Résumé:
In this poignant and acclaimed novel about the beauty of lost things, the protagonist traces the lives of four elderly German/Jewish exiles. The Emigrants is composed of four long narratives which at first appear to be the straightforward accounts of the lives of several Jewish exiles in England, Austria, and America. The narrator literally follows their footsteps, studding each story with photographs and creating the impression that the reader is poring over a family album. But gradually, Sebald's prose, which combines documentary description with almost hallucinatory fiction, exerts a new magic, and the four stories merge into one. Illustrated throughout with enigmatic photographs.

This instalment invites Adam Caruso, who established Caruso St John Architects with Peter St John in 1990. Since then, the practice has built throughout Europe, with projects ranging in scale from major urban developments and cultural venues to interventions in complex historic settings. Caruso reflects on his experiences growing up in Montreal and visiting Mount Royal every week with his family, the mountain located directly west of downtown and one of the city’s largest greenspaces.

Résumé:
This slim volume examines the architecture of the new ''Experimenta Science Center in Heilbronn'' from three different perspectives. Seen in terms of urban history, this building—designed by Berlin-based firm Sauerbruch Hutton—simultaneously stands as an icon and a tool for change. As a construction, it follows its own experimental path, both in organizational, structural and ecological terms. Finally, the project is the late offspring of a typological family of spiral buildings which stretches from antiquity via the modern movement up to the present. All three perspectives are captured in Florian Heilmeyer’s concise and lucid texts and are illustrated by numerous photos and drawings.

Résumé:
A study of PREVI after more than three decades since its formulation seeks not only to salvage the original construction along the lines of an 'archaeological' survey, which reclaims the authorial oeuvre hidden behind the constant interventions on the part of its occupants, but aims to call into question the idea of housing as a habitational solution, the role of the architect in the process and the materials of the design as scarce resources. To salvage the idea of neighbouring units, the rapport between public and communal space, the values and possibilities of a more open city planning and the different family structures against the actual standardisation of the user.

Résumé:
The issue of gender inequality in architecture has been part of the profession’s discourse for many years, yet the continuing gender imbalance in architectural education and practice remains a difficult subject. This book seeks to change that. It provides the first ever attempt to move the debate about gender in architecture beyond the tradition of gender-segregated diagnostic or critical discourse on the debate towards something more propositional, actionable and transformative. To do this, A Gendered Profession brings together a comprehensive array of essays from a wide variety of experts in architectural education and practice, touching on issues such as LGBT, age, family status, and gender-biased awards.

Casa Beires (1973–76) was built in northern Portugal by Álvaro Siza as a family home, its ochre plaster, unusual layout, and generous fenestration indicative of the direction his architecture would take in the coming years. For this book the architect invited Luís Ferreira Alves to photograph the home after 40 years of inhabitation. No major works or restorations had been done in the meantime, and although the site has become overgrown and cracks and water damage blemish many of the interior spaces, one can easily imagine what a grand residence it once was – and could be again. The soft, filtered daylight and cluttered rooms lend Siza’s architecture a human touch.

Résumé:
The new average family is merely a basic outline of the different possibilities that have appeared in recent years. Given the wide variety of living situations today, the dwelling aims to satisfy needs regarding use, lease, cohabitation, and temporality. By way of this inquiry into the collective now, we become increasingly distanced from the average dwelling and propose new ways of living together – an option which embraces complexity. Here the magazine draws a timeline in the collective housing of the 21st century in which three generations of project types coexist, reflecting varying degrees of complexity: a diversity of types, the best of two worlds, and reducing individual space.

Résumé:
Labrador - Photographs by Bob Mesher Labrador is one of the last mysterious and virtually inaccessible territories of the North - or so have the European and American explorers claimed over the centuries, as Danielle Schaub writes in the introduction. In this book, the first album of photographs published by an Inuit from Nunavik, Bob Mesher offers an "insider's" vision of the fascinating land where he was born, following the journey that his family had begun from Northern Quebec to Paradise River. Having returned to Kuujjuaq, as a university graduate and the publisher of Makivik Magazine, Bob Mesher is committed to documenting Northern Quebec and Labrador through thousands of photographs.
