Résumé:
In 1985, in his role as chief government architect in the Netherlands, Tjeerd Dijkstra wrote a note on the concept of architectural quality and the criteria that, in his opinion, could be applied when assessing building plans. Some thirty years have elapsed and there is still a need for clarity about the concept of architectural quality. Here, Tjeerd Dijkstra describes which concepts play an important part in the definition of architectural quality. After a reflection on these concepts, he enters into the procedures of monitoring and assessment. The proposed criteria and procedures are usable as a theoretical background for all those who are concerned with architectural quality, not only in governmental institutions, but for private clients and interested citizens as well.

Résumé:
After a century behind the wheel, could we be reaching the end of the automotive age? From the Model T to the SUV, "Autophobia" reveals that our vexed relationship with the automobile is nothing new - in fact, debates over whether cars are forces of good or evil in our world have raged for over a century now, ever since the automobile was invented. According to Brian Ladd, this love-hate relationship we have with our cars is the defining quality of the automotive age. And everyone has an opinion about them, from the industry shills, oil barons, and radical libertarians who offer cars blithe paeans and deny their ill effects, to the technophobes, treehuggers, and killjoys who curse cars, ignoring the very real freedoms and benefits they provide us.

How would it be if what we take for human advance were simply a technological progress that literally leaves us out of its equations? What if Progress is not humanity striking out bravely towards the future, but an ultimately destructive force? Paul Virilio paints a bleak picture of current scientific, cultural, social and political values. Art has succumbed to the techniques of advertising and in politics, the battle for hearts and minds has become a mere convergence of opinion. TV ratings have triumphed over universal suffrage. The events of September 11 reflect both the manipulation of a global sub-proletariat and the delusions of an élite of rich students and technicians who resemble the 'suicidal members of the Heaven's Gate cybersect'. And, in this post-humanist dystopia, we are morally rudderless before the threat of biological manipulations as yet undreamt.

Personal carbon quotas are likely to force a re-evaluation of our current lifestyles and single trips will carry greater levels of expectation. Casual long distance travel may be socially decried. Résumé:
When Philip Johnson died in 2005 at the age of 98, he was still one of the most recognizable--and influential--figures on the American cultural landscape. The first recipient of the Pritzker Prize and MoMA's founding architectural curator, Johnson made his mark as one of America's leading architects with his famous Glass House in New Caanan, CT, and his controversial AT Building in NYC, among many others in nearly every city in the country--but his most natural role was as a consummate power broker and shaper of public opinion. Johnson introduced European modernism--the sleek, glass-and-steel architecture that now dominates our cities--to America, and mentored generations of architects, designers, and artists to follow. He defined the era of "starchitecture" with its flamboyant buildings and celebrity designers who esteemed aesthetics and style above all other concerns.

Résumé:
This issue is dedicated to presenting and analyzing the work and surrounding cultural/political issues of the architectures of Latin America judged to be of most merit and interest by a faculty committee at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Their sense was that much of this work had not yet received sufficient attention and acclaim. They were adamant that the issue in no way imply that Latin American architecture and culture were one kind of thing: in fact, a goal of the magazine is to dispel stereotypes and conventional opinion, to seek for diversity. This is the first time that Harvard Design Magazine has published projects for their own sake, outside the context of a writer’s broad argument. We hope you enjoy this more visual material taking its place among our more familiar critical essays.

Résumé:
Every designer has a favorite typeface. More than a vehicle to transport words onto a page, a typeface can express taste, style, opinion, and attitude. The typeface a designer uses — and how he has manipulated it — reveals the personality and aesthetic of the designer himself. Using a selection of high-quality graphic design work for books, promotional materials, signage and more, each book in the I Love Type series highlights a single typeface and its prevalence in the design community. This narrow focus lends itself to an in-depth study of each typeface — how the same font can be altered to create different moods and generate an entirely original effect. One of the most used sans serif typefaces, Futura is synonymous with efficiency and modernity, with its clean, even strokes, geometric shapes and lack of decorative flourishes.

Résumé:
A really well-designed public toilet is a rare and welcome discovery. It adds greatly to the impression made on a building's users -- whether in a restaurant, mall, airport or hotel. And, in the case of public toilets in parks and streets, a clean and aesthetically pleasant public toilet leaves the user with a positive opinion of the city as a whole. For much of the 20th century, "cheap and durable" was the rule. That trend is changing. "Public toilet design" presents the best projects made in the last two years, worldwide. There are more than 50 public spaces shown, with the "facilities" well integrated into good design. There are more than 600 full-color photographs. Each project is accompanied by plans and detailed descriptions that show the transformation of the public toilet as its planning, development and construction took shape over the last few years.

Résumé:
This is the unconventional catalogue of the exhibition “Robert Frank, Books and Films, 1947–2016,” a special edition of the German newspaper the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" — following its original design and format, and printed on newsprint. Conceived by Robert Frank and Gerhard Steidl, the exhibition presents Frank’s iconic images in the context of his life, creative processes, and wider cultural history. Here Frank’s books and films are seen against the backdrop of his photographs, which are presented in an immediate and straightforward way: printed on up to three-meter-long sheets of newsprint and installed directly onto the wall, without frames. The newspaper catalogue recreates the raw, innovative approach of the exhibition. Featuring interviews, essays, letters and opinion pieces alongside rich picture sequences, Robert Frank, Books and Films, 1947–2016 is an unpretentious and accessible printed object—or in Frank’s own words: “Cheap, quick and dirty, that’s how I like it!”
