Résumé:
Enamoured with the light of the Mediterranean sun, "Can Lis, Jørn Utzon" is a visual ode to one of the most iconic homes of the 20th century. An early ideal for design inspired by place, Can Lis rests on a Mallorcan cliff, nearly concealed by the marés stone from which it was made. Photographs by Simon Watson chart the movement of light along the compound that served as Utzon’s family home for over two decades, his first permanent residence following his work on the Sydney Opera House. A curated selection of archival photographs, sketches, and blueprints mined from Utzon’s private collection guide readers from early plans for Can Lis to the everyday ways the home was inhabited.

Résumé:
Newlyweds on Tour is the first historical study to trace the origins and growth of the American honeymoon between 1820 and 1900. Rather than treating the honeymoon as a simple by-product of the privatization of the family, this work argues that it was formed at the interstices between (and helped to articulate) a variety of narratives—patriotic, conjugal, sentimental, and sexual that were central to the modern American national identity. To track these narratives, Penner moves between primary accounts of newlywed experiences recorded in diaries and letters in addition to entries in a wide range of textual, visual, and architectural representations matrimonial maps, engravings from the popular press, sensational novels, and palace hotel bridal chambers.

Résumé:
Architectural photographer Jussi Tiainen has skilfully captured in his photographs the versatile nature of concrete, its smoothness and coarseness, strength and sensitivity, hardness and softness, and light and shadow. For this book he has photographed the best of Finnish concrete architecture from recent years – 16 different buildings, ranging from public buildings to a single-family house, and from new buildings to remodelling projects. Among the architects’ offices included are JKMM Architects, Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects, and Heikkinen & Komonen Architects. The article at the beginning of the book by architect Maritta Koivisto, edtior-in-chief of the Finnish journal Betoni [Concrete], opens an interesting angle on the uses of concrete in building and architecture.

Résumé:
Founded in 2008, the French-Lebanese firm of Youssef Tohme Architects and Associates has a delicate signature that takes the regional context as its starting point in developing an individual architectural language. By using a wide variety of materials that interact with the built environment, they create buildings that evolve over time alongside their inhabitants. The book documents twelve of the firm’s projects – from a single-family home to a museum, including urban interventions in Beirut, Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, and Bucharest. The book also includes an essay that takes a comprehensive look at the working methods of this firm, focusing in particular on the dimension of time and the changes that occur as the buildings are used.

Résumé:
Despite the increasing numbers of people who now work from home, in the popular imagination the home is still understood as the sanctuary of privacy and intimacy. Living is conceptually and definitively separated from work. This book argues against such a separation, countering the prevailing ideology of domesticity with a series of architectural projects that illustrate alternative approaches. Less a monograph than a treatise, richly illustrated, the book combines historical research and design proposals to reenvision home as a cooperative structure in which it is possible to live and work and in which labor is socialized beyond the family—freeing inhabitants from the sense of property and the burden of domestic labor.

Résumé:
In The Classical Gardens of Shanghai, Shelly Bryant looks at five of Shanghai’s remaining classical gardens through their origins, changing fortunes, restorations, and links to a wider Chinese aesthetic. Shanghai’s classical gardens are as much text as space; they exist in art, poetry, and literature as much as in stone, rock, and earth. But these gardens have not remained static entities. Rather, they have been remodelled constantly since their inception. This book reflects this process within the constancy of traditional Chinese horticulture and reveals Shanghai’s remaining classical gardens as places representing wealth and social status, social and dynastic shifts, through falling family fortunes and political revolutions to search for a recovery of China’s ancient culture in the modern day.

Résumé:
Richard Anthony Lewis explores Tebbs's life and career, situating his work along the line of plantation imagery from nineteenth-century woodcuts and paintings to later twentieth-century photographs by John Clarence Laughlin, among others. Providing the family lineage and construction history of each home, Lewis discusses photographic techniques Tebbs used in his alternating panoramic and detail views. A precise documentarian, Tebbs also reveals a poetic sensibility in the plantation photos: a frequent emphasis on aspects of decay, neglect, incompleteness, and loss lends a wistful aura compounded by the fact that many of the homes no longer exist. This noticeable ambivalence between objectivity and sentiment, Lewis shows, suggests unfamiliarity and even discomfort with the legacy of slavery.
