Résumé:
Lotte Reiniger (1899–1981) is a much loved figure in the early history of animated film. At an early age Reiniger discovered the Chinese art of silhouette puppetry, and made her first silhouettes for a school performance. Growing up during the early years of cinema, she fell in love with the films of Georges Méliès and Paul Wegener, and found imaginative ways to adapt the craft of silhouette-making and shadow puppetry to the possibilities of animation. Reiniger elicited effects of motion from the inflexibility of silhouettes, and even introduced cultural quotations from the works of Charlie Chaplin or Josephine Baker into her magical films. This book reproduces three of her most beautiful silhouette series: versions of Mozart’s Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro, and an animal alphabet.

Résumé:
In Sonic Somatic, the sound artist and theorist Christof Migone looks at sound art's overlap with other disciplines through its particular uses of articulation. Articulation is explored here in all of its guises: its negation as silence, its interruption in stuttering and its somatic ramifications in the human body. Migone looks at French playwright and poet Antonin Artaud's writings, with their implications of strangled speech and glossolalia; American composer Alvin Lucier's groundbreaking 1969 recording “I Am Sitting in a Room”; Erik Satie's looped composition “Vexations”; Marina Abramovic's confrontational performance “Rhythm 0”; Adrian Piper's “Untitled Performance for Max's Kansas City”; Herman Melville's short story “Bartleby, the Scrivener”; Bob Connolly and Robin Anderson's documentary film First Contact; and of course the work that most looms over this topic: John Cage's paradigm-shifting 1952 composition “4'33” .”

Tokyo 1955–1970: A New Avant-Garde explores the extraordinary convergence of artists and other creators in Japan’s capital city during the radically transformative postwar period. Examining works from a range of media--painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, printmaking, video and film, as well as graphic design, architecture, musical composition and dance--this is the first publication in English to focus in depth on the full scope of postwar art in Japan. Essays by scholars Hayashi Michio and Miryam Sas and curator Mika Yoshitake discuss critical concepts in art and culture at this time, including “graphism,” which manifested itself across various mediums; the development of new sculptural languages; and the “intermedia” tendency that engendered provocative cross-pollination among artistic genres. Masatoshi Nakajima provides an illustrated chronology and Yuri Mitsuda supplies artist biographies.

Résumé:
In her works, Ulla von Brandenburg interlinks various genres to create highly symbolic, staged presentations: sculpture, installation and film, performance, fashion and music, silhouettes and wall drawings. The exhibition space becomes a stage for her examination of the various modes of expression found in theater, the play with fiction and reality, role and identity. For her solo exhibition in the Darmstadt Artists' Colony Museum, Ulla von Brandenburg focuses on an installation developed specifically for this venue, which stands in connection with the unique history of the Mathildenhöhe as a think tank and experimental laboratory of modernism. She stages works from the Darmstadt Municipal Art Collection in combination with her own objects, whereby the focus is laid not only on the historic reception of the works, but also on questions of presentation, perception, and mediation.

Résumé:
Americans, on average, spend between six and ten seconds with individual artworks in museums or galleries—hardly time enough. But how, in our culture of distraction, might we extend attention? "Slow Art" models sustained ways of looking, through encounters with various media both present and past—including photography, painting, sculpture, “living pictures,” film, video, digital and performance art—even light and space. Works by Diderot, Emma Hamilton, Oscar Wilde, Jeff Wall, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Andy Warhol, and Richard Serra, among others, shape a new and distinct aesthetic field. But rather than a collection of objects, slow art is participatory—it directly engages beholders to bring artworks to life. Against current orthodoxy, Arden Reed argues that, for contemporary viewers, the contemplation of slow art is akin to religious practices during the ages of faith.

Résumé:
Seen through the eyes of an architect and photographer, The Architecture of Natural Light considers the many effects of natural illumination in contemporary buildings. This comprehensive survey begins with exploring the advances and experimentation of architects throughout the centuries. Each of the following chapters is devoted to a specific quality of natural light, including evanescence, atomization, and luminescence, and examines the particular uses of light through many disciplines—from art history to film and literature. With more than fifty case studies of buildings from around the world, this volume considers works by some of the world’s most influential architects, including Tadao Ando, Steven Holl, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Zumthor, Frank Gehry, Álvaro Siza, Alberto Campo Baeza, Rafael Moneo, Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel, Fumihiko Maki, and Toyo Ito, among others.

Chanel head designer Karl Lagerfeld founded Métiers d'Arts in 2002 to showcase the talents of Chanel's seven specialist ateliers (that provide the couture house with costume jewelry, embroidery and millinery). This volume focuses on Chanel's 2008-2009 Métiers d'Arts collection Paris-Moscow. If Paris-Moscow indulges Lagerfeld's fascination for Russia through fashion, then Russian Connection is that fascination embodied in book form. Lagerfeld's images evoke Imperial Russia, Constructivism, Catherine the Great, Fabergé, Russian folklore and Coco Chanel's own passion for Russia, via the great Ballets Russes, Byzantine jewelry and her affair with the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich. Included here is a DVD featuring Lagerfeld's directorial debut, Coco 1913/Chanel 1923, a silent black-and-white film depicting Chanel's flirtation with Russian-Parisian émigré society in the 1910s and 1920s.
