Résumé:
This catalogue to the CCA's exhibition presents four of the most representative and best documented of the artificial excavation projects: an urban design scheme for Cannaregio West in Venice (1978); a housing project near Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin (1980-1981, partially realized 1982-1986); a design for the University Art Museum at California State University, Long Beach (1986); and Chora L Works (1985-1986), a garden for the Parc de La Villette in Paris designed in collaboration with Jacques Derrida. Each project is presented through the architect's drawings and models, over 200 images in all, more than 150 of them in colour, most from the collections of the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Each project sequence begins with a theoretical text by Eisenman, then goes on to a project history describing the site and explaining Eisenman's design strategy. The unprecedented publication of complete series of conceptual drawings not only illustrates Eisenman's design process in detail, but also traces the transformation, through drawing and model making, of his architectural discourse. With essays by Alan Balfour, Yve-Alain Bois, Jean-François Bédard, Jean-Louis Cohen, Kurt W. Forster, K. Michael Hays, Arata Isozaki, and Fredric Jameson.

Résumé:
In spring 2000, as the Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at Yale University, Zaha Hadid led an intense studio on the topic of the contemporary art center. Such centers are proliferating across the United States and around the world, yet their architectural form remains abstract and open-ended, subject to continual reinterpretation. Hadid’s studio - one leader, three studio assistants, twelve students, and numerous critics - interpreted the contemporary art center as an invitation to experiment with new forms of public space. Specific contemporary works of art became the programme for a series of radical architectural concepts that expand the space of the art, taking on the scale and materiality of full-scale architectural constructs. The studio - and this volume - was divided into ten segments, addressing such issues as programme analysis, spatialities, system conditions, current contemporary art centers, building types, sites, and linearities. Each segment is represented by original renderings, including computer images. The accompanying text is drawn from transcripts of the studio reviews by the critics: Robert A. M. Stern, dean of the Yale School of Architecture; Terence Riley and Paola Antonelli of the Museum of Modern Art; and architects, critics, and scholars Jeffrey Kipnis, Thomas Krens, Sulan Kolatan, William MacDonald, Fabian Marcaccio, Rebeca Mendez, Paola Sanguinetti, Joseph Giovannini, Marc Cousins, Greg Lynn, and Gail Witwer.

In a public park in the Hague, British artist Nils Norman (born 1966) has devised an unusual work of art: one that grows and blossoms and produces delicious fruit and vegetables. Norman's "Edible Park" was developed using the principles of permaculture, a form of vegetable gardening in which different plants are combined in such a way that they complement one another's needs as they grow. More than just a gardening model, permaculture is a nature-based design philosophy that can be used as a guide for architecture, product design and to improve society in general. In Edible Park, Norman explains his methods, his sources of inspiration and the artistic and social-critical context around his work.

Résumé:
The museum is constantly a target for criticism, whether it comes from artists, thinkers, curators, or even the public. From the avant-gardes of the twentieth century up until our contemporary era, the museum s suspect position has generated countless gestures, iconoclastic actions, scathing attacks, utopias, and alternative exhibition spaces. For the first time, this anthology is devoted to the anti-museum, through anti-art, the anti-artist, anti-exhibition, as well as anti-architecture, anti-philosophy, anti-religion, anti-cinema and anti-music. This notion - unpatented but regularly reappropriated - traces the erratic, fractured, and sometimes paradoxical counter-history of the contestation of artistic institutions. From the first anti-exhibition to the first catalog retracing the history of "Closed Exhibitions" from Dada to Noise music, from "Everything is Art" to NO!art, the Japanese avant-gardes to Lettrist cinema, and not forgetting such major protest figures as Gustav Metzger, Henry Flynt, Graciela Carnevale, and Lydia Lunch, "The anti-museum" sketches a polyphonic panorama where negation is accompanied by a powerful breath of life.

Résumé:
Daniela Keiser ranks among the most renowned contemporary artists in Switzerland. In 2017 she was awarded the Swiss national art prize Prix Meret Oppenheim as well as a studio grant from Landis & Gyr Stiftung that enabled her to embark on an extended stay in London’s East End. There she discovered the Idea Store, the public library on Whitechapel Road built by British architect David Adjaye. Upon its opening to the public, this institution quickly became a meeting place for a broad spectrum of society, including socially disadvantaged people. The goal of the Idea Stores—eight of them have been opened in various London boroughs since 2005— is to enhance formerly neglected neighborhoods and offer a low-threshold source of education and information. From that initial Idea Store on Whitechapel Road, Daniela Keiser began to take pictures of the goings-on in the street outside. Her "Library—Idea Store, 321 Whitechapel Rd, Shadwell, London E1 1BU series" reveals a calm, repetitive, but insistent image of the city and offers insight into the small everyday variations of the surrounding world. This book pairs her photographic reflections with a conversation between David Adjaye and art and architecture historian Philip Ursprung. They talk about Keiser’s perception of the site and—without actually showing the building—the impact of urban design and the architect’s intentions.

This book provides the first comprehensive overview of Steiner's creative work, while also examining his historic roots and his ongoing influence. Several essays by different authors approach the phenomenon of Steiner from a variety of perspectives, examining topics such as the period in which his work evolved, the way that Steiner combined natural and spiritual science, his work in architecture, design and stage performance, and his influence on tendencies in present-day art. The essays are supplemented by an extensive catalogue section which presents Steiner's major works and compares them to those of important contemporaries and current artists. An illustrated biography completes the book, which represents the first effort to introduce an important figure of the twentieth century to a wide public.

Résumé:
From Gordon Matta-Clark to Lawrence Weiner, Bruce Nauman to Alison Knowles, the question of site locates itself in issues of public space, at the intersection of the imagined and the real, at the juncture of performance and architectural production. By anthologizing essays, documents, and interviews by leading critics, historians, and artists on issues of site-specificity, conceptualism, feminism, and architecture practice, "Surface Tension" reveals the connections between cultural production and the very spaces in which such work functions. These textual explorations are complemented by extensive documentation of related projects, both historical and contemporary, by artists, architects, and performance artists, including 'Coughing Piece', a never-before released 1961 audio work by Yoko Ono; an obscure audio work by Nauman from 1969; projects by Suzanne Lacy, a leading figure in the development of conceptual practice and public art; and an experimental text by Jane Rendell on psychic architectures. Conversations occur between the pages of "Surface Tension", between theoretical analysis and modes of practice, that activate the publication as a site itself, one participating in a broad field of knowledge. Includes an audio CD of the sound art pieces. Artists Include: Gordon Matta-Clark, Lawrence Weiner,Jan Hofer, Melissa Dyne, Kim Abeles, Carol Brown, Christof Migone, Michael Rakowitz, Eyal Weizman, Rafael Lazano-Hemmer, Tanja Jordan, Lizzie Scott, Tim Durfee, Lize Mogel, Suzanne Lacy, Michael Asher, Bruce Nauman, Lucky Kitchen, Michael Prime, Alison Knowles, and Yoko Ono, amongst others.
