Résumé:
Dystopic imagery has figured prominently in modern depictions of the urban landscape. The city is often portrayed as a terrifying world of darkness, crisis, and catastrophe. Noir Urbanisms traces the history of the modern city through its critical representations in art, cinema, print journalism, literature, sociology, and architecture. It focuses on visual forms of dystopic representation--because the history of the modern city is inseparable from the production and circulation of images--and examines their strengths and limits as urban criticism. Contributors explore dystopic images of the modern city in Germany, Mexico, Japan, India, South Africa, China, and the United States. Their topics include Weimar representations of urban dystopia in Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis; 1960s modernist architecture in Mexico City; Hollywood film noir of the 1940s and 1950s; the recurring fictional destruction of Tokyo in postwar Japan's sci-fi doom culture; the urban fringe in Bombay cinema; fictional explorations of urban dystopia in postapartheid Johannesburg; and Delhi's out-of-control and media-saturated urbanism in the 1980s and 1990s. What emerges in Noir Urbanisms is the unsettling and disorienting alchemy between dark representations and the modern urban experience.

Résumé:
Unpublished photographs taken by Josef Albers during his travels to Mexico with Anni in the 1930s and 50s. Josef and Anni Albers began their travels to Mexico in 1935, drawn to a country very unlike the United States. They were not in search of the exotic but rather of the traces of ancient pre-Colombian civilisations (the Mayans and the Aztecs) and testimonies of the everyday lives of a population that was very poor yet full of vitality. Dressed in dark colours and donning a large black hat, Albers was a non-professional photographer with the gaze of an architect, as may be noted from the great sense of composition and the search for geometries which he digs out even from the millenary archaeological findings. These photographs have never previously been published in Italy, and contribute to depicting the figure of one of the greatest innovators of the art and culture of the twentieth century, who to this day still has a lot to teach us. The volume also features an introduction by Brenda Danilowitz, curator and head of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, as well as an essay by Luca Galofaro, architect (LSGMA) and curator (CAMPO, Rome).

Résumé:
Agnes Martin’s (1912–2004) celebrated grid paintings are widely acknowledged as a touchstone of postwar American art and have influenced many contemporary artists. Martin’s formative years, however, have been largely overlooked. In this revelatory study of Martin’s early artistic production, Christina Bryan Rosenberger demonstrates that the rapidly evolving creative processes and pictorial solutions Martin developed between 1940 and 1967 define all her subsequent art. Beginning with Martin’s initiation into artistic language at the University of New Mexico and concluding with the reception of her grid paintings in New York in the early 1960s, Rosenberger offers vivid descriptions of the networks of art, artists, and information that moved between New Mexico and the creative centers of New York and California in the postwar period. She also documents Martin’s exchanges with artists including Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko, among others. Rosenberger uses original analysis of Martin’s art, as well as a rich array of archival materials, to situate Martin’s art within the context of a dynamic historical moment. With a lively, innovative approach informed by art history and conservation, this fluidly written book makes a substantial contribution to the history of postwar American art.
