Résumé:
During the pandemic, 45 people were invited to take part in a "serious game": each participant selected the image of a personal object of fascination, out of which a shape was extracted, redrawn, scaled and sent to a CNC machine to be cut out of a 5 mm thick aluminium sheet and become a low table. Each table is here presented through the original image that generated it, the selected contour, a text by its author and photographs of the prototype taken by Maxime Delvaux and printed in silver. 'Objects of Fascination' explores digital technology and craftsmanship through found forms. It can be seen as a collection of personal worldviews by an emerging generation of architects, as much as an attempt to give a physical form to the multiplicity of our collective cultural background.

This publication project was realised by the 2019–2021 fellows of the Graduate School programme at the Berlin University of the Arts: Yalda Afsah, Salwa Aleryani, Neslihan Arol, Anthony R. Green, Mariam Mekiwi, Rindon Johnson, and R A Walden. The intricacies of building societal, historical, corporeal, and environmental justices today in theory and praxis make the common denominator among their sonic, visual, filmic, theatrical, literal, sculptural, and installation oriented researches. Intersections, collapses, overlaps and resonances among their voices make this publication a unique artist book that questions the agency of imagination in the artistic, discursive and political realms. Imagine something new, like justice is also an investigation of transdisciplinarity in collective methodology where artist fellows, publisher, designer, editor, and coordinator took steps further their designated labor division roles.

Highlighting episodes from preindustrial England, New York City and Chicago between the 1850s and the early 1900s, Weimar-era Berlin, and neoliberal Milan, Álvaro Sevilla-Buitrago shows how capitalist urbanization has eroded the egalitarian, convivial life-worlds around the commons. The book combines detailed archival research with provocative critical theory to illuminate past and ongoing struggles over land, shared resources, public space, neighborhoods, creativity, and spatial imaginaries. This volume underscores the ways urbanization shapes the social fabric of places and territories, lending particular awareness to the impact of planning and design initiatives on working-class communities and popular strata. Projecting history into the future, it outlines an alternative vision for postcapitalist urban planning, in which the structure of collective spaces is ultimately defined by the people who inhabit them.

Résumé:
The importance of Marshall McLuhan and his communication theories cannot be overstated, but his written works—dense, at times even daunting— are more often cited than read. Nonetheless, his predictions have been borne out: in the early 1960s, McLuhan wrote that visual, individualistic print culture would be replaced by what he called "electronic interdependence," creating a new "global village" characterized by a collective identity with a tribal base. Novelist Douglas Coupland regards the celebrated academic as primarily an artist, a kind of performance artist offering profound but sometimes obscure insights into how technology was reshaping the world and its inhabitants. Coupland — prolific novelist, sculptor, visual artist, theatre performer — is a true child of McLuhan, whose body of work examines and often embodies McLuhan's famous aphorism that "the medium is the message."

Résumé:
Kolo Moser was one of the most important universal artists in fin-de-siècle Vienna and is one of the leading representatives of Art Nouveau. His oeuvre includes painting, graphics, and crafts, as well as designs for fashion, lighting, and furniture, stage decoration, stained glass windows, book illustrations, and even banknotes. Blazing a trail for the art of his age, he was a founding member of the Vienna Secession and, together with the architect Josef Hoffmann and the industrialist Fritz Wärndorfer, he established the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903. The objective of this collective of fine artists was to realize the Gesamtkunstwerk or total work of art at the highest caliber of arts and crafts. Some 400 objects, presented systematically and explained with essays, open up a new perspective on his impressive oeuvre.

Résumé:
Stemming from the timely spring 2019 group exhibition at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, ''Producing Futures: A Book on Post-Cyber-Feminisms'' focuses on feminist concerns in the post-internet era. While in the 1990s cyber-feminism—a term coined by artist collective VNS Matrix—celebrated the cyberspace as a place of liberation and empowerment, one is now confronted with the fact that, rather, it multiplied and enforced existing hierarchies and power structures. Thus the question remains of whether the cyberspace can be appropriated when striving for gender justice, emancipation and social equality. As the virtual world(s) and real life are increasingly merging, artists reflect on and productively alienate the tools and platforms on hand to produce a future that is worth living in—offline and online.

Résumé:
"Moving to Mars" is the first book ever to thoroughly explore the crucial role that design will play in the collective endeavor to travel to and inhabit Mars. A comprehensive overview of both past and current developments in space travel and colonization, it begins with the evolution of the space suit and rocket technology; it then proceeds to explore a wide range of fascinating and never-before-seen projects on Mars-specific habitations, covering everything from space-ready cutlery to clothes, furniture and speculative habitats. Illustrated with colour images of rarely seen drawings, concepts and prototypes, plus newly commissioned essays by the designers, artists and scientists who are charting the path forward to Mars, this book literally reveals a whole new future for humankind, fleshing out a vision of an everyday reality on another planet.

Résumé:
Our daily lives, our culture, and our politics are now shaped by the digital condition, in which greater numbers of people are engaged in negotiating meaning in ever more dimensions of life, from the trivial to the profound. They are making use of a complex communication infrastructure, currently dominated by social mass media such as Twitter and Facebook, on which they have come to depend.Amidst a confusing plurality, Felix Stalder argues that there are three key constituents of this condition: the use of existing cultural materials for one’s own production, the way in which new meaning is established as a collective endeavor, and the underlying role of algorithms and automated decision-making processes that give shape to massive volumes of data. These three characteristics define what Stalder calls “the digital condition.”
