"Modern architecture: The basics" examines technological, stylistic, socio-political, and cultural changes that have transformed the history of architecture since the late 18th century. Broad definitions of modernity and postmodernity introduce the book, which comprises 24 short thematic chapters looking at the concepts behind the development of modern and postmodern architecture. These include major historical movements, key figures, and evolving building typologies. There is also an emphasis on the changing city during the 19th and 20th centuries. Approaches to representation and its impacts on architecture are studied, along with the changing global role of architecture as cultural expression. The book introduces new topics, including gender, race, postcolonialism, and indigeneity.

Urbanism is inherently conflict-driven, as Eve Blau points out in an interview in this issue of ‘MONU’. According to her, because cities are places of power, representation, and contestation, processes of urbanisation involve a certain amount of violence and destruction, which is both positive and negative. Urbanism is inherently conflict-driven, as Eve Blau points out in an interview in this issue of ‘MONU’. According to her, because cities are places of power, representation, and contestation, processes of urbanisation involve a certain amount of violence and destruction, which is both positive and negative. Various authors and perspectives go on to explore this notion in depth. Topics range from the Syrian refugee crisis, where people reshape their places and identities while navigating the complex structures of belonging, to sprawl and emptiness as a chief tool of protection in Australian capital cities and how the youth of Kyiv are returning to life as usual the Ukrainian capital.

Résumé:
The Floor Plan Manual Housing has for decades been a seminal work in the field of architecture. In its 5th, revised and expanded edition, approximately 160 international housing projects built after 1945 are documented and analyzed. The focus is on exemplary and transferrable projects, and on innovative and trendsetting concepts. The systematic representation of all projects allows the reader to compare and evaluate various floor plans – and to be inspired by the wealth of ideas and strategies for one’s own design work. The introductory theoretical and historical essays have been newly written or updated, and offer a structured overview of the residential housing typology and its development.

Résumé:
The Tower of Babel is known for its absence. A landmark of architectural self-doubt, it has survived not as a physical object but through its representation in text and image. But over the last century, the Tower has rematerialized in an enigmatic array of projects that invite reassessment. From Robert Koldewey’s excavations in Mesopotamia, to full-scale reassemblies in Berlin, surrogate reconstructions by Saddam Hussein, and mock ruins built in upstate New York for the US Department of Defense, Dugdale plots this story against the background of recent conflict in Iraq, presenting Babel as a vital challenge to the politics of architecture’s material presence.

This publication pays tribute to two important systems of architectural representation: the model and the photograph. Rescuing over 100 original photographs of outstanding models - some eventually realized, and some that would remain unbuilt - from 20th-century Spain, this volume offers a modern, visual, critical and historiographical discourse on Spanish architecture from this rich period after the First World War. Beyond the analysis of the models’ technical and compositional structure, the book includes sample pictures by photographers such as Francesc Català-Roca, Joaquín del Palacio (Kindel), Juan Pando, Martin Lladó, Oriol Maspons Ubiña Gomez and Ramón Massats, and architects such as José Manuel Aizpurúa, Alejandro de la Sota and Fernando Higueras.

Résumé:
This book is a pioneering effort to insert South Africa's largest city into urban theory on its own terms. The volume's essays include an investigation of representation and self-stylization in the city, an ethnographic examination of friction zones and practices of social reproduction in inner-city Johannesburg, and a discussion of the economic and literary relationship between Johannesburg and Maputo, Mozambique's capital. One contributor considers how Johannesburg's cosmopolitan sociability enabled the anti-colonial projects of Ghandi and Mandela. Journalists, artists, architects, writers, and scholars bring contemporary Johannesburg to life in ten short pieces including reflections on music and megamalls, nightlife, living as foreigners in the city, and built spaces.
