ''De architectura'' was informed by imperial ideology, giving architecture a role in the imperial Roman project of world rule. In her sequel, ''All the King's Horses,'' McEwen focuses on the early Renaissance reception of Vitruvius's thought beginning with Petrarch—a political reception preoccupied with legitimating existing power structures. During this ''age of princes'' various signori took over Italian towns and cities, displacing independent communes and their avowed ideal of the common good. Architects, taking up Vitruvius's mantle, designed buildings and other structures for these princes with the intent of celebrating and making their power manifest. Through meticulous descriptions of the work of architects and artists from Alberti to Leonardo, McEwen explains how architecture became an instrument of control in the early Italian Renaissance. She shows how architectural magnificence supported claims to power, a phenomenon best displayed in one of the era's most prominent monumental themes: the equestrian statue of a prince, in which the horse became an emanation of the will of the rider, its strength the expression of his strength.

Résumé:
A detailed and timely look at the resourceful ways wood is being used in some of the world’s most innovative new buildings. Despite its legacy as a traditional building material, timber is experiencing a renaissance as contemporary architects and designers increasingly come to appreciate its sustainability, versatility, and beauty. Lavishly illustrated with over 300 photographs and drawings, "New Wood Architecture" features over 40 contemporary projects from around the world by leading architects including Shigeru Ban, Roberto Briccola, Santiago Calatrava, Steven Holl, Herzog + Partner, Herzog and de Meuron, Peter Hübner, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, and Peter Zumthor. Ruth Slavid examines the innovative ways timber is currently being handled and how its use has been expanded by new technologies and experiments with traditional building methods. Featured topics include wood’s natural properties in rural landscapes; its heritage as a vernacular building material; its pragmatic and cost-efficient properties; its versatility; current technological innovations such as the uses of engineered products, laminates, plywoods, and chipboards; the ways wood can be combined with other materials to enhance its structural properties; and its use as a recycled or “green” material in some of the most beautiful and experimental plans being constructed today.

Résumé:
Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin are the best known of a loosely organized group of Soviet artists known as "Paper architects," who designed much but built little in the early days of Glasnost, in the late 1980s. Many of their elaborate etchings, in which they depicted outlandish, often impossible, structures and cityscapes of allegorical content, were collected in the 1990 book Brodsky – Utkin. Now, with the addition of forty-three new and never-before-published prints, this book is an updated edition. In their designs, by turns funny, cerebral, and deeply human, Brodsky – Utkin borrow from Egyptian tombs, Ledoux's visionary architecture, Le Corbusier's urban master plans, and other historical precedents, collaging these heterogeneous forms in learned and layered scrambles. Underlying the wit and visual inventiveness is an unmistakable moral: that the dehumanizing architecture of the sort seen in Russian cities in the 1980s and 1990s, and elsewhere around the globe, takes a sinister toll. A new preface assesses the works of Brodsky – Utkin and reminds that the greatest art is often born of adversity. Beautifully printed in 300-screen dry-trap duotones by the Steinhauer Press, Brodsky – Utkin is a book for artists, architects, and collectors alike.

Résumé:
''Book of ruins'' offers a survey – not encyclopedic, but substantial – of leading moments when the fact and idea of ruins were taken up by writers, travellers and artists: painters, film makers, landscape architects, and architects. Gathering together short texts and extracts that describe and reflect on ruins, dating from remote antiquity (Scipio shedding tears when viewing the destruction of Carthage) to present times (the ruins of a modern city, portrayed in the film ''Requiem for Detroit''), it provides a perspective upon what the past has meant to different cultures at different times. Following an introductory essay, the book includes 70 entries, chronologically ordered, each including an indicative image (or two), an introductory commentary by the authors, and the text itself. The texts come from designers (from Bernini through Piranesi to David Chipperfield) as well as other artists (John Piper), and from literary figures (Goethe, Wordsworth, Byron and Shelley, Hugo, and Hardy). It concludes by discussing what we do with ruins by way of preservation, conservation, adaptive reuse and appropriation, and contemporary loss and ruin, as illustrated by 9/11 and the Neues Museum and highlighting the continuing relevance of the ruin.

Résumé:
Essays, projects, and interviews will examine emerging forms of sponsorship, new forms of connectivity - technological or social - that produce innovative modes of collaboration, and strategies for cultivating relationships that allow us to rethink typical hierarchies between those in power and those in service. One could argue that the profession of architecture has traditionally been characterized by patronage. Throughout the twentieth century, private clients have enabled architects to develop and realize their most significant work. Today, the landscape of patronage is shifting. While the role of private clients is still central to the survival of the profession, an increasing number of architects and design practitioners are actively cultivating partnerships with not-for-profits, granting agencies, educational institutions, and other public organizations. How are these broader relationships redefining the role of patronage in architecture? Have our current economic, ecological, and political climates provoked architecture to confront its own priorities and assumptions? How can the practice of architecture be shaped not only through relationships of power, but also through strategies of empowerment? How are emerging practitioners today grappling with issues of inclusion and exclusion in the field?
