In this book, Martin Marker and his students from The Royal Danish Academy - Architecture, Design, Conservation at the Institute of Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape - BA Programme investigate Copenhagen as a Wunderkammer of architectural typologies. Leaving the focus on materiality and visual aesthetics aside, the book explores how programmatic complexities and existing structures can form foundations for future urbanism in a rapidly changing world with a growing population, climate changes, and limited resources. This book extends a welcoming invitation to explore and examine our urban structures, sparking a vital conversation that encourage a fresh perspective on our existing typologies, ensuring their continued relevance for the people who inhabit them.

Résumé:
In addition to his literary and fictional works, Fernando Pessoa wrote a multiplicity of theoretical texts concerning literature and aesthetics. In Writings on Art and Poetical Theory we see Pessoa exploring, under the guise of various heteronyms, general theories on poetics, the poetry produced by his other heteronyms, and the uses and abuses of criticism. Also included are essays on translation, the sensationist movement, and the history of English literature. This edition, prepared by Nuno Ribeiro and Cláudia Souza, provides a fascinating overview of Pessoa’s writings on art and poetic theory—most of which are presented here for the first time to English readers—thereby opening the way for future studies on one of the most significant authors of Portuguese modernism.

Résumé:
To reduce the building sector’s impact on the climate and the environment, the Brussels-based designers’ collective Rotor has worked these past twenty years on developing ideas about salvaging building materials and retaining preservation of existing buildings. Rotor’s impact is undeniably wide-ranging. Besides generating ecological awareness in the construction sector, they have also pushed boundaries on an operational and logistical level and are helping to build skills by sharing their know-how. Thanks to them, we have also seen a change in mentality in terms of aesthetics. This special issue of A+, with Rotor as guest editors, is a collection of essays that looks critically at material flows and at the challenges of a circular economy for architects today.

Résumé:
This publication explores architecture’s entanglement with contemporary image culture. It looks closely at how changes produced through technologies of mediation alter disciplinary concepts and produce political effects. Through both historical and contemporary examples, it focuses on how conventions of representation are established, maintained, challenged, and transformed. Critical investigations are conjoined with inquiries into aesthetics and technology in the hope that the tensions between them can aid an exploration into how architectural images are produced, disseminated, and valued; how images alter assumptions regarding the appearances of architecture and the environment. For students and academics in architecture, design and media studies, architectural and art history, and related fields, this book shows how design is impacted and changed by shifts in image culture, representational conventions and technologies.

Résumé:
The Toyko firm Tezuka Architects, headed by Takaharu and Yui Tezuka, is enjoying an increasingly international reputation for its refined blend of traditional and contemporary Japanese aesthetics, developing solutions which seem refreshingly unconventional while remaining anchored in the scale and needs of everyday life. Tezuka buildings often sport such features as large sliding-door fronts and verandas, and make particular use of wood and lightweight steel in order to effect a smooth back-and-forth flow between building and environment. In this respect their buildings call to mind centuries-old Japanese architectural tradition, which is absorbed into present day developments in design and construction technologies. Large public buildings such as the Fuji kindergarten and the Natural History Museum in Matsunoyama demonstrate the popularity of this synthesis.

Résumé:
Hiroshi Sugimoto turns his lens on Italy's architectural masterworks to create a meditation on the potential of cultural exchange and the possibility of cultural fusion. In 1585, four Japanese youths appeared before Pope Gregory XIII, summoned to his court from the nascent Christian community in Japan to present themselves at the capital of their faith. Sugimoto follows in the boys' footsteps, capturing the architectural wonders of Rome, Florence, and Venice. Sugimoto's images present each chapel and theater as a marvel, imposing and dark. He contextualizes his photographs with Japanese works from the period and the decades that follow. These panels and objects attest to the impact of Western culture, specifically Jesuit Christianity, on Momoyama and Edo aesthetics as Japanese artists envisioned scenes of European life.

Log 41 both observes the state of architecture today and devotes 114 pages to a special section called Working Queer, guest-edited by architect Jaffer Kolb. From Hans Tursack’s commentary on “shape architecture” to Michael Young’s valuation of parafiction as a critique of realism; from Lisa Hsieh’s examination of modernology in Japan to Cynthia Davidson’s conversation with Martino Stierli, Log 41 considers both history and the contemporary. In Working Queer, nineteen authors take a similar look at history and the contemporary in articles ranging from homo-fascism in early 20th-century aesthetics to trans gender bathroom typologies for today, as well as methods of work, materials, and mediation that can all be considered queer, or queering, in our pluralist, mediated world.

“One comes home tired after having worked all day and finds an uncomfortable chair.” This is the start to Bruno Munari’s considerations on the choice between aesthetics and functionality when designing furniture. To support his thesis, Munari analyses the most obvious case of the armchair. You must have been seated on countless types of chair: very low ones, ones with a deep seat, ones with sharp edges, and so on. “But be honest : what is more restful than a tuppenny deckchair.” In Munari’s typically engaging style the great designer reminds us how we could go on inventing furniture each time fashions change when actually all that is needed is to perfect the most comfortable of the existing models, not forgetting the real purpose: comfort and durability.
