Résumé:
The Swedish artist couple Mamma Andersson and Jockum Nordstrom have been at the forefront of contemporary figurative painting since the late 1980s. Updating Vuillard for a post-Hitchcock age, Andersson paints beguilingly eerie untenanted interiors and landscapes. Nordstrom's detailed collages, paintings and drawings occupy a more folkloric realm peopled by historical and contemporary characters enacting sexual and social roles across broad narrative panoramas. This publication showcases Andersson and Nordstrom's work from the late 1980s to the present day in over 200 full-color plates. Alongside these, it also includes family snapshots and source materials, a poem by Stig Claesson and an interview with Nordstrom by Marcel Dzama.

While studying under Kiyoji Otsuji, she crossed paths with Shinzo Shimao, who would later become her husband. In 1978, Ushioda and Shimao had a daughter and got married. The next year, the family moved into a single-room unit in a historic Western-style house. In this intimate setting, she continued to photograph, resulting in a wealth of images with a nostalgic familiarity and refined calmness. Published as a set of two books, this collection can be considered the starting point to her photography.

Résumé:
The issue of gender inequality in architecture has been part of the profession’s discourse for many years, yet the continuing gender imbalance in architectural education and practice remains a difficult subject. This book seeks to change that. It provides the first ever attempt to move the debate about gender in architecture beyond the tradition of gender-segregated diagnostic or critical discourse on the debate towards something more propositional, actionable and transformative. To do this, A Gendered Profession brings together a comprehensive array of essays from a wide variety of experts in architectural education and practice, touching on issues such as LGBT, age, family status, and gender-biased awards.

Casa Beires (1973–76) was built in northern Portugal by Álvaro Siza as a family home, its ochre plaster, unusual layout, and generous fenestration indicative of the direction his architecture would take in the coming years. For this book the architect invited Luís Ferreira Alves to photograph the home after 40 years of inhabitation. No major works or restorations had been done in the meantime, and although the site has become overgrown and cracks and water damage blemish many of the interior spaces, one can easily imagine what a grand residence it once was – and could be again. The soft, filtered daylight and cluttered rooms lend Siza’s architecture a human touch.

Résumé:
The new average family is merely a basic outline of the different possibilities that have appeared in recent years. Given the wide variety of living situations today, the dwelling aims to satisfy needs regarding use, lease, cohabitation, and temporality. By way of this inquiry into the collective now, we become increasingly distanced from the average dwelling and propose new ways of living together – an option which embraces complexity. Here the magazine draws a timeline in the collective housing of the 21st century in which three generations of project types coexist, reflecting varying degrees of complexity: a diversity of types, the best of two worlds, and reducing individual space.

A study of PREVI after more than three decades since its formulation seeks not only to salvage the original construction along the lines of an 'archaeological' survey, which reclaims the authorial oeuvre hidden behind the constant interventions on the part of its occupants, but aims to call into question the idea of housing as a habitational solution, the role of the architect in the process and the materials of the design as scarce resources. To salvage the idea of neighbouring units, the rapport between public and communal space, the values and possibilities of a more open city planning and the different family structures against the actual standardisation of the user.

From his south-facing view we see a 'tischtennisplatte' or ping pong table used for a plethora of purposes – including a sun bed, a laundry counter, a kids' climbing frame, an exercise site, a family lunch spot, a refuge from busy streets, among various other uses – except from table tennis. Tomiyasu spent five years documenting the humble table and thanks to his sustained curiosity we observe the idiosyncrasies of human behaviour and social habits, as seasons change, scenes mutate and people come and go.

Résumé:
Located in the Pacific Palisades, the Kappe Residence was designed and built in 1965–67 by American architect and educator Ray Kappe. As Takashi Yanai writes in his essay, Kappe is ''a quiet giant within the local architectural community''. The house he designed for himself and his family follows a long tradition of forward-thinking residences that celebrate the temperate climate and inventive spirit of Los Angeles. Yoshio Futagawa's photographs reflect its perfect example of how a house can be so grounded in place, yet poetic in its spaces and materiality. The challenging site, with its underground springs and steep slope, speaks to Kappe's genius. With an interview by Thom Mayne.

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier (1887–1965), is famous for transforming 20th-century architecture and urbanism. Less attention has been paid to his artistic production, although he began his career as a painter. Le Corbusier indeed studied under Charles L’Éplattenier and, together with the artist Amédée Ozenfant, founded the Purist movement in the manifesto After Cubism. Even after Le Corbusier turned to architecture, he continued to paint and draw. His thousands of drawings, rarely exhibited but meticulously stored in two watch cabinets from his family home, were particularly significant; he considered his work as a draftsman to be fundamental to his creative process.
