Résumé:
Taking a critical look at how new urbanism has lived up to its ideals, the author asks whether new urban approaches offer a viable path to creating good communities. With examples drawn principally from North America, Europe and Japan, "Planning the good community" explores new urban approaches in a wide range of settings. It compares the movement for urban renaissance in Europe with the New Urbanism of the United States and Canada, and asks whether the concerns that drive today’s planning theory – issues like power, democracy, spatial patterns and globalisation - receive adequate attention in new urban approaches. The issue of aesthetics is also raised, as the author questions whether communities must be more than just attractive in order to be good. With the benefit of twenty years’ hindsight and a world-wide perspective, this book offers the reader unparalleled insight as well as a rigorous and considered critical analysis.

Résumé:
Archivio opens its third editorial cycle: four thematic issues, each curated by a Guest Editor with deep expertise, offering access to worlds where past, present, and future converge. The third issue, Archivio N°11, focuses on technology and is curated by Massimo Banzi, co-founder of Arduino, together with Cecilia Botta, technology historian and Head of Memories at Promemoria Group, the magazine's publisher. Daniela Hamaui oversees editorial direction, while Alessandro Gori shapes the art direction. The cover, designed by artist Ailadi, pays tribute to the early aesthetics of the digital age. Created using PETSCII, the character set of Commodore 8-bit computers, it evokes the visual language of technology in its formative years. Archivio N°11 maps the international landscape of technology archives, tracing the roots of the digital revolution and exploring the places where our technological past is preserved, along with the collectors and institutions that recognized its cultural value.

Résumé:
The first English translation of a radical and influential theory of art by a leader of Poland’s avant-garde After World War II, socialist realism became the official state doctrine of art in Poland, with abstract works deemed counterrevolutionary and forbidden from public view. Wladyslaw Strzeminski, a leader of the Polish constructivist avant-garde, developed a treatise of visual consciousness as a foundation for progressive art, emphasizing art’s autonomy. His application of Marxist aesthetics to the physiology of seeing is expressed in Theory of Seeing, which was published posthumously in 1958 by his students from notes collected from his lectures. Preceding the comparable perspectives developed by Jacques Rancière, David Hockney, and John Berger, and even the cinema of Jean-Luc Godard, Strzeminski’s "Theory of seeing" introduces the radical and groundbreaking ideas of one of Poland’s most important artists to English-speaking audiences for the first time.

Résumé:
Building in existing fabric conserves resources, saves energy, and reduces carbon emissions – good reasons to choose conversion over new build. Yet there is another, less tangible dimension: time. With additions and adaptations, patina and cracks, it leaves its mark and stores memories in the buildings. To carry these stories forward requires sensitivity to materials, spaces, and histories. Deciding what remains and what is replaced demands careful judgment. Some interventions are so discreet that only trained eyes notice them, often compared by architects to the restoration of a classic car. Others are more radical: ceiling panels titled and set diagonally into a room, or large atriums cut into the existing architecture. At times, we may need to rethink our ingrained aesthetics and ask whether materials with a problematic reputation – such as fibre cement panels (Eternit) – can still be used, or whether cut edges might be left uncovered.

Résumé:
This study of the role that graphic design played in American art of the 1960s and 1970s focuses on the work of George Maciunas, Ed Ruscha, and Sheila Levrant de Bretteville. Examining how each of these artists utilized typography, materiality, and other graphic design aesthetics, Benoît Buquet reveals the importance of graphic design in creating a sense of coherence within the disparate international group of Fluxus artists, an elusiveness and resistance to categorization that defined much of Ruscha’s brand of Pop Art, and an open and participatory visual identity for a range of feminist art practices. Rigorous and compelling scholarship and a copious illustration program that presents insightful juxtapositions of objects—some of which have never been discussed before—combine to shed new light on a period of abundant creativity and cultural transition in American art and the intimate, though often overlooked, entwinement between art and graphic design.

Résumé:
In this publication, Victoria Newhouse addresses the aesthetics and acoustics in concert halls and opera houses of the past, present, and future. Site and Sound explores the daunting, perennial question: Does the music serve the space, or the other way around? Newhouse starts with a survey of venues from ancient Greek and Roman times and progresses to contemporary works around the world. She singles out Lincoln Center in particular for its long history and its transitions and remodelings over the years. Two major chapters cover the present: one focuses on recent work in the West, including the National Opera House of Norway in Oslo by Snohetta (2008), the Casa da Musica in Porto, Portugal, by Rem Koolhaas (2005), and many more; the second examines the boom in concert halls in China. A final chapter looks at projects that are currently planned and the future of an architecture for music.

Résumé:
This irreverent survey celebrates the more populist and enduring work in graphic and industrial design that was a product of the Soviet era - a period that remains politically sensitive and under-explored, yet whose influence on the objects and aesthetics of Russian life and thought has been profound. "Made in Russia" presents fifty such masterpieces, from pioneers of Soviet technology such as the Sputnik, the Buran snowmobile, and the LOMO camera to icons of quotidian culture such as the fishnet shopping bag, the beveled glass, a Cold War-inspired arcade game, and Misha the Olympic bear. Edited by the journalist and author Michael Idov - a Soviet product himself - and including essays from Boris Kachka, Vitaly Komar, Gary Shteyngart, and Lara Vapnyar, the collection explores the provenance of these objects in the forgotten Soviet culture and the unique climate for design from which they could only have emerged.

Hailed upon its publication as “discriminating, erudite, and eclectic,” From Lascaux to Brooklyn is now available to readers once again. First published in 1996, the year of Paul Rand’s death, the volume embarks on a wonderful journey from the time before graphic design to the author’s own studio work and beyond. An excellent companion to Rand’s Design, Form, and Chaos, this book awakens readers to the lessons of the cave paintings of Lascaux and demonstrates how this learning is later conveyed in artworks ranging from the Tower of Pisa to a Cézanne painting, an African sculpture, or a park in Brooklyn. Topics discussed include the relationship between art and business, the presentation of design concepts to prospective clients, the debate over typographic style, and the aesthetics of combinatorial geometry. This book engages and enlightens anyone interested in the practice or theory of graphic design.

Résumé:
In Unlocking the Church, William Whyte explores a forgotten revolution in social and architectural history and in the history of the Church. He details the architectural and theological debates of the day, explaining how the Tractarians of Oxford and the Ecclesiologists of Cambridge were embroiled in the aesthetics of architecture, and how the Victorians profoundly changed the ways in which buildings were understood and experienced. No longer mere receptacles for worship, churches became active agents in their own rights, capable of conveying theological ideas and designed to shape people's emotions. These church buildings are now a challenge: their maintenance, repair or repurposing are pressing problems for parishes in age of declining attendance and dwindling funds. By understanding their past, unlocking the secrets of their space, there might be answers in how to deal with the legacy of the Victorians now and into the future.

Résumé:
Vernon Lee-a pseudonym of Violet Paget (1856-1935)-is the most important female aesthetician to come out of 19th-century England. Though she was widely known for her supernatural fictions, Lee never gained the recognition she so clearly deserved for her contributions in the fields of aesthetics, philosophy of empathy and art criticism. An early follower of Walter Pater, she wrote with an extreme attention to her own responses to artworks, and a level of psychological sensitivity rarely seen in any aesthetic writing. Today, she is largely understudied and rarely read, her aesthetic writings long out of print. Now, David Zwirner Books reintroduces her writing through the first-ever English publication of The Psychology of an Art Writer (1903) along with selections from her groundbreaking Gallery Diaries (1901-4), breathtaking accounts of Lee’s own experiences with the great paintings and sculptures she traveled to see.
