Résumé:
Text by Philipp Kaiser, Polly Staple, Karl Holmqvist, Interview by Helena Selder. The video works of the Swedish artist and 2007 Documenta participant Johanna Billing, born in 1973, occupy an unusual terrain between documentary and staged scientific experiment. Billing depicts the rituals of society by filming, for example, a group of young people as they reconstruct a long-forgotten experiment, or a group of artists singing a melancholy ballad together in a gesture of solidarity. By focusing on the dialectical interplay between the individual and the community, Billing reveals processes of social erosion--but without asserting emphatic judgment of these processes. The artists video works--among them the well-known works You Don't Love Me Yet (2003) and Magical World (2005)--have been shown in many international group exhibitions, but this publication is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of her profoundly atmospheric productions.

Résumé:
When his 24-hour film The Clock was awarded the Golden Lion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, Christian Marclay’s hour had struck. Yet as an artist, performer and pioneer of turntablism, the Swiss-American Christian Marclay (born 1955) had already been famous for his complex oeuvre for more than 30 years, translating sounds and music into visual forms in his performances, installations, collages, sculptures and photographs, creating new sensory experiences that his viewers had never before experienced. Comic books and mangas are the source material for Marclay’s most recent works: the immersive video animation "Surround Sounds" (2014–15) and the series of Onomatopoeia paintings and works on paper inspired by the wet, liquid sounds of painting. Christian Marclay: Action, an extensive monographic survey, covers the entire spectrum of the artist’s multimedia and synaesthetic oeuvre, from previously little-known early works to his most recent paintings and video.

Résumé:
In this book Michael Fried considers the work of four contemporary artists--video artist and photographer Anri Sala, sculptor Charles Ray, painter Joseph Marioni, and video artist and intervener in movies Douglas Gordon. He shows how their respective projects are best understood as engaging in a variety of ways with some of the core themes and issues associated with high modernism, and indeed with its prehistory in French painting and art criticism from Diderot on. 'Four Honest Outlaws' thus continues the author's exploration of the critical and philosophical territory opened up by his earlier book, 'Why Photography Matters as Art as Never Before.' It presents a vision of the most important contemporary art as not only not repudiating modernism in the name of postmodernism in any of the latter's many forms and manifestations, but also actually as committed to dialectically renewing certain crucial qualities and values that modernism and premodernism brought to the fore, above all those of presentness and anti-theatricality.

Résumé:
“As a filmmaker my tool is memory, not film,” says David Claerbout in The Time That Remains, “and memory likes a good composition.” Although originally trained as a painter and a draughtsman, Claerbout (born 1969) has taken Belgium and the world by storm with his epic video installations. These installations are devised in his own studio, where he collects and arranges thousands of stills and scans into slow and deliberate moving films. Time, in Claerbout’s videos, seems to move with a mesmerizing heaviness, almost as if within a memory or piece of music. With some of his films lasting up to 13 hours, Claerbout expects and requires the undivided attention of his audience or, at least, their patience. In this first catalogue of his oeuvre, his film and video projects are presented through his production photographs and design sketches, offering an exciting introduction into the process and aesthetic development of the artist.
