The pond at Upton Pyne formed at the site of an eighteenth-century manganese mine. Located on land owned by a local family who were involved in the mining venture, the first excavations began in 1788. It was originally an open-cast mine employing just a few men who worked with ladders, picks, shovels. The quality of the ore in the lode was rich, and once refined it was shipped from Exeter Quay to London and Bristol where it was used predominantly in the production of glass. After a bright start the output of the mine steadily diminished and by 1823 it had ceased production, leaving a large pit, shallow on the east side near the road and becoming deeper towards the west, where it is overhung by a cliff...

Résumé:
The Cedric Price fonds at the CCA is an inexhaustible source of provocations about what architecture is and the questions it should ask. Sofia Nannini looks here at a small but representative collection of files within this vast archive: a proposal for a light and reconfigurable livestock pen to clean and weigh cattle and sheep, which Price suggests can also become a bucolic family picnic area when not used for the animals, simply by removing the gates that control them. And it is precisely this question of control of the non-human that Nannini chooses to focus on. In the context of Price's interest in impermanence and the creative potential of human interaction and individual free will, Nannini exposes architecture's responsibility in perpetuating the assumed dominion of our species over others.

Résumé:
Engaging with the question of speculation in ways that encompass the artistic, the economic, and the philosophical, with excursions into the literary and the scientific, this collection approaches the theme as a powerful logic of contemporary life whose key instantiations are art and finance. Both are premised on the power of contingency, temporality, and experimentation in the creation (and capitalization) of possible worlds. Artistic autonomy, and the self-legislation of the space of art, have often been seen as the freedom to speculate wildly on material and social possibilities. This anthology surveys material and social inventiveness from the ground up, speculating with technologies, gender, constructs of the family, and systems of logistics and coordination. An ecology of speculation is traced—one that is as broken, specific, and enthralling as the world.

Résumé:
In the Tyrol region of Austria, amid the traditional wood-frame country residences, an innovative style of architecture has recently become preeminent. Current construction no longer has the massive, provincial look customary in this region, but instead projects a cosmopolitan flair that reflects contemporary international trends. This confident art of building employs a more modern architectural language, and uses steel, glass, and concrete as well as wood to achieve its aims. This title examines the work of a younger generation of architects practicing in the Tyrol. These buildings are of a remarkable variety and complexity, and range from more traditional family homes and apartment buildings to unusual designs for kindergardens, schools, footbridges, firehouses, and supermarkets. The author is the editor-in-chief of "Architektur aktuell", a bilingual magazine on international architecture focusing on Austria.

Résumé:
Recently opened to the public for the first time, the home of the Futurist artist Giacomo Balla is depicted and inventoried in this book. The apartment in Rome in which Balla lived with his family for over 30 years was covered with lively murals, painted furniture, decorated utensils and clothes, as well as preparatory drawings, stage designs, toys and other works by the artist, together with paintings by his two daughters Luce and Elica. The numerous paintings by Balla kept in the apartment range from his early figurative period to the Futurist aesthetics of the 1910s and ’20s and a return to representation in the latter part of his life. Together they create a kaleidoscopic example of total design, reflecting the indissoluble link between art and life that lay at the root of Futurist thinking.

Résumé:
A monograph on the architectural practice WOHA, known for its environmentally friendly buildings. This first monograph on Singapore-based WOHA uses examples such as open-aired tropical family homes, green permeable high-rises, and a cutting-edge resort on the island of Bali to show how the firm has continued to create innovative, environmentally sensitive structures that blend into their environments, yet maintain aesthetic integrity. Essays in the book explore WOHA's tropical architecture, discuss the Asian understanding of nature, and examine newly designed community spaces. Headed by Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, the practice is making a name internationally for their sophisticated projects, which are presented in this volume. Through numerous illustrations and in-depth essays, this book reveals the innovative, sustainable, and green designs of WOHA.

Résumé:
The storybook history of the American West is a male-dominated narrative of drifters, dreamers, hucksters, and heroes--a tale that relegates women, assuming they appear at all, to the distant background. Home Lands: How Women Made the West upends this view to remember the West as a place of homes and habitations brought into being by the women who lived there. Virginia Scharff and Carolyn Brucken consider history's long span as they explore the ways in which women encountered and transformed three different archetypal Western landscapes: the Rio Arriba of northern New Mexico, the Front Range of Colorado, and the Puget Sound waterscape. This book vividly reimagines the West as a setting in which home has been created out of differing notions of dwelling and family and differing concepts of property, community, and history.

Résumé:
Villa Savoye is an icon of modern architecture. But who were Eugénie and Pierre Savoye, who had the house built between 1928 and 1930? Why did they commission Le Corbusier? And how did they live in the country house they dubbed "Villa les Heures Claires"? Their grandson Jean-Marc Savoye tells the story of the villa and its residents using rare documents and family memories. In his pictures, illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme, long fascinated by the building, brings to life the construction site, everyday life, the war period, its use as a barn, and its rescue from demolition. In 1965, Le Corbusier lived to see Villa Savoye declared a monument; in 2016 it earned a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list and now welcomes 40,000 visitors each year.

Résumé:
Built and designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 1928-1930, the Tugendhat House in Brno / Czech Republic is one of the most significant buildings of European modernism. In 2001, UNESCO added the house to the List of World Cultural Heritage Sites. In this third, updated edition, the authors give personal and historic insights relating to the house; also documenting aspects pertaining to art history and conservation-science studies. The comprehensive description and in-depth discussion of the materials used is a special feature in this field of research. The appeal of this monograph lies in the publication of photographs from the family archive which, for the first time, show the house in its lived-in condition. The experimental artistic color photographs by Fritz Tugendhat are among the pioneering achievements of amateur photography.
