Résumé:
The great Italian architect, designer, theorist and printmaker Aldo Rossi (1931–97) galvanized the postmodernist architectural movement in the middle of the 20th century with his unique synthesis of influences such as Adolf Loos, Giorgio de Chirico and Soviet architecture. From his publication Architecture of the City (1966) to his 1976 exhibition Analogous City, Rossi spent a decade developing a theory of urban design that focused on the “collective memory” of a city as an essential element of its urban planning and gave consideration to how buildings and urban areas age over time. Here, Rossi’s theory is applied to his own works from that period, both built and unbuilt, in a careful selection of 23 projects that express this memory-based paradigm of civic existence and construction. Aldo Rossi: The Urban Fact thus unifies Rossi’s theory and practice, demonstrating the visionary dimension driving his singular brand of postmodernism.

Over the course of a half-century, the photographs of René Burri (1933–2014) have tracked the turning points, triumphs and crises of the twentieth century. Whether it was the 15-year-old Burri's portrait of Winston Churchill or his later portrayals of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Richard Nixon, Anwar as-Sadat or Muammar al-Gaddafi, all have lodged themselves in the collective consciousness. Removed from sensationalism yet no less striking are Burri's images of the theater of war, of people suffering in poverty and calamity. And as if to hold such horrors in check, Burri turned his lens with equal intensity to the spheres of beauty and creativity—to the landscapes of Latin America, to great artists such as Picasso and Maria Callas, and to luminaries of architecture such as Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. This two-volume collection offers an extensive compilation of images from the eminent photojournalist.

Résumé:
Thomas E. Rinaldi captures the brilliant glow of surviving early- and mid-twentieth-century neon signs, those iconic elements of the cityscape now in danger of disappearing. This visual tour features two hundred signs, identified by location, with information on their manufacture, date of creation, and the businesses that commissioned them. In a generously illustrated introduction, drawing on documents including rare period trade publications, Rinaldi recounts the development of signage and the technological evolution of neon and examines its role in the streets of New York, in America's cultural identity, and in our collective consciousness. New Yorkers and visitors to the city, neon-sign enthusiasts, and those interested in signs and historic advertising generally, as well as design professionals, serious historians, and casual students of the city, will want this colorful book, which comes at a critical moment when the disappearance of the original signs has inspired a growing interest in neon.

Résumé:
These 659 posters, assembled for the first time in one album, offer a veritable journey through Québec’s social history and political imagination of the past four decades. This book is the result of a collaboration between the founders of the Centre de recherche en imagerie populaire (CRIP) and the publisher of Cumulus Press. This collection of union, political, community, feminist, sociocultural and anti-globalization posters brings to our collective memory the popular struggles that have marked the history of social movements in Québec. It gives a voice to those who, through the strength of their commitment and creativity, have contributed to a more humane, just and democratic world. These images taken from the streets are much more than a mirror of our combined aspirations: they are an invitation to move ever forward. The posters portray demanding, accusatory, irreverent and hopeful actions and offer as many original—sometimes radical—proposals on how to improve the lives of our society’s downtrodden, mistreated, exploited and marginalized groups and individuals.

Résumé:
Factories, farms, and ecosystems all generate mountains of unused material every day. These materials—often viewed as useless leftovers —actually have rich, untapped creative potential. The artist collective Learning Group created several art projects that explore these possibilities, and [Collecting systems] presents these projects in images and words. Members of Learning Group traveled to three different urban environments—Chicago; Monterrey, Mexico; and Mikado, Japan — and built structures that incorporated waste objects in unexpected and fascinating ways. Whether a cardboard house modeled after the structure of sea urchin shells, a wearable walking city, or two houses made of plastic bottles and other gathered materials, their projects recycle trash into treasure. The authors investigate the social issues connected to these projects, such as economics, labor, property rights, and environmental conditions, and they propose innovative courses of action on these issues. In an increasingly disposable world, [Collecting systems] is a compelling look at how we can use the materials around us to their fullest potential.
