Résumé:
Pinos's architecture of overlay is evident in her design process; her unique models and drawings are complex compositions that reinforce the multifaceted quality of her design. This monograph, the first comprehensive English-language publication of the architect's work, presents extensive visual documentation of twenty-five built and unbuilt works from 1991, the year she founded her own firm, to the present. Pinos is particularly noted for her large-scale architecture-landscape projects, including her most significant current project, the JVC Cultural & Business Center fair area, part of a major project in Guadalajara, Mexico. Among other designs are the pedestrian bridge, Petrer, Alicante; Dunar Park, Matalascanas, Huelva; the Juan Aparicio and Punta Prima waterfonts, Torrevieja, Alicante; and landscape improvements and recreational center, Caldas de Reis, Galicia. Pinos also specializes in sports facilities and schools.

Résumé:
a+u’s October issue features the recent works of the highly acclaimed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Active since the late 1960s, Alvaro Siza continues to build across different regions of the world, and each work of architecture reflects consciousness of the collective values of a place. This sensitivity is evident in different scales and material used, such as Clay Pavilion in Mexico, which recalls traditional construction techniques, and Renovation of the Manor Dos Magalhães, which sculpturally integrates new landscaped terraces with the critical function of the building, yet makes no unnecessary changes to the façade of the ruin. In addition to 16 recent works, architect and writer Nuno Grande composes a “poem to Porto,” which highlights 5 of the most influential projects by Alvaro Siza in his beloved city.

The Mexicans Colectivo C733 have found in the ideas of Eladio Dieste a constant source of inspiration: in their a rational approach to the use of materials, their respect for human effort, and their way of understading the project as a perfectly orchestrated symphony. This philosophy has enabled them to build more than fifty projects across Mexico in just five years, in the context of an ambitious government strategy to improve infrastructures and public spaces in vulnerable contexts. Thanks to a millimetric coordinatoin and a shared view of social innovation and sustainability, C733 has managed to turn each intervention into an example of architecture committed to the environment and the community. This issue features a selection of fifteen projects that reflect the diversity, scale, and impact of their work.

Résumé:
Intrepid Prussian explorer, scientist, diplomat and author Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was reputedly the second best-known person in early nineteenth-century France (Stephen Jay Gould describes him as "probably the world's most famous and influential intellectual [of his time]"), yet he is little known in the US today. From 1799 to 1804, Humboldt traversed about 6,000 miles, journeying through the Spanish American colonies (modern-day Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico and Cuba) to observe nature in the "torrid zone," and later published some 30 volumes about his travels. This catalogue traces the breadth of Humboldt's influence through painting and objects, including work by Albert Bierstadt, Adela Breton, Norton Bush, Frederic Edwin Church, George Catlin, Martin Johnson Heade, Louis Rémy Mignot, Thomas Moran, Johann Moritz Rugendas and Mark Dion.

Résumé:
A building's façade sets the aesthetic tone for its entire design while serving a variety of functions, from regulating light and protecting against the elements to providing insulation for temperature and sound. This book details hundreds of examples of interesting and progressive façades from around the world. Presented in double-page spreads, each façade is photographed from different angles and includes texts that describe their significance. Readers can learn how traditional mashrabiyas in Abu Dhabi are being engineered to respond to light and to regulate heat, how a hospital in Mexico City has been constructed with "smog-eating" tiles, and how a "bio-adaptive" façade in Germany uses algae to generate energy and provide shade. Informative and accessible, this compendium is a highly useful resource for architects, engineers, and designers.

Résumé:
In the decades after World War II, artists and designers of the land art movement used the natural landscape to create monumental site-specific artworks. Second Site offers a powerful meditation on how environmental change and the passage of time alter and transform the meanings—and sometimes appearances—of works created to inhabit a specific place. James Nisbet offers fresh approaches to well-known artworks by Ant Farm, Rebecca Belmore, Nancy Holt, Richard Serra, and Robert Smithson. He also examines the work of less recognized artists such as Agnes Denes, Bonnie Devine, and herman de vries. Nisbet tracks the vicissitudes wrought by climate change and urban development on site-specific artworks, taking readers from the plains of Amarillo, Texas, to a field of volcanic rock in Mexico City, to abandoned quarries in Finland.

Résumé:
Should all-inclusive engagement be the major task of architecture? This publication presents the case that the answer is yes. Through original contributions and case studies, this volume shows that socially engaged architecture is both a theoretical construct and a professional practice navigating the global politics of poverty, charity, health, technology, neoliberal urbanism, and the discipline's exclusionary basis. The scholarly ideas and design projects of 58 thought leaders demonstrate the architect's role as a revolutionary social agent. Exemplary works are included from the United States, Mexico, Canada, Africa, Asia, and Europe. This book offers a comprehensive overview and in-depth analysis of all-inclusive engagement in public interest design for instructors, students, and professionals alike, showing how this approach to architecture can bring forth a radical reformation of the profession and its relationship to society.

Résumé:
The avocado is the iconic food of the twenty-first century. It has gone from a little-known regional food to a social media darling in less than a hundred years. This is an astounding trajectory for a fruit that isn’t sweet, becomes bitter when it is cooked and has perhaps the oddest texture of any fruit or vegetable. But the idea that this rich and delicious fruit is also healthy despite being fatty and energy-dense gives it unicorn status among modern eaters, especially millennials. Through lively anecdotes, colourful pictures and delicious recipes, Jeff Miller explores the meteoric rise of the avocado, from its co-evolution with the megaherbivores of the Pleistocene to its acceptance by the Spanish conquistadores in Mexico and its current dominance of food consumers’ imagination.

Résumé:
Located on a triangular site within the Polanco area of Mexico City, the internationally acclaimed Museo Jumex exhibits a sizable collection of contemporary art—Colección Jumex—and is part of a wider urban redevelopment. The extremely individual quality of the neighboring buildings overrides any attempt to integrate the museum with its surroundings and instead allows for a rare architectural opportunity: the construction of a building that is simultaneously distinct from and complementary to its larger context. This publication delineates the design and construction of the museum, as conceived by the David Chipperfield Architects. It features photographs by Iwan Baan, texts by architecture scholars Miquel Adrià, Patrick Charpenel, Luis Fernández-Galiano and Beatrice Galilee, as well as a conversation between Hans Ulrich Obrist and David Chipperfield on the conceptual basis of the project.

Résumé:
The storybook history of the American West is a male-dominated narrative of drifters, dreamers, hucksters, and heroes--a tale that relegates women, assuming they appear at all, to the distant background. Home Lands: How Women Made the West upends this view to remember the West as a place of homes and habitations brought into being by the women who lived there. Virginia Scharff and Carolyn Brucken consider history's long span as they explore the ways in which women encountered and transformed three different archetypal Western landscapes: the Rio Arriba of northern New Mexico, the Front Range of Colorado, and the Puget Sound waterscape. This book vividly reimagines the West as a setting in which home has been created out of differing notions of dwelling and family and differing concepts of property, community, and history.
