Résumé:
Wallace Neff may have been the preeminent architect of Spanish colonial-revival houses in Southern California. Neff was an inventive designer who was not only adept at manipulating traditional styles to please famous, wealthy clients like Cary Grant, Claudette Colbert, and Darryl Zanuck; he was also a pioneer in low-cost housing and pneumatic building. The Bubble House, as his best-known Airform structure was fondly nicknamed, had a social vision as compelling as that of any modernist housing project. "Wallace Neff and the grand houses of the golden state" tells the life story of this architect, who was raised as Southern California aristocracy - an heir to one of the founders of Rand McNally & Company -- and grew up to influence the course of architectural history in California. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white archival photographs that document Neff's family life and professional accomplishments, journalist Diane Kanner's compelling narrative offers a behind-the-scenes look at the development of residential architecture in Southern California.

Résumé:
Three series of intricate graphite drawings depict, with arresting realism, real-world examples of assembled, grown, and built objects common to distinct milieus of Vancouver: the shopping carts piled high with belongings that clatter along sidewalks in the downtown core; the long, high hedges that insulate single-family homes from the din of arterial traffic; and the sculptural lions placed for good luck atop fenceposts in front of many homes, especially on the city's east side. In creating snapshots and then laborious drawings of these objects, Taizo Yamamoto, the principal of Yamamoto Architecture, was driven by a fascination with how the recurrence of these seemingly mundane objects speaks to omnipresent issues of housing unaffordability, densification, and the aspirations of diasporic communities - concerns that have an uneasy relationship to celebrated narratives of Vancouver but play a prominent role in residents' everyday lives. To this work he brings not just sustained careful attention but an architect's eye for details both structural and textural, resulting in immersive, richly nuanced drawings.

In 1966, at the age of 28, photographer Joel Meyerowitz embarked on a journey that would take him to the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Eastern Europe, Turkey and Greece. In total, he drove 20,000 miles through 10 countries and ended up taking 25,000 photographs. This trip was a transcendental experience and formative in shaping Meyerowitz's instinctive and brilliant identity that he is known for today. Europa 1966–1967 compiles a selection of photographs taken by Meyerowitz on his yearlong trip through Europe, offering an exciting glimpse of the “New Old World” that, having lately overcome the trauma of World War II, opened itself to modernity and progress. Meyerowitz witnessed societies in transition, stuck between dictatorship and economic blossoming. Yet he also documented unshakable cultural traditions, such as when he lived with a flamenco-performing family in Francoist Spain for six months. The strength and freshness of Meyerowitz’s gaze and the new codes that were captured in these pictures inspired the next generation of photographers.

Ari Marcopoulos is best known for documenting boyish subcultures from the inside out. His work on professional snowboarding appears in Transitions and Exits and his photos on hip-hop--five years of images of the Beastie Boys--in Pass the Mic. Aaron Rose, who showed Marcopoulos at Alleged Gallery, has said of the artist's uncanny connection with one set of subjects, a crowd of New York skateboarders ten years his junior, "There was just something in his personality that said, 'Hey man, it's cool.'" It shows. Marcopoulos's self-taught snapshot style brings his subjects in close, and captures, without sentimentality or voyeurism, the intimate feeling of their daily life. Here he focuses on the subculture that is his own family. Even the President of the United States Sometimes Has Got to Stand Naked is a journal-like collection of images of the accidents and pleasures of "normal" life, full of the artist's loved ones, of landscapes and of American social reality.

Résumé:
In "Dark Age Ahead", Jane Jacobs identifies five pillars of our culture that we depend on but which are in serious decline: community and family; higher education; the effective practice of science; taxation and government; and self-policing by learned professions. The decay of these pillars, Jacobs contends, is behind such ills as environmental crisis, racism and the growing gulf between rich and poor; their continued degradation could lead us into a new Dark Age, a period of cultural collapse in which all that keeps a society alive and vibrant is forgotten. But this is a hopeful book as well as a warning. Jacobs draws on her vast frame of reference -- from fifteenth-century Chinese shipbuilding to zoning regulations in Brampton, Ontario -- and in highly readable, invigorating prose offers proposals that could arrest the cycles of decay and turn them into beneficent ones. Wise, worldly, full of real-life examples and accessible concepts, this book is an essential read for perilous times.

Résumé:
The suburbs house two-thirds of North America's population and are the subject of much debate and criticism. "Planning the new suburbia", by Avi Friedman, explores this phenomenon and proposes ways to respond to the challenge of creating affordable, adaptable, and environmentally sustainable neighbourhoods. An architect and planner, Friedman suggests new methods of design and regulation that would enable urban planners to conceive and inhabitants to adapt suburban communities and homes to their evolving needs, as a result of changing family size, an aging population, or new working conditions. Friedman surveys the evolution of urban planning, the history of "ideal" communities, the development of North American suburbs, and the theory behind flexible suburban design. Three case studies offer practical examples of his approach, and all are generously illustrated with drawings, plans, and photographs to demonstrate Friedman's ideas in action. Rather than dismissing a suburb as an unattractive, impersonal sprawl, Friedman shows how they can be modified into an affordable, sustainable, and adaptable community.

Résumé:
Celebrated as one of the most innovative and daring architects of the twentieth century, Bruce Goff (1904–1982) imagined a truly independent modern American architecture throughout his six-decade-long career, which began when he was just twelve years old, working as an apprentice at an architectural firm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Distinguishing himself from the restrained modernism of the postwar period, Goff created single-family homes that were at once livable and adventurous, featuring radical spatial relationships, and designed fantastical large-scale commercial and industrial spaces. His architectural legacy often overshadows his equally experimental artistic career; this book explores the full sweep of Goff’s creativity, which flowed between media and artistic practices. It highlights 150 objects, including architectural drawings and models; abstract paintings; and photographs, ephemera, and building fragments. Inspired by a range of cultural and artistic traditions, from Native American art to Japanese joinery and the landscapes of science fiction, Goff’s work represents a unique synthesis of diverse influences.

Résumé:
Over the course of just two months in 1965, at a residency at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, the Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa produced a stunning portfolio of 54 lithographs, depicting organic forms and plants as well as family and friends. The Tamarind Workshop had been founded by artist June Wayne in Los Angeles in 1960 in an effort to revitalize lithography as a fine art, and offered artists the opportunity to work in collaboration with master printers. For Asawa, it was a rare chance to focus on a single medium and opened up a new chapter of artmaking for her. A testament to Asawa's radically experimental and collaborative ethos, the Tamarind prints present a discrete chapter of her oeuvre, encapsulating many of the artist's emblematic motifs. Published in celebration of the artist's centennial in 2026, this exquisitely produced book illustrates each lithograph made during her residency at the Tamarind Workshop, which have never been published as a complete series.
