Résumé:
This survey of one of the world's leading architecture firms celebrates three decades of design excellence, environmental sustainability, and architectural innovation, and explores some fascinating proposals for the future of the practice. In the areas of transportation, commercial, recreational, residential, and educational design, Grimshaw excels at delivering workable spaces that will serve its clients' needs for years to come. Among the many British projects featured in this book are the International Railway Terminal for Eurostar trains at Waterloo, the Eden Project in Cornwall, the Financial Times building in London Docklands, and the Regional Headquarters for the RAC at Bristol. The practice has also completed projects in Germany, such as the Frankfurt Exhibition Hall and VITRA furniture offices; the Ijberg Bridge in Amsterdam; the Plant Science Center in St Louis; and the Southern Cross Railway Station in Melbourne, Australia, for which the practice recently won the Lubetkin Prize. Other projects in Spain, Mexico, and Zurich are included as well. Beautifully presented, these projects reveal the evolution of a firm that is quickly growing in influence, and clearly shows that the ideals of economy, sustainability and integrity continue to inform their work.

Résumé:
This book relates circular economy principles to housing design and construction and highlights how those principles can result in both monetary savings, positive environmental impact, and socio-ecological change. Chapters focus on three key circular economy principles and apply them to architectural construction and design, namely rethinking of the end-of-use phase of a building and the potential of design-for-disassembly; the role of digitization and data standardization in fostering evidence-based circular economy design decision-making; and presenting space as a resource to conserve, via exploration of the sharing economy and flexibility principles. Beyond waste management and material cycles, this book provides a holistic understanding of the opportunities across the building life cycle that can allow for sustainable and affordable circular housing. With case studies from 13 different countries, including but not limited to the Hammarby Sjöstad district in Sweden, the Circle House in Denmark, Benny Farm in Canada, VMD Prefabricated House in Mexico, and the Deep Performance Dwelling in China, authors pair theoretical frameworks with real-world examples. This will be a useful resource for upper-level students and academics of architecture, construction, and planning, especially those studying and researching housing design, building technology, green project management, and environmental design.

Résumé:
The teachings of Mies van der Rohe and his respect for the effects of space and material has had a great influence on the American architect and artist Gene Summers. Thanks to the technology of the day and Summers’ own creative talents, he was able to help transform Mies’ visions into built structures. For 16 years Gene Summers was a close colleague of Mies, heading his office and working with him on many projects including the Seagram Building in New York, Bacardi’s office buildings in Cuba and Mexico, and Krupps’ offices in Essen. Also working independently, Summers created projects for C.F Murphy Associates, such as the McCormick Convention Centre and the Malcolm X College in Chicago. Later with Ridgway Limited, he was responsible for the the acclaimed restoration of the Biltmore Hotels in Los Angeles. Familiar with bronze as a building material, Summers used his knowledge to design elegant furniture and household objects before devoting himself entirely to producing artworks using this medium. This volume is the first presentation of Gene Summers’ architectural and artistic work, surveying the many areas in which he was active. Phyllis Lambert, founder of the Canadian Centre for Architecture president of the International Confederation of Architectural Museums, provides an enlightening introduction to his work.

Résumé:
From the avant-garde design of the Islamic Cultural Center in New York City to the simplicity of the Dar al-Islam Mosque in Abiquiu, New Mexico, the American mosque takes many forms of visual and architectural expression. The absence of a single, authoritative model and the plurality of design nuances reflect the heterogeneity of the American Muslim community itself, which embodies a whole spectrum of ethnic origins, traditions, and religious practices. In this book, Akel Ismail Kahera explores the history and theory of Muslim religious aesthetics in the United States since 1950. Using a notion of deconstruction based on the concepts of "jamal" (beauty), "subject," and "object" found in the writings of Ibn Arabi (d. 1240), he interprets the forms and meanings of several American mosques from across the country. His analysis contributes to three debates within the formulation of a Muslim aesthetics in North America—first, over the meaning, purpose, and function of visual religious expression; second, over the spatial and visual affinities between American and non-American mosques, including the Prophet's mosque at Madinah, Arabia; and third, over the relevance of culture, place, and identity to the making of contemporary religious expression in North America. Akel Ismail Kahera is Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

Résumé:
The work of Gabriel Orozco is an exemplary adventure of ideas and objects. Always generously implicating the spectator, Orozco draws on a large material repertoire to produce quiet shifts in commonplace scenarios. This book, published to coincide with Orozco's exhibition at the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, is the first substantial monograph on the artist, and testifies to the range of his investigations, from tiny adjustments in everyday locations (such as breath on a piano or reflections in a puddle) to more recent preoccupations with spherical forms in collage and paint. In an extensive interview with Briony Fer, the artist explains some of the conceptual premises of his art. Benjamin H.D. Buchloh situates Orozco s various sculptural practices within twentieth-century precedents and the climate of postwar consumerism and assesses them as manifestations of a shift in object-subject relations. And Yves-Alain Bois explores Orozco's recent "return" to painting, considering the structural logic of his canvases, in which Orozco deploys self-imposed rules to plot compositions (or "diagrams," as he describes them). With insightful texts and hundreds of illustrations, this big, bold, 360-page book is the definitive work to date on one of the most influential contemporary artists.

Résumé:
This imaginative study of American visual culture reveals how the political predicaments of a few small bureaucracies once fostered pictures of an extraordinary style. U.S. geographical and geological surveys of the late nineteenth century produced photographs and drawings of topography, American Indians, geologic features, botanical specimens, and specialists at work in the field. Some of these pictures have long been celebrated for their anticipation of a modernist aesthetic, but Robin Kelsey, in this abundantly illustrated volume, traces their modernistic qualities to archival ingenuity. The technical and promotional needs of surveys, Kelsey argues, fostered the emergence of a taut, graphic pictorial style that imitated the informational clarity of diagrams and maps. As this book demonstrates, these pictures became sites of struggle as well as innovation when three brilliant survey artists and photographers subtly resisted the programs they were hired to serve. Discovering a politics of style behind the modernist look of survey pictures, Kelsey offers a fresh interpretation of canonical western expedition photographs by Timothy H. O'Sullivan and introduces two exceptional but largely forgotten sets of pictures: views of the U.S.-Mexico boundary from the 1850s by Arthur Schott and photographs of the Charleston earthquake of 1886 by C. C. Jones.

Résumé:
Some central questions in the natural and social sciences can’t be answered by controlled laboratory experiments, often considered to be the hallmark of the scientific method. This impossibility holds for any science concerned with the past. In addition, many manipulative experiments, while possible, would be considered immoral or illegal. One has to devise other methods of observing, describing, and explaining the world. In the historical disciplines, a fruitful approach has been to use natural experiments or the comparative method. This book consists of eight comparative studies drawn from history, archeology, economics, economic history, geography, and political science. The studies cover a spectrum of approaches, ranging from a non-quantitative narrative style in the early chapters to quantitative statistical analyses in the later chapters. The studies range from a simple two-way comparison of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which share the island of Hispaniola, to comparisons of 81 Pacific islands and 233 areas of India. The societies discussed are contemporary ones, literate societies of recent centuries, and non-literate past societies. Geographically, they include the United States, Mexico, Brazil, western Europe, tropical Africa, India, Siberia, Australia, New Zealand, and other Pacific islands. In an Afterword, the editors discuss how to cope with methodological problems common to these and other natural experiments of history.
