Architecture shapes both human and more-than-human worlds. Historically, it has served (and still does) as an instrument of power—creating, restricting, and distributing both control and access. Yet architecture also carries the potential for care and inclusivity, offering shelter, and fostering belonging. Shifting the focus from the designers and creators of the built environment to its inhabitants, Building Diversity’s second publication offers a critical lens to explore for whom cities, buildings, spaces, and infrastructures are shaped for and with. The publication creates a space for diverse voices by bringing in different perspectives to highlight the complexities of the question: ... but, who are we building for? These multifaceted contributions spark curiosity and offer ideas and thoughts for further conversations and reflections. Building Diversity is a non-profit organisation based in Denmark, dedicated to foster diversity and inclusivity in the built environment. They believe that shaping architecture and design is a collective effort that thrives on diverse perspectives and inclusive collaborations. Building Diversity is powered by volunteers united by the vision of inclusive and equitable futures. With over 90 members from more than 40 nationalities, the community brings together a diverse group of perspectives.

Résumé:
''Common Treasures'' is a new series of books about the challenges faced by rural communities, written by people who are working on the ground and in the fields. Each volume gathers the very best essays about climate adaptation, food production and land use, and presents them as alternatives to the prevailing political discourse. This anthology, the second in the ''Common Treasures'' project, developed from a series of conversations between the architecture collective Assemble and the arts organisation Common Ground. It takes as its premise the idea that approaches to housing that are grounded in greater levels of community ownership, management and maintenance have the potential to empower communities, overcome the opposition to local development and create conditions in which skilled rural workers are part of stronger local networks of industry and agriculture. Housing built by, for and with the people who live in it makes characterful neighbourhoods that last well, are able to be maintained by their residents and facilitate investment in local labour, materials and skilled workmanship. The contributors to this anthology share their work to overcome the many obstacles to this way of working, and offer a vision which is grounded, imaginative and hopeful.

Résumé:
Are there significant variations in the ways planners in different nations have influenced urban, regional, and national development? Do such variations arise from differences in planning cultures, meaning the collective ethos and dominant attitude of planners in different nations towards the appropriate roles of the state, market forces, and civil society? How are such professional cultures formed? Are they indigenous and immutable, or do they evolve with social, political, and economic changes both within and outside the national territories? Specifically, what has been the impact of the intensification of global interconnectedness in trade, capital flows, labor migration, and technological connectivity on national planning cultures? "Comparative planning cultures" addresses these questions, drawing on the planning experience in ten nations and at different territorial levels. The result is an understanding of planning culture that is complex and dynamic-in contrast to traditional notions of culture that evoke a sense of immutability and inheritance of unchanging social attributes of planners. The volume concludes that there is no cultural nucleus or core planning culture, no social gene that can be decoded to reveal the cultural DNA of planning practice of any nation.

Résumé:
As the world adapts to the consequences of a global pandemic, museums continue to experience unprecedented disruption and change. At the same time, there is a growing debate and dissent over what museums are for, who they speak to, and what the histories, objects, and ideas they are tasked with holding reflect—all taking place within a public sphere that feels increasingly dynamic and volatile. Taking a wide-ranging and thought-provoking look at the roles and responsibilities of some of our most well-known and best-loved public institutions, ''Gathering of Strangers'' explores the critical challenges and opportunities for the museum at this point in the twenty-first century. Moving from the historical origins of the gallery to important current debates taking place around art and public engagement, the climate emergency, race equality and decolonization, and the value of the arts in education—this book sets out the role of art and artists in imagining and shaping our collective future. It is also a love letter to the museum, from a sector leader who is at the forefront of the cultural conversation today.

Résumé:
Drawing is a form of research, a means to investigate, explore and gain a better understanding of an idea, a condition or a phenomenon. Drawing is a practice of representation, one that inquires, explores materiality, and establishes its own time and dialogue. This book brings together 23 authors who represent 18 critical and reflexive practices of drawing in design. The assembled texts engage drawing aesthetics (spatial, temporal, and material) and drawing ethics (investigating and making sense together) as well as four overarching themes: inquiry, time, dialogue and materiality —in drawing. Taken as a collective conversation on drawing practice, this book offers a shared reflection on the agency of drawing, on its potential to explore issues raised by our built and cultural environment, and on the ability of drawing to support and contribute to design research. It farmes drawing as a research practice, one that is both deeply rooted in its disciplinary context and openly challenging its limits and conventions. "—in drawing" adds to a continuing conversation on design research methods and the ethics and aesthetics of representation. It seeks to further establish the significance of drawing as a legitimate mode of inquiry across design disciplines and beyond.
