Black gold. Liquid sunlight. Texas tea. Oil remains the ur-commodity of our global era, having been distilled from ancient algae and marine life to turn modernity's wheels. Wars are fought over it. Some communities are displaced by its extraction, so that others may reap its benefits. But despite its heated history, few will ever see oil on the ground. Shrouded within a labyrinth of oil fields, pipelines, and manufacturies, it tends to be known only through its magical effects: the thrill of the road, the euphoria of flight, and the metamorphic allure of everything from vinyl records to celluloid film and synthetic clothing. Michael Tondre shows how hydrocarbon became today's pre-eminent power. How did oil come to structure selfhood and social relations? And to what extent is oil not only a commercial product but a cultural one-something shaped by widely imagined dreams and desires? Amid a warming world unleashed by fossil fuels, oil appears as a rich resource for thinking about histories of globalization and technology no less than the energetic underpinnings of literature, film, and art.

Résumé:
It is impossible to overstate the importance of Lincoln Kirstein (1907-1996) to the arts in America. One of the rare talents who touched the entire artistic field of his time – ballet, film, literature, theater, painting, sculpture, photography, architecture – he is perhaps best known for bringing the choreographer George Balanchine to the United States, and for founding with him the supremely influential School of American Ballet and the New York City Ballet. Kirstein was also a persuasive and lucid writer who published over 500 books, articles and monographs. Now, in honor of the centennial of Kirstein’s birth, Eakins Press presents the most comprehensive bibliography ever of his huge literary output, annotated, indexed and categorized into Fiction; Poetry; Drama and Ballet Libretti; On Dance; On Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Architecture; On Photography; On Film; On Literature, History, Politics and other Subjects; and Memoir. This impressive work includes selected excerpts and a chronology of a life which, as Hilton Kramer wrote in the New York Times, “has helped to shape some of the most valuable parts of our culture.”

«I was not sure I would make a film ever again. I spent many years dreaming of pigs that could walk up walls. I was living completely debased, like a tramp and a criminal. I had turned into a bastard with no home or friends. One day I started to dream of nuns. I began to imagine nuns dancing in the sky and riding bicycles in the clouds. I knew the nuns wew testing their faith. On one occasion three of my teeth fell into a sandwich that I was eating. It felt like the right time to care again. I asked my brother to help me. He introduced me to a famous boxer who was good with medecine, he put my teeth back in my mouth. The nuns were testing me as well, this much I was sure of. I made this film out of the ashes of the broken nation, and it was there that I discovered that a little faith can go a long, long way.» Harmony Korine

Résumé:
Architecture and music share many parallel and intersecting elements. Recent developments in the music, film, and media industries have given rise to new building types for audio and visual media. These projects require a comprehensive approach from various disciplines to bridge architecture, art and technology. For more than 10 years studio bau:ton has been pre-eminently involved in drawing together these diverse disciplines. This book is an eclectic survey of issues central to building for contemporary media. Renowned guest authors from the fields of media and architecture have contributed ideas and projects, and an detailed overview of architectural acoustics serves as an integrated technical guide. Practical applications are presented in an illustrated portfolio of distinguished projects by studio bau:ton, ranging from museums to recording studios and film production facilities. Projects like the Fox Scoring Stage in Los Angeles or Bad Animals in Seattle are complemented by international examples such as Sony Music in Tokyo, X-Art in Austria and many more. Peter Grueneisen is the principal architect and a founder of studio bau:ton.
