Résumé:
In this book, award-winning writer Leanne Betasamosake Simpson uses Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg stories, storytelling aesthetics, and practices to explore the generative nature of Indigenous blockades through our relative, the beaver—or in Nishnaabemowin, Amik. Moving through genres, shifting through time, amikwag stories become a lens for the life-giving possibilities of dams and the world-building possibilities of blockades, deepening our understanding of Indigenous resistance as both a negation and an affirmation. Widely recognized as one of the most compelling Indigenous voices of her generation, Simpson’s work breaks open the intersections between politics, story, and song, bringing audiences into a rich and layered world of sound, light, and sovereign creativity. This publication reveals how the practice of telling stories is also a culture of listening, “a thinking through together,” and ultimately, like the dam or the blockade, an affirmation of life.

Résumé:
During the Cold War era, the songs that Soviet citizens could listen to were ruthlessly controlled by the state. But a secret underground subculture of music lovers and bootleggers defied the censors, building recording machines and making their own records of forbidden jazz, rock 'n' roll, and Russian music, cut onto used hospital x-ray film. Foregrounding interviews and oral testimonies gathered over five years, this volume presents the stories of the original bone bootleggers, their customers, musicians, record collectors, and commentators, evoking a spirited resistance to a repressive culture of prohibition and punishment. Richly illustrated with dozens of new images of Soviet x-ray discs and sound letters, the book details how the bootleggers worked, outlining the technical precedents of their techniques, situating their discs in a revised history of recorded media, and bringing a wealth of compelling new detail.

Résumé:
As a consequence of demographic change, it is increasingly necessary now and in the future for the architectural profession to rethink the design of residential solutions for aging people and especially those with dementia. With advancing age we are increasingly dependent on a spatial environment that not only has a positive effect on us, but also supports our everyday activities and takes age-related restrictions into account. A focal point of the new requirements is multisensory architecture: color and lighting design, sound design, tactile materials and surfaces, and haptically attractive forms, creating a spatial atmosphere in which the resident feels comfortable, providing security and orientation and fostering motor skills and cognitive abilities. "Building for Dementia" has been developed as a guideline for contemporary and dignified architecture that meets the requirements of people with dementia and views them as an integral part of society.

Résumé:
Volatile or Collapsed Space presents architectural installations by architect Sabine von Fischer. Working since 2004 under the name "Diaphanarch", Sabine von Fischer transfers terms like "diaphanous" and "prismatic" into space and tests them within. She understands diaphanous architecture as an experiment that undermines technical, aesthetic and economic conditions of space. Her works, in the form of drawings and texts – range from concept and criticism to construction. Further, they deal with visual versus audible space and the polarity between mass and horizon. Documented in drawings and photographs, works included in the book are the metal mesh and foam-core installation "Sonic Barriers" (awarded with the Swiss Art Prize 2004) on the exploration of interferences in sound and image as well as a work made from colored caoutschouk, corrugated cardboard and tubes, that integrates theoretical constructs on the event horizon into ist wavy material shape.

Résumé:
Sir William Chambers (1723–96) was a Swedish British architect who designed imaginative castle buildings and luxurious interiors as well as simple and rational utilitarian architecture: some of his most famous works include the Roehampton Villa, Great Pagoda and Somerset House (all located in London). Originally published in 1756, "A treatise on civil architecture" is an architecture handbook in which Chambers explains the basics of the art of building, aiming "to collect into one volume what is now dispersed in a great many, and to select, from mountains of promiscuous Materials, a Series of Sound Precepts and good Designs." The guidebook is supplemented by texts andl illustrations of classical building types and their functions. Received with considerable acclaim upon its release, "A treatise on civil architecture" quickly became the most popular practical work on architecture in the English language and has since been republished several times.

Résumé:
Nearly 50 years after its inception, Italian photographer Fulvio Ventura’s "Sagacity" is finally seeing the light of day. Begun in 1975 and originally scheduled for publication in 1978 by Luigi Ghirri’s short-lived Punto e Virgola imprint, Ventura continued to amass his photographic archive organically for the next four decades as an open-ended project called "Sagacity, Sunstar and Salamandra" (a title copied from a portentous inscription discovered by chance on a brass plate in the window of a typesetter). This was Ventura’s living body of work, inspired by an evolving passion for esoteric philosophies, the mysteries of happenstance, the sound of jazz, and the literature of surrealism and mythology. The images in this volume, gathered over many years in various locations around Europe, are spontaneous yet full of intention, cryptic but playful, and often strikingly cinematic – an altogether cohesive and self-contained psychic world, bound by visible and invisible energies.

Le quatrième numéro de la publication annuelle consacrée à l'expérimentation sonore et musicale, autour de la question de la voix. // The fourth issue of the annual publication dedicated to sound and music experimentation, co-published by Shelter Press and Ina GRM – Groupe de Recherches Musicales, around the topic of voice.

Vancouver is heralded around the world as a model for sustainable development. In "Planning on the edge," nationally and internationally renowned planning scholars, activists, and Indigenous leaders assess whether that reputation is warranted. While recognizing the many successes of the "Vancouverism" model, the contributors acknowledge that the forces of globalization and speculative property development have increased social inequality and housing insecurity since the 1980s in the city and the region. To determine the city’s prospects for overcoming these problems, they look at city planning from all angles, including planning for the Indigenous population, environmental and disaster planning, housing and migration, and transportation and water management. By looking at policies at the local, provincial, and federal levels and taking reconciliation with Indigenous peoples into account, "Planning on the edge" highlights the kinds of policies and practices needed to reorient Vancouver’s development trajectory along a more environmentally sound and equitable path.
