Résumé:
Many schools have to contend with the tension between an inflexible building and constantly changing requirements for use. With this in mind, WiMBY! (Welcome into My Backyard!, a Rotterdam-based organization for revitalizing post-war housing areas) commissioned three designers to develop "SchoolParasites" as an attractive alternative to the usual trailer-type provisional classrooms. "SchoolParasites" are provisional structures, flexible in application and striking in design; the first three were erected in the Rotterdam suburb of Hoogvliet in spring 2004. The aim of the program is to put these models into production and to make them available to every school in the Netherlands and abroad. Not the Trailer documents the designs of Barend Koolhaas, Onix, and Christoph Seyferth. It also considers far-reaching questions on the interaction of education and architecture, on the inventiveness of the schools themselves, on permanence and temporariness, and on how intelligent, flexible solutions can play a role in the restructuring of post-war urban areas.

Résumé:
The Technical Schools complex in Groningen was designed in 1922 by the then director of technical education, civil engineer Jan Gerko Wiebenga, in collaboration with the Rotterdam architect Leendert Cornelis van der Vlugt. The original complex comprised a secondary and a junior secondary technical school plus two rows of workshops and laboratories and various outbuildings in between. Wiebenga’s decision to construct the schools in concrete was unusual in that at the time this method of construction was considered suitable only for industrial buildings. The materialization, column structure and window bands all gave the building an unprecedentedly modern appearance. Over the years, the buildings have been radically altered, partially demolished and extended. The Wiebenga complex has recently been renovated, restored and completely adapted to modern educational requirements. Every effort was made to enhance the identity of the original buildings of what is now officially recognized as a modern national monument and the architectural design of the conversion is closely related to the principles of the original concept.

Résumé:
Minor White, Aaron Siskind, and Harry Callahan carved out a new role for photographers and their art in the decades after World War Two. "Photography as a way of life" traces how these influential teachers and theorists reimagined the medium as a livelihood and a life’s work. Together with growing markets for snapshots and photojournalism, the postwar years saw the emergence of photography as an established field of study in higher education. In this beautifully produced book, Brendan Fay takes readers from the late 1940s through the 1970s to explore how White, Siskind, and Callahan transformed the ways photography was taught, shown, and understood. Inclined toward abstraction and personally expressive images, they modeled a commitment to art in the face of commercial and professional pressures. In classrooms and private workshops and through exhibitions, photobooks, and magazines—including Aperture, with White as its founding editor—they offered training and inspiration while building a devoted audience for their pictures.

Résumé:
The history of the book in Tibet involves more than literary trends and trade routes. Functioning as material, intellectual, and symbolic object, the book has been an instrumental tool in the construction of Tibetan power and authority, and its history opens a crucial window onto the cultural, intellectual, and economic life of an immensely influential Buddhist society.Spanning the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, Kurtis R. Schaeffer envisions the scholars and hermits, madmen and ministers, kings and queens who produced Tibet's massive canons. He describes how Tibetan scholars edited and printed works of religion, literature, art, and science and what this indicates about the interrelation of material and cultural practices. The Tibetan book is at once the embodiment of the Buddha's voice, a principal means of education, a source of tradition and authority, an economic product, a finely crafted aesthetic object, a medium of Buddhist written culture, and a symbol of the religion itself.

Résumé:
The spread of Renaissance culture in England coincided with the birth of the profession of architecture, whose practitioners soon became superior to simple builders in social standing and perceived intellectual prowess. This book, which focuses in particular on the scientist, mathematician, and architect Sir Christopher Wren, explores the extent to which this new professional identity was based on expertise in the mathematical arts and sciences. Featuring drawings, instruments, paintings, and other examples of the material culture of English architecture, the book discusses the role of mathematics in architectural design and building technology. It begins with architectural drawing in the 16th century, moves to large-scale technical drawing under Henry VIII, considers Inigo Jones and his royal buildings and Christopher Wren and the dome of St. Paul’s, and concludes with the architectural education of George III. Interweaving text and visual image, the book investigates the boundaries between art and science in architecture—the most artistic of the sciences and the most scientific of the arts.

Résumé:
This book presents an essential selection from the portfolio of Emilio Duhart H. (1917-2006), a pivotal figure in Chilean architecture. Interweaving episodes from his life and work with the expansion of the modern movement as a global phenomenon, this chronicle places Duhart at the center of an ongoing dialogue between the universal precepts of modernism and the specificities of the Chilean cultural landscape. From his early contact with Walter Gropius in the 1940s to his collaboration with Le Corbusier in the 1950s, Duhart crafted an architectural narrative that not only adopted the ideas of modernism but transformed them, translating them into a language deeply tied to the local circumstances. Duhart’s personal and professional trajectory offers a fascinating perspective for understanding the global expansion of modern architecture, exploring themes central to its dissemination, such as migration, education, social class, housing, and urban challenges. In this light, his life and work are presented as a matrix rich in connections, capable of dialogue with other emblematic cases worldwide.

Résumé:
This publication collects and preserves the ideas put forward during the symposium "A Model: Reimagining Museums," which took place at Mudam – The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg, in June 2024.?The convening explored the mission of museums today and examined how contemporary institutions can continue to serve as sources of culture, preservation, education, and community in the future. The symposium marked the final chapter of a broader program dedicated to examining the museum as a model. The series was introduced by "A Model," a three-part exhibition curated by Bettina Steinbrügge that reflected on the role of the museum in the twenty-first century, reaffirming the need to consider the institutions a dynamic, living place, sensitive and receptive to contemporary debates. It also considered the possibilities that arise when museum collections are reimagined as active and performative environments. More than thirty artists were involved – some conceiving new commissions, others responding to works in Mudam’s collection.

Résumé:
Conceived by architect Charles W. Moore and begun in the context of social activism and dramatic institutional change during the 1960s, the Yale Building Project has contributed to the education of many of this country’s leading architects, serving as the model for "design-build" programs at universities nationwide. "The Yale Building Project : The First 40 Years" is the first comprehensive history of this important initiative. Every year since 1967, graduate students in the Yale School of Architecture have designed and constructed a building for a community–based client. This book documents each of the projects alongside essays that situate the program in its historical context, from students’ journeys to rural Appalachia to build community centers and a health clinic, to pavilions and recreational structures constructed throughout Connecticut, and affordable housing built in New Haven. Describing a program that has had a profound effect on American architectural culture, this book will serve as a valuable resource for architects, historians, students, and community planners.

Résumé:
Robotics is the fastest-growing and most exciting area of development in architecture and architectural education for a generation, offering new paradigms for design and fabrication. Schools and practices around the world are installing machines, but few have the experience to appreciate the full design potential of their application. "Robot house" features projects produced by the most advanced robotics design studio in the world, often interacting with a wide range of technologies from motion capture to material science—a realm far beyond the capabilities of 3D printing. The book has three central sections: Principles, which sets out the fields and the thinking that underlie the new uses for robotics; Projects, which offers detailed presentations that explore how these principles can be applied and augmented through interactive prototypes and working models; and Platforms, which presents the working tools used for robotic architecture through specially drawn technical illustrations. The introduction frames the current developments in the history of architectural innovation, and the reference section includes a glossary and diagrams.
