Résumé:
"EVIL," the theme of this latest issue of TEXTE ZUR KUNST is often understood as simply the opposite of “good,” and as pure immorality, evil is everywhere today, and somehow also nowhere. It is the “other” par excellence; something we ourselves never are, but by which one always measures one’s own distance. “Evil is over there, not here, not with me.” Given its ubiquity today, we offer texts that investigate what this thing we call “evil” is, as it so often functions as the polar opposite of that which people hold to be just and right. Indeed, who could argue that point, and yet. In this issue, we look specifically at evil’s manifestations in the art world, and in film, politics, and theory, always with an eye toward evil as something potentially playful and ironic.

Résumé:
This publication looks at the impact of fur on society, politics, and, of course, fashion. This material has a long, complex, and rich history, culminating in recent and ongoing anti-fur debates. Jonathan Faiers discusses how fur — long praised for its warmth, softness, and connotation of status — became so controversial, at the center of campaigns against animal cruelty and the movement toward ethical fashion. At the same time, fake fur now faces a backlash of its own, given the environmental impact of its manufacture and its links to fast fashion. Divided into five sections — dedicated to hair, pelt, coat, skin, and fleece — the book surveys not only the politics of fur but also its centrality to western fashion, the tactile pleasure it gives, and its use in literature, art, and film.

Gutai: Splendid Playground surveys the influential Japanese collective and artistic movement. This exhibition catalogue aims to demonstrate the range of bold and innovative creativity present in the avant-garde movement, to examine the aesthetic strategies in the cultural, social and political context of postwar Japan and the West, and to further establish Gutai in an expanded, transnational history and critical discourse of modern art. Organized thematically and chronologically to explore Gutai’s unique approach to materials, concepts, process, performativity and enviroment, this publication investigates the group’s radical experimentation across a range of media and styles, and demonstrates how individual artists pushed the limits of what art could be or mean in a post-atomic era. The range includes painting, conceptual art, performance, film, installation art, sound art, interactive art, light art and kinetic art.

Résumé:
The Polish Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale will have the pleasure of presenting a panoramic film projection of the opera Halka by Stanislaw Moniuszko, as it was staged in February for the inhabitants of Cazale, a village situated in the mountains of Haiti. The winners of this year's contest for the official Polish representation in Venice, artists C.T. Jasper and Joanna Malinowska and curator Magdalena Moskalewicz, decided to stage the opera in Haiti inspired by the mad plan of Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo, who wanted to build an opera house in the Amazon. Fascinated by Fitzcarraldo's faith in the universal power of opera, but not uncritical of the colonizing aspect of his actions, they decided to reveal and undercut its romanticism by confronting a set of very specific geographic, historical, and sociopolitical realities.

Résumé:
The book serves as a histirical survey of architectural lighting throughout the twentieth century and also examines the cultural, social, and artistic issues surrounding this phenomenon. During the 1920's and 1930's architectural floodlighting was at its most intense, considered an essentially modern abstract art form that crossed the boundaries between film, architecture, and painting. "Architecture of the Night" explores this dynamic period in depth, considers its impact today, and addresses the new issues that confront contemporary lighting, such as "light pollution", conservation, and aesthetics. The book features close to 200 illustrations and examines 100 examples of building illumination, including the Paris Opera House (1880), the Gas and Electric Building, Denver (1910), the Empire State Building, New York (1931), the Seagram Building, New York (1958), the Lloyds Building, London (1988) and the Anzeiger Hochhaus, Hanover (2000).

Résumé:
This concise and beautiful exhibition catalogue features arresting, colorful, Rorschach Test-like photograms of flowers by the Los Angeles-based conceptual photographer James Welling. For this series, Welling placed the blossoms of a common southern California plant on sheets of 8x10 film and exposed them to light. The negatives were then projected onto special photo paper through a color mural enlarger and color filters, to produce the dramatic, spectral, almost sun - or moon - dappled images reproduced here. Currently a professor of fine art at UCLA, Welling studied at CalArts in the early 1970s. Welling was the subject of a midcareer retrospective at the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2000, which traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. He is represented in New York by David Zwirner Gallery and in Los Angeles by Regen Projects.

Résumé:
Orri Jónsson was holidaying one summer in the north of Iceland with his family, when he stumbled upon an abandoned farmhouse and began taking photos of it. Fascinated with the results but disappointed by the restrictions of the 35mm film he had used, he returned to the motif with a large-format analogue camera. Orri thus photographed the gloriously decaying interiors of deserted houses throughout Iceland for the next 12 years, and ''Interiors'' contains the best of these images from 1999 to 2010. Painterly in color, rigorous in composition and lacking people, Orri's photos evoke the personal histories of the inhabitants who long ago abandoned their homes. ''Interiors'' is shaped by an uncanny silence and sense of loss, most poignant in the images of objects people left behind--old buttons, newspapers and even a hot water bottle--tokens of vanished lives.

This peek through the porthole across three months worth of daily publishing gathers together long-form essays on contemporary culture and architecture, exhibition, book, and film reviews, profiles of artists, critical interjections, fresh translations from the historic avant-garde, and analytical dispatches from live political and social conjunctures. These have been recomposed into eleven thematic sections, to help us get some perspective (however vertiginous) on the present moment and emergent tendencies in critical discourse.

Résumé:
Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca is a key figure in contemporary art. His work is inspired by architecture, dance, film, and cartography. The "Theatre collages" were created between 2003 and 2004 based on plans of famous theatres and opera houses. By carefully reassembling the elements of their interiors, Kuitca transforms their balconies and rows of seats into undulating abstractions and elaborate forms. The predictable regularity of the auditorium seats is broken up by a dynamic rhythm reminiscent of musical notation that plays with the dynamic relationship between the stage and the audience. The second part of the book is dedicated to "The ring" (2003–2004) a four-part series based on Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle. Kuitca used album covers of historic recordings of these operas to create collages that powerfully evoke the voices and the music behind the famous names and titles.

Résumé:
"A variability quantifier" is an artwork intended to function as an operational weather station. Located on Fogo Island to the north of Newfoundland, it gathers local weather data and is a place for education, reflection, and discussion. A year after the installation of the work Liam Gillick returned to Fogo to make a documentary film about his work. This resulted in two separate films that make use of the same footage. In "Variability quantified" we hear Nobel Prize winning climatologist Syukuro Manabe explaining the science of global heating and his pioneering work modeling earth’s climate in the 1960s. In "Quantified variability" the artist dramatically altered the natural colors in the footage and set it to a layered soundtrack of automated industrial production. This book is a record of the two films alongside a discussion with art historian Tom McDonough.
