Résumé:
This book presents 27 years of Deanna Dikeman photographing her parents waving goodbye as she left their home after a visit. Just as she was driving away, Dikeman invariably pointed her camera at her parents. What started with a candid snapshot in 1991 turned into a ritual over the years. The book chronicles their farewells as seasons change and years go by, separating black and white photographs from colour photographs. "Leaving and waving" — which was originally part of a larger body of work entitled "Relative moments" — is a heartfelt exploration of family, the passage of time and the sadness of leaving.

Résumé:
Famed as the birthplace of that icon of twentieth-century architecture, the skyscraper, Chicago also cultivated a more humble but no less consequential form of modernism--the private residence. ''Modern in the middle: Chicago houses 1929-75'' explores the substantial yet overlooked role that Chicago and its suburbs played in the development of the modern single-family house in the twentieth century. In a city often associated with the outsize reputations of Frank Lloyd Wright and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the examples discussed in this illustrated book expand and enrich the story of the region's built environment.

Wood has a long history as a building material, and for a while it seemed as if its final chapter ended during the 1950s. But things turned out differently. Today a true renaissance in timber construction is underway, and in many places it is finding expression in urban contexts. Wood buildings are appearing in ever-greater numbers, heights and typologies, from industrial buildings and museums to sports halls. Timber construction has long since liberated itself from the cliché of single-family countryside cottages. Thanks to new technologies and methods, wood has become a popular building material – conserving resources and offering a promising future.

This important book explores geometry as a means of approximating landscape and urban forms. In recent years, Carlos Ferrater's architecture studio has regularly and continuously developed new avenues for formal expression. This collection of projects comprises a family of independent experiences, joined by a common logic of design approximation: Geometry as a means of approximating landscape and urban forms. The book is divided into three parts: The time of Geometry, Research Process and Ideographical Resources. This framework aims to define the conditions whereby the job of architecture is to move from geometry to space by means of construction.

Yoshio Futagawas photographic homage to two single-family residences in São Paulo designed by architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha allows an intimate look at domestic life shaped by the contrast between exposed concrete surfaces and lush natural surroundings. Designed and built in the early 1970s, both houses are archetypal examples of the so-called Brazilian Brutalism style for which the architect is famous. At the time, they became a laboratory for the architects political beliefs as he developed a language and spatiality of his own. Besides their remarkable aesthetic expression, the houses feature unique solutions related to the organisation of the programme.

Long the most infamous street in America, in recent years Forty-second Street has been remade into a sanitized tourist haven. In the forced disapearance of peep shows and street hustlers to make room for a Disney store, a childreen's theater, and large, neon-lit cafés, Samuel R. Delany sees a disapearance, not only of the old Time Square, but of the complex social relationships that developed there. Times Square Red, Times Square Blue paints a portrait of a society dismantling the institutions that promote communication between classes and disguising its fears of cross-class contact as 'family values'.

Seamlessly weaving together film criticism and memoir, Casablanca moves between Augé's insights into the filmgoing experience and his reflections on his own life, the collective trauma of France's wartime history, and how such events as the fall of Paris, the exodus of refugees, and the Occupation-all depicted in the film-were lived and are remembered.
