Massimiliano Fuksas is a major international architect with offices in Rome, Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt and China. For many years he has dedicated special attention to the study of urban problems and, in particular, to the suburbs. Four key considerations drive his work: community, culture, spirituality and peace. Some of his major works include the Maison des Arts in Bordeaux, the research centre for Ferrari in Maranello, the Milan Trade Fair, the Zenith Music Hall in Strasbourg and the Peres Centre for Peace in Israel. He is also a professor at several universities and has published widely. In 2000, he directed the VII Venice Biennale of Architecture titled Less Aesthetics, More Ethics. This book compiles high-quality photographs of his major works and never-released sketches and drawings conceived by this multi-faceted mind.

Résumé:
This book is a collection of essays by Susan Sontag which was published in 1966. It includes some of Sontag's best-known works, including "On Style", "Notes on 'Camp'", and the titular essay "Against Interpretation". In the last, Sontag argued that in the new critical approach to aesthetics the spiritual importance of art is being replaced by the emphasis on the intellect. Rather than recognizing great creative works as possible sources of energy, she argued, contemporary critics were all too often taking art's transcendental power for granted, and focusing instead on their own intellectually constructed abstractions like "form" and "content. " In effect, she wrote, interpretation had become "the intellect's revenge upon art. " The essay famously finished with the words, "in place of a hermeneutics we need an erotics of art".

Résumé:
This book examines a broad range of Abbott’s work—including portraits from the 1920s, little known and uncompleted projects from the 1930s, and experimental science photography from the 1950s. It argues that Abbott consistently relied on realism as the theoretical armature for her work, even as her understanding of that term changed over time and in relation to specific historical circumstances. But as Weissman demonstrates, Abbott’s unflinching commitment to “realist” aesthetics led her to develop a critical theory of documentary that recognizes the complexity of representation without excluding or obscuring a connection between art and engagement in the political public sphere. In telling Abbott’s story, The Realisms of Berenice Abbott reveals insights into the politics and social context of documentary production and presents a thoughtful analysis of why documentary remains a compelling artistic strategy today.

Résumé:
The complex legacy of this most notable period is discussed from a different perspective by each contributor. Peter S. Reed details the rise of modern architecture during the war—housing designs that used the latest ideas in prefabricated construction methods, lightweight materials, innovative technologies, and a corporate and institutional aesthetic that helped popularize modernism as the appropriate image of American industrial might and corporate success. Robert Friedel documents the development of new materials, especially plastics, and discusses techniques for employing traditional materials in novel ways. Margaret Crawford explores the struggle of women and blacks for public housing. Finally, Michael Sorkin, architect and writer, explores the migration of certain values and aesthetics from the necessities of war to the choices of peace. Among these are images of speed, camouflage, ruin, totalization, and flight.

Résumé:
The creation of Soviet culture in the 1920s and the 1930s was the most radical of modernist projects, both in aesthetic and in political terms. "Modernism and the Making of the Soviet New Man" explores the architecture of this period as the nexus between aesthetics and politics. The design of the material environment, according to the author, was the social effort that most clearly articulated the dynamic of the socialist project as a negotiation between utopia and reality, the will for progress and the will for tyranny. It was a comprehensive effort that brought together professional architects and statisticians, theatre directors, managers, housewives, pilots, construction workers. What they had in common was the enthusiasm for defining the "new man", the ideal citizen of the radiant future, and the settings in which he or she lives.

Résumé:
In the densely populated urban areas of Japan, small houses with unusual spatial concepts and surprising layout solutions are emerging on narrow strips of land that would normally be considered unsuitable for home construction. Yet it’s not only this sense of space, but also the sensory use of materials and a feel for aesthetics skilfully combined with traditional elements that have fascinated architects outside of Japan. The fact that most of the constructive solutions do not correspond to Central European standards is irrelevant: It’s the innovative approaches that serve as a source of inspiration. This volume presents the latest developments in residential projects from recent years. In addition to lavish photospreads and layout depictions, a selection of detailed solutions are presented that can be adapted to western standards.

There is no escaping landscape: it's everywhere and part of everyone's life. Landscapes have received much less attention in aesthetics than those arts we can choose to ignore, such as painting or music - but they can tell us a lot about the ethical and aesthetic values of the societies that produce them. Drawing examples from a wide range of landscapes from around the world and throughout history, the author considers the ways landscapes can affect our emotions, our imaginations, and our understanding of the passage of time. This publication reveals the enormous design work involved in even the most naturalistic of landscapes, such as Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and the ways in which contemporary landscapes are turning the challenges of the industrial past into opportunities for the future.

Résumé:
"Luxury and Modernism" shows how luxury was present in bold, literal forms in modern designs—from lavish materials and costly technologies to deluxe buildings and household objects—and in subtler ways as well, such as social milieus and modes of living. While modernism was publicized as a fusion of technology, new materials, and rational aesthetics to improve the lives of ordinary people, it was often out of reach to the very masses it purportedly served. Schuldenfrei exposes the disconnect between modernism's utopian discourse and its luxury objects and elite architectural commissions. Despite the movement's egalitarian rhetoric, many modern designs addressed the desires of the privileged individual. Yet as Schuldenfrei demonstrates, luxury was integral not only to how modern buildings and objects were designed, manufactured, and sold, but has contributed to modernism's appeal to this day.

Résumé:
Between 1937 and 1938, garden designer Christopher Tunnard published a series of articles in the British Architectural Review that rejected the prevailing English landscape style. Inspired by the principles of Modernist art and Japanese aesthetics, Tunnard called for a "new technique" in garden design that emphasized an integration of form and purpose. Tunnard's magazine pieces were republished in book form as Gardens in the Modern Landscape in 1938, and a revised second edition was issued a decade later. Taken together, these articles constituted a manifesto for the modern garden, its influence evident in the work of such figures as Lawrence Halprin, Philip Johnson, and Edward Larrabee Barnes. Long out of print, the book is here reissued in a facsimile of the 1948 edition, accompanied by a contextualizing foreword by John Dixon Hunt.
