Résumé:
Is it possible to design a building without a context? How can an architect react to something that does not yet exist? For an office building in Digital Media City, a new section of Seoul that is still on the drawing board, Berlin-based architects Frank Barkow and Regine Leibinger developed an unusual strategy. The methodic treatment of themes such as "place" or "history" did not come into play at all, and the designs for the neighboring parcels of land were unknown. The architects gave their building the ability to kaleidoscopically reflect its future surroundings in a folded façade. This book documents the process of designing and constructing the building, which was completed in early 2007. Texts, photographs, and video stills provide commentary on the emergence of a versatile face in the midst of facelessness. With DVD-video "Reflect observed" by Corinne Rose.

Résumé:
Dutch theorist and video artist Mieke Bal is well known for her specific ways of "deep reading" works by artists such as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Louise Bourgeois and Nalini Malani. She intertwines her research with various disciplines, including contemporary and 19th-century literature, psychoanalysis, gender studies, philosophy and biblical studies, and she has always approached her video art as a specific form of cultural analysis. When ruminating on how she could best reflect on a full life with different roles and experiences, she did not want to write a navel-gazing autobiography. Instead, she decided on an ABC of memories and the concepts these have generated: key terms that have a specific value to her, that interlink as a mesh of meaning, weaving together daily experiences and teaching, her know-how in artmaking and the core concepts of her analytical work.

Résumé:
Lifelike invites a close examination of art since the late 1960s based on commonplace objects and situations that are startlingly realistic, often playful and sometimes surreal--works that investigate the quieter side of the quotidian. While artists such as Vija Celmins, Rudolf Stingel and Paul Sietsema employ illusionistic painting and drawing, others’ use of materials is surprising--Thomas Demand’s video of what appears to be a rainstorm is made from animated candy wrappers; Susan Collis’ sculpture of construction debris is fashioned from exotic hardwoods, mother of pearl and silver. What binds these artists together is their rejection of the easy route technology might offer in favor of labor-intensive fabrication. Featuring painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, video and installations by more than 40 artists, this publication is the first publication to address the recent history of artists using these strategies across media.

Résumé:
In this beautifully designed and sensuously illustrated hybrid artist book / exhibition document, New York based French artist Camille Henrot reconsiders source material and ideas from her Artist Research Fellowship at the Smithsonian, her 2013 video Grosse Fatigue and her installation The Pale Fox (2014 15), which was shown at several museums throughout Europe. The accompanying text by Henrot, in collaboration with Clara Meister and Michael Connor, forms the core of the book, and is in keeping with Henrot s characteristic approach to knowledge production and organization. An interview between the artist and social anthropologist Monique Jeudy-Ballini offers further insight into Henrot s mode of thinking and her fascination with anthropology. A natural continuation of her artistic practice, Elephant Child combines Henrot s research materials, photographic fragments, preparatory notes and sketches alongside color photographs of the artist s sculptures, video stills and installation images.

Résumé:
Dana Claxton (born 1959) is a critically acclaimed, award-winning artist and filmmaker working across film, video, photography, single and multichannel video installation and performance art. Her practice investigates the body, the socio-political and the spiritual within realms of indigenous beauty. This book consolidates our understanding of Dana Claxton’s dominant and recurring themes—indigenous history, culture, beauty and spirituality. While Claxton’s art often alludes to the destructive legacy of colonialism, it also celebrates the resurgence of First Nations’ presence and contemporary identity. What emerges is an artist delivering works of ever greater power and conviction. With her expansive and genre-defying practice—photography, videos, mixed-media installations, text works, performances and curatorial work—she continues to critically reimagine the space of the gallery to be accessible for wider Indigenous audiences and to uphold new understandings of beauty.
