Résumé:
Arguing that "first encounters" have already applied traditional theoretical and conceptual frameworks to digital media, the contributors to this book call for "second encounters," or a revisiting. Digital media are not only objects of analysis but also instruments for the development of innovative perspectives on both media and culture. Drawing on insights from literary theory, semiotics, philosophy, aesthetics, ethics, media studies, sociology, and education, the contributors construct new positions from which to observe digital media in fresh and meaningful ways. Throughout they explore to what extent interpretation of and experimentation with digital media can inform theory. It also asks how our understanding of digital media can contribute to our understanding of social and cultural change.

Résumé:
A founder partner of the leading design firm Pentagram, Alan Fletcher is considered by many in the graphic design world to be a contemporary master, known for his sharp and unerring sense of style. From the initial brief to the often award-winning outcome, here are more than a hundred of Fletcher’s design solutions. Grouped into thematic chapters for instructive reference, the projects demonstrate his lithe and lateral jumps, his skills and techniques and his ability to fuse interpretation, aesthetics and function with apparent ease. The commentary shows how each graphic idea was developed, giving insights both into the individual project and into the way in which the design process can be manipulated.

Résumé:
Comprehensive and illuminating, ''Orpheus in the Underworld'' centers on Adorno’s concrete and immediate engagement with musical compositions and their interpretation in the concert hall and elsewhere. Here, Adorno registers his initial encounters with the compositions of the Second Viennese School, when he had yet to integrate them into a broad aesthetics of music. Complementarily essays on Bela Bartók, Jean Sibelius, and Kurt Weill afford insight into his understanding of composers who did not fit neatly into the dialectical schema propounded in the Philosophy of New Music. Additionally, essays on recording and broadcasting show Adorno engaging with these media in a spirit that is no less productive than polemical and focused as sharply on their potentialities as on their shortcomings.

Résumé:
The landscape architecture of the Nordic countries is just appealing for its aesthetics and high quality as modern Scandinavian architecture. Danish and Swedish landscape architects already numered among the European avant-garde in the first half of the last century. While Spain, France and The Nethelands were moving into the focus of interest in recent decades, a new generation of Scandinavian designers created remarkable landscape architecture - with different emphases in the individual countries. "Topos - European Landscape Magazine" reports regularly on new projects. Notable contributions are collected in this volume to provide a survey of current Scandinavian landscape architecture : Swedish and Finnish national landscapes, new squares in Bergen, architecture and landscape in Iceland, power dams in Norway, parks in Denmark ...

Résumé:
"A House in Japan" examines the Japanese home as a site of architectural inquiry—an intimate scale through which ideas about space, structure, and domesticity are continually reimagined. In a context shaped by constraint, precision, and cultural continuity, the residential realm becomes a space of subtle provocation and quiet experimentation. The projects in this volume are not guided by aesthetics alone, but by spatial intelligence. Each home is rigorous in design, elastic in use, and attuned to the rhythms of daily life. "A House in Japan" presents works that privilege clarity over excess and intent over display. It is a study of how architecture, when quietly radical, can propose new ways of living.

Résumé:
After a trip to Japan in 1953, Werner Bläser published his landmark book on Classical Japanese architecture. His studies of 17th-18th-century wooden buildings document minimalist, grid-based structures using stark black-and-white photographs, some color photographs and numerous line drawings. His book, highly prized in terms of design and content, contributed significantly to introducing Japanese aesthetics to Western architecture, art and graphics. Mies van der Rohe, for example, gave it to many of his friends. The reprint is enriched by a text on the history of the book by Christian Blaser, Werner Blaser's son, a contribution by Inge Andritz on Mies van der Rohe and Japanese architecture, and a personal afterword by Tadao Ando.

Pietro Nobile (1776–1854), originally from Ticino in Switzerland, Director of the School of Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, court architect and protégé of the Austrian Chancellor of State Clemens Lothar Metternich, attempts to combine science, mechanics, and aesthetics in architecture. An architect trained both as an engineer and academically, who reformed teaching at the School of Architecture at the Academy in Vienna by reacting to the design methods introduced at the Polytechnic in Paris, and by making academic drawing compulsory for engineers. The publication presents the results of the Italian-Austrian-Czech cooperation, based on the architect’s death estate in Trieste and Bellinzona, Switzerland, as well as materials scattered throughout Europe.

Résumé:
Traditional Japanese packaging is an art form that applies sophisticated design and natural aesthetics to simple objects. Largely constructed of bamboo, rice straw, hemp twine, paper, and leaves, all of the objects shown here are made from natural materials. Through photographs of authentic examples of traditional Japanese packaging—with commentary on the origins, materials, and use of each piece—the items here offer a look into a lost art, while also reminding us of the connection to nature and the human imprint of handwork that was once so alive and vibrant in our everyday lives. This classic book was originally published under the title How to Wrap Five More Eggs in 1975.

Résumé:
With the uprise of mobile devices, the infrastructural needs of the telecommunication industry have exploded, and since the 1980s, cell towers have started to fill the planet. The scenery changed dramatically when an antenna was transformed into an artificial pine tree for the first time in 1992. Since then, this kind of camouflage has evolved into a global phenomenon that raises fundamental questions about the relationship between humans and nature. The images from the series Second Nature focus on cell tower trees that became part of the Southern California landscape. The series depicts these artefacts of the digital age as, in Amy Clarke's words, a societal preference for fake aesthetics over ugly reality.

Catalogue. Exhibition at Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen University, Kingston, Canada, from january to april 2010. Digital information-gathering systems increasingly affect our lives, tracking our movement and consumer preferences. Such sorting daemons subtly reinforce existing streams of influence and create new ones. This publication presents the work of sixteen artists who address the social, psychological, political and aesthetic dimensions of surveillance systems. Writings on the artists and their works are accompanied by critical essays on the culture of surveillance, social sorting, data-aesthetics and our evolving understandings of and participation in surveillance regimes. Participating artists include Antonia Hirsch, Tran T. Kim-Trang, Germaine Koh and Ian Verchere, Michael Lewis, Walid Raad, David Rokeby and Cheryl Sourkes.
