Résumé:
A building's façade sets the aesthetic tone for its entire design while serving a variety of functions, from regulating light and protecting against the elements to providing insulation for temperature and sound. This book details hundreds of examples of interesting and progressive façades from around the world. Presented in double-page spreads, each façade is photographed from different angles and includes texts that describe their significance. Readers can learn how traditional mashrabiyas in Abu Dhabi are being engineered to respond to light and to regulate heat, how a hospital in Mexico City has been constructed with "smog-eating" tiles, and how a "bio-adaptive" façade in Germany uses algae to generate energy and provide shade. Informative and accessible, this compendium is a highly useful resource for architects, engineers, and designers.

Résumé:
The immersive soundscape installations and intimate environments of the Canadian artist duo Janet Cardiff (born 1957) and Georges Bures Miller (born 1960) present an ongoing series of chapters in the life of the ghost in the machine. Their works describe tales of tag-sale menace and shared loneliness through aural means, wholly reconceiving the gallery experience. A pioneering collector of new media art, Ingvild Goetz has assembled a significant series of works by Cardiff and Miller over the years, and this publication presents this important collection for the first time. Texts by Goetz, Okwui Enwezor, León Krempel and Rainald Schumacher provide background details and references to each work that shed light on its place in the artists’ oeuvre, with a particular focus on the couple’s very personal and theatrical use of sound.

Résumé:
The storybook history of the American West is a male-dominated narrative of drifters, dreamers, hucksters, and heroes--a tale that relegates women, assuming they appear at all, to the distant background. Home Lands: How Women Made the West upends this view to remember the West as a place of homes and habitations brought into being by the women who lived there. Virginia Scharff and Carolyn Brucken consider history's long span as they explore the ways in which women encountered and transformed three different archetypal Western landscapes: the Rio Arriba of northern New Mexico, the Front Range of Colorado, and the Puget Sound waterscape. This book vividly reimagines the West as a setting in which home has been created out of differing notions of dwelling and family and differing concepts of property, community, and history.

Gutai: Splendid Playground surveys the influential Japanese collective and artistic movement. This exhibition catalogue aims to demonstrate the range of bold and innovative creativity present in the avant-garde movement, to examine the aesthetic strategies in the cultural, social and political context of postwar Japan and the West, and to further establish Gutai in an expanded, transnational history and critical discourse of modern art. Organized thematically and chronologically to explore Gutai’s unique approach to materials, concepts, process, performativity and enviroment, this publication investigates the group’s radical experimentation across a range of media and styles, and demonstrates how individual artists pushed the limits of what art could be or mean in a post-atomic era. The range includes painting, conceptual art, performance, film, installation art, sound art, interactive art, light art and kinetic art.

Résumé:
In "Landscape into eco art", Mark Cheetham systematically examines connections and divergences between contemporary eco art, land art of the 1960s and 1970s, and the historical genre of landscape painting. Through eight thematic case studies that illuminate what eco art means in practice, reception, and history, Cheetham places the form in a longer and broader art-historical context. He considers a wide range of media—from painting, sculpture, and photography to artists’ films, video, sound work, animation, and installation—and analyzes the work of internationally prominent artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Nancy Holt, Mark Dion, and Robert Smithson. In doing so, Cheetham reveals eco art to be a dynamic extension of a long tradition of landscape depiction in the West that boldly enters into today’s debates on climate science, government policy, and our collective and individual responsibility to the planet

No.6. John Bevis’s definitive study of the pioneering natural history photographers "The Keartons : inventing nature photography", illustrated throughout with their original images. The first essay in this issue, by Angus Carlyle, reflects on the sequence of one hundred short runs that comprise "A downland index", which will be out in early summer. Other projects in progress include a new book in collaboration with geographers Hannah Neate and Ruth Craggs which will highlight the diversity of current responses to modernist architecture; a survey of the work of Michael Gibbs whose activities included poetry, performance, film, and publishing, and his immersion in what he called “a genuinely ‘underground’ culture… which owed nothing to the official art establishment”; and a book with the sound poet and performance artist Nathan Walker from his residency in June at the Armitt Museum in Cumbria.

Résumé:
If architecture is the construction of space between people, what happens when that space exists in a virtual world? That question is the starting point for this collection of revolutionary projects by a new generation of designers. The book begins by examining the important issues that have emerged as technology reshapes our idea of place and proceeds to present the four winning projects from the first architecture competition held within the explosively popular Internet community known as Second Life. Chosen for their inventiveness and aesthetic excellence, these structures a cloud that can be inhabited; a meta-museum; an interactive sound scape; and a snow palace of discarded objects illustrate the mind-bending possibilities of digital design. In the book s final section, media artists share their real-time experiences conceptualizing and creating projects for the virtual world.

Résumé:
This book is the outgrowth of the Fourth National Forum on Historic Preservation Practice, held at Goucher College in Towson, Maaryland, in March 2004. The papers presented at the conference were chosen from a large number of abstracts sent in response to a widely distributed call. Preservation has traditionally focused on saving prominent buildings of historical or architectural significance. Preserving cultural landscapes-the combined fabric of the natural and man-made environments-is a relatively new and often misunderstood idea among preservationists, but it is of increasing importance. The essays collected in this volume-case studies that include the Little Tokyo neighborhood in Los Angeles, the Cross Bronx Expressway, and a rural island in Puget Sound-underscore how this approach can be fruitfully applied. Together, they make clear that a cultural landscape perspective can be an essential underpinning for all historic preservation projects.

Résumé:
Architect Harry Seidler has spent more than 50 years traveling the globe, extensively photographing the peak achievements in architecture from 3000 B.C. to the present day. Thanks to sound advice given to him early on by his photographer brother, Marcell (“Only use Leica cameras and Kodachrome film, which is archival”), Seidler’s hobby quickly developed into a passion and, finally, an impressive archive of world architecture. Including, of course, many of the world’s most famous architectural structures, Seidler’s photographs illustrate the history and style—country by country—of architecture in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Divided into chapters by country, each with a brief introduction outlining its architectural history, Grand Tour offers armchair travelers, students, architecture buffs, and historians the opportunity to browse the buildings of the world through one man’s photographs—the fruits of a passionate, half-century endeavor.

Résumé:
Straw bale houses are easy to build, inexpensive, energy efficient, environmentally friendly, attractive, and, most of all, can be designed to match the builder's personal space needs, aesthetics, and budget. It's no wonder that straw bale houses are growing in popularity. In "Straw Bale Building," professional bale builders Peter Mack and Chris Magwood lead the potential builder through the entire process of building a bale structure, tackling all the practical issues from how to find and choose bales; developing sound building plans; costs; roofing; electrical, plumbing, and heating systems; building code compliance and working with building inspectors; and special concerns for builders in northern climates. Peter Mack and Chris Magwood are professional bale house builders. Together they have constructed 15 straw bale houses and structures. They teach a popular, on-going straw bale building workshop in Ontario, Canada.
