The title of this beautiful Penguin Classic look-alike collection of essays and pictures is taken from a poem that Michael Elmgreen wrote when he was 19 years old. The poem describes, in its own simple, youthful manner, issues of emotional homelessness. Home traditionally alludes to family, local context and nationality--to structures which are pre-set and often disconnected to one's individual desires. The Norwegian-Danish artist duo asked friends and colleagues to react to their own notions of home--as a place they left... or didn't. Featuring texts and image-based contributions by the likes of Bill Arning, Henrik Olesen, Jakob Kolding, Monica Bonvicini, Jens Hoffmann and David Shrigley, among many others. Berlin-based Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset have collaborated since 1995. They have had recent solo exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery in London and The Power Plant in Toronto.

Bitterfeld’s county museum, Kreismuseum Bitterfeld, contains a black box with herbaria dating from 1931. This collection, compiled by botanist Hans Weber, is an inventory of the flora gathered in the nearby Goitzsche region, a forested area of floodplain. It was not long before the plant life collected here was forced to give way to society’s demand for brown coal. Taking the herbaria as its starting point, this book interweaves stories about Bitterfeld’s energy-defined landscape with the modern legacy of the Bauhaus. Using archival documents, physical interventions, and field studies, the book proposes a new reading of the Bauhaus’s modernist motto ”Light! Air! Sun!“ recast as ”Heat, Breath, Growth“. The book thus points up the downside of resource extraction and environmental destruction in the ”clean modern age“, while also identifying movements in search of a nature-based culture characterized by care and stewardship.

Pour la première fois depuis 500 ans, les 337 plantes peintes par Bourdichon, peintre royal, dans les célèbres Grandes Heures d'Anne de Bretagne, sont ici présentées hors de ce manuscrit. Celui-ci, l'un des joyaux de la Bibliothèque nationale de France, est précieux et fragile. De ce fait, rares sont ceux qui au fil des siècles y ont accès. Ayant eu ce privilège, l'auteur a voulu faire partager son émerveillement. Elle a donc mis à profit les connaissances et la rigueur acquises, aussi bien comme " jardinière " (amateur, mais néanmoins passionnée !), qu'au cours de sa carrière d'ingénieur archéologue au C.N.R.S. Patiemment, elle a étudié une à une ces plantes peintes de façon si réaliste sur leur fond d'or. Puis, assemblant chacune d'entre elles par familles et affinités, elle a composé un paysage virtuel mais plausible, avec ses arbres, ses champs, vignes et jardins... Elle nous entraîne en une promenade imaginaire, au cours de laquelle nous retrouvons toutes ces plantes avec leurs origines, leurs légendes, leurs rôles, leurs utilisations. Vedettes ou humbles figurantes, elles étaient et restent la vie même comme nous le redécouvrons. Pour nous qui aujourd'hui avons de plus en plus tendance à nous tourner vers leurs pouvoirs bienfaisants, cet ouvrage est une source de découvertes, d'étonnement et d'admiration.

As global rates of plant and animal extinctions mount, anxieties about the future of the earth’s ecosystems are fueling ever more ambitious efforts at conservation, which draw on Western scientific principles to manage species and biodiversity. In "Revenant ecologies," Audra Mitchell argues that these responses not only ignore but also magnify powerful forms of structural violence like colonialism, racism, genocide, extractivism, ableism, and heteronormativity, ultimately contributing to the destruction of unique life forms and ecosystems. Critiquing the Western discourse of global extinction and biodiversity through the lens of diverse Indigenous philosophies and other marginalized knowledge systems, "Revenant ecologies," promotes new ways of articulating the ethical enormity of global extinction. Mitchell offers an ambitious framework—(bio)plurality—that focuses on nurturing unique, irreplaceable worlds, relations, and ecosystems, aiming to transform global ecological–political relations, including through processes of land return and critically confronting discourses on "human extinction."
