Résumé:
Liam Gillick emerged as part of the generation of "Young British Artists" who energized the British art scene in the 1980s and 1990s. He is now one of the most influential (and perplexing) artists in all of contemporary art. Gillick's discursive mode of art practice—often associated with "relational aesthetics"—complicates object production, embraces the exhibition as medium, and explores the social role and function of art. This reader coincides with a year-long, multi-venue, mid-career retrospective that serves both as a continuous investigation into Gillick's practice and an in-depth study of his work to date. The book offers a range of critical perspectives on artist's work. Introduction by Monika Szewczyk.

Résumé:
It is not a book about colors. It is rather Kenya Hara’s attempt to explore the essence of "White", which he sees as being closely related to the origin of Japanese aesthetics – symbolizing simplicity and subtlety. The central concepts discussed by the author in this publication are emptiness and the absolute void. Good communication is the ability to listen to each other, rather than to press one’s opinion onto the opponent. Kenya Hara compares this form of communication with an "empty container". In visual communication, there are equally signals whose signification is limited, which, like an "empty container," permit signification and do not limit imagination. The Japanese character for white also forms a radical of the character for emptiness.

Résumé:
Designed by Kenzo Tange (1913–2005), the Yoyogi National Gymnasium was completed in 1964. It is situated in an open area in Tokyo and was built for the Olympic Games held that year. The iconic structure, with its elegantly curved roofs suspended from twin masts, is an architectural marvel. Inspired by the Coliseum in Rome, as well as by the architecture of Le Corbusier and Eero Saarinen, Tange adapted Western ideas to meet Japanese aesthetics. In this book, five viewpoints for evaluating the facility are examined in detail. Through the lens of Japanese modernism, it reveals how the structure was made, and how the gymnasium and swimming pool have been used and managed since.

It is an absolutely ubiquitous object, even if most of us have no direct contact with it. But what is this thing? Where has it been, and where is it going? Craig Martin's book illuminates the “development of containerization”-including design history, standardization, aesthetics, and a surprising speculative discussion of the futurity of shipping containers. - See more at: http://www.bloomsbury.com/us/shipping-container-9781501303142/#sthash.2H0oxVN8.dpuf

Résumé:
This publication is the first book to detail Bosworth’s challenges in the planning and construction of MIT’s unique Cambridge campus. MIT professor of architecture Mark Jarzombek provides a fascinating sample of the architectural debates of the time. He examines the competing project proposals—including one from Ralph Adams Cram, noted for his gothic West Point campus—and describes how Bosworth found his classically oriented vision challenged by the engineer John Freeman, a proponent of Frederick W. Taylor’s new principle of scientific management. Jarzombek shows that their conflict ultimately resulted in a far more innovative design than either of their individual approaches would have produced, one that employed new European concepts of industrialism, efficiency, and aesthetics in academic structures.

Exposed Architecture offers an overview of work by young architects in Latin America. Published in collaboration with LIGA, Space for Architecture in Mexico City, it is broken into three parts. The first documents, through images and brief texts, exhibitions that twelve firms from Argentina, Brazil/Uruguay, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and from Portugal created at LIGA’s exhibition space in Mexico. In the second part, six “Studio Interludes” shed light on practice and aesthetics in contemporary Latin American architecture. The third part comprises short essays by Latin American architects, along with two interviews with local figures, looking at key aspects and topics against a backdrop of the many challenges the region poses for the production and communication of architecture.

Résumé:
From 1938 to 1955, Bertolt Brecht created montages of images and text, filling his working journal (Arbeitsjournal) and his idiosyncratic atlas of images, War Primer, with war photographs clipped from magazines and adding his own epigrammatic commentary. In this book, Georges Didi-Huberman explores the interaction of politics and aesthetics in these creations, explaining how they became the means for Brecht, a wandering poet in exile, to “take a position” about the Nazi war in Europe. Illustrated with pages from the Arbeitsjournal and War Primer and contextual images including Raoul Hausmann’s poem-posters and Walter Benjamin’s drawings, The Eye of History offers a new view of important but little-known works by Brecht.

Résumé:
Edmund Burke's "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Sublime and Beautiful" is one of the most important works of aesthetics ever published. Whilst many writers have taken up their pen to write of "the beautiful", Burkes subject here was that quality he uniquely distinguished as "the sublime" - an all-consuming force beyond beauty that compelled terror as much as rapture in all who beheld it. It was an analysis that would go on to inspire some of the leading thinkers of the Enlightenment, including Immanuel Kant and Denis Diderot. The Routledge Classics edition presents the authoritative text of the first critical edition of Burkes essay ever published, including a substantial critical and historical commentary.
