The growth of the number and scale of Chinese museums in the 21st century, from about 1,400 at the turn of the century to over 5,000 to date, reflects the government’s Museum Development Plan for 2011-2020 to open one museum per 250,000 inhabitants, with the goal of attracting one billion visitors at the end of the decade. What are the motivations for the rapid development of museums in China? How is the public responding? Who pays for these museums and how? What has been the impact of china’s urbanization? How do Chinese museums balance education, scientific research, social cohesion, cultural diplomacy and tourism both internal and external? These are issues that continue to be discussed and debated among western museum professionals in the context of our 200 - year history of modern museology. "Voices of the land: Indigenous design and planning from the prairies" produced by the Indigenous Design and Planning Students’ Association (IDPSA), of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. IDPSA was founded in Fall 2019, as a platform to host honest conversations around inclusion and representation. In an effort to broaden the lens of Indigenous design and planning, IDPSA actively seeks to incorporate Indigenous values within the design community through advocating for culturally informed initiatives, programs, and curriculum. This book features 16 Indigenous students, representing a range of nations across Turtle Island, and spanning all four departments (Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, and City Planning) from the Faculty of Architecture. As questions about representation and ethics have increasingly arisen, these institutions have proclaimed their interest in diversity and responsible conservation, asserting both their adaptability and their immovably essential role in a flourishing society. With this book, Shimrit Lee punctures this fantasy, tracing the colonial origins of the concept of the museum. White Europeans’ atrocities were reimagined through narratives of benign curiosity and abundant respect for the occupied or annihilated culture, and these racist narratives, Lee argues, remain integral to the authority—and even the aesthetics—of the contemporary museum. This volume argues that we must face a dismantling of these seemingly eternal edifices, and consider what, if anything, might take their place.

One of the tasks of design education is to help provide the tools, techniques, and methods that enhance constructed imagination. At the same time, the modes and practices of design need to confront the challenges of our contemporary societies. The commitment to societal engagement through design excellence is at the core of the pedagogy at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The book is based on the collection of the VS school museum in Tauberbischofsheim, which houses a unique collection of school furniture from Germany and abroad. Through this collection, it draws out the history of educational theory and school architecture over the past hundred years, tracing the ascent of a child-centered approach to education and attendant developments in design, as well as such topics as the use of propaganda in Soviet- and Nazi-era schools.
