Résumé:
After the Seagram Building in New York, the Toronto-Dominion Centre in Toronto, the New National Gallery in Berlin and the Lake Shore Drive Apartment Buildings in Chicago, architect Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) designed a gas station near Montreal in 1968. This simple and utilitarian building reflects the divergent views held by experts and laymen regarding "everyday" structures, which most of us tend to ignore. In addition to exploring the interplay of form and function in the works of Mies, this film gauges our awareness of architectural language and the role of the architect in society. Observations from some superstars of the world of architecture, including Rem Koolhaas, Elizabeth Diller and Phyllis Lambert, are interlaced with anecdotes from regular people who come into daily contact with the eminent architect's work. Original soundtrack is composed by acclaimed Ramachandra Borcar (a.k.a. DJ Ram). Format: DVD.

Résumé:
An early advocate of color photography, Joel Meyerowitz has impacted and influenced generations of artists. For fifty-eight years, the master photographer has documented the United States’ ever-changing social landscape. During the late 1960s, Meyerowitz carried two cameras: one loaded with monochrome stock, the other with color. Just how, when, and why American fine art photographers switched from black-and-white image-making, prized within the gallery system, to color photography, once seen as the preserve of tourist photography, has been the cause of much debate. In ''Joel Meyerowitz: A Question of Color'', Meyerowitz tells the story of his early days as a photographer when he was told that serious photographers took black-and-white pictures. “But why,” he asked, “when the world is in color?” He then bought a color camera and various rolls of film and began to experiment with color techniques: a passion he continues to pursue.

Résumé:
Robert Frank is one of the most influential of all post-war photographers. Pioneering a revolutionary approach to photography and filmmaking, he combines autobiographical and poetic elements to produce straight black-and-white images that transcend the specific. Speaking of universal experience, Frank has said, "I'm trying to forget easy photo, trying to make something from within." He adds, "Time moves on and never stops or waits." Often involving a progression through a series of images, his work is structured like a musical sequence, creating storylines that resonate beyond the frozen moment of any single photograph. "Storylines" accompanies an exhibition highlighting Frank's experimental use of narrative in photography and film. The exhibition consists of his films and photographs, including Polaroids, contact sheets, and recent digital stills. Photographs from locations as diverse as Peru, London, Wales, Coney Island, and Chicago, appear along with several artist's books.

Résumé:
Since its publication in 1936, Walter Benjamin's "Artwork" essay has become a canonical text about the status and place of the fine arts in modern mass culture. Benjamin was especially concerned with the ability of new technologies--notably film, sound recording, and photography--to reproduce works of art in great number. Benjamin could not have foreseen the explosion of imagery and media that has occurred during the past fifty years. Does Benjamin's famous essay still speak to this new situation? That is the question posed by the editors of this book to a wide range of leading scholars and thinkers across a spectrum of disciplines in the humanities. The essays gathered here do not hazard a univocal reply to that question; rather they offer a rich, wide-ranging critique of Benjamin's position that refracts and reflects contemporary thinking about the ethical, political, and aesthetic implications of life in the digital age.

Celebrated in the 1930s, forgotten during the postwar period and now rediscovered, Piero Portaluppi (1888–1967) was a leading figure of 20th-century Italian architecture. Portaluppi designed the Italian Pavilion for the Universal Exposition in Barcelona in 1929; created numerous industrial buildings; was choice designer of residences for Milanese high society; and between 1956 and 1962 collaborated on architectural projects with Gio Ponti. Produced in collaboration with the Fondazione Piero Portaluppi, this monograph comprises an extensive photo album featuring new colour images of Portaluppi’s projects taken by the renowned photographer Ciro Frank Schiappa; three previously unpublished essays, illustrated with archival photos by Antonio Paoletti; documentation of architectural models; and items documenting his personal interests (cartoons, diagrams, sundials, postcards, newspaper cuttings). The volume also features an interview with Portaluppi’s nephew, the architect Piero Castellini (conducted by film director Luca Guadagnino), a biography, a list of works and a bibliography.

Résumé:
Tibor Kalman, probably best known for the witty designs of his company M and his provocative work for Benetton's Colors magazine, defines the eclectic multidisciplinary approach that has come to characterize graphic design in the past decade. Tibor, designed by Michael Bierut of Pentagram and edited by I.D. Magazine senior writer Peter Hall, is the first comprehensive collection of Kalman's work and ideas. This full-color title--numbering over 400 pages--includes a pictorial manifesto by Kalman, revealing his thoughts on magazines, advertising, sex, bookstores, food, and the design profession. Product designs, stills and storyboards from his film and video projects, and spreads from his book and magazine work are included, creating what Kalman calls "an almanac of oddities." An impressive list of essay contributors includes Steven Heller, David Byrne, Jay Chiat, Kurt Andersen, Paola Antonelli, Isaac Mizrahi, Ingrid Sischy, Chee Pearlman, and Rick Poynor.

Résumé:
When his 24-hour film The Clock was awarded the Golden Lion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, Christian Marclay’s hour had struck. Yet as an artist, performer and pioneer of turntablism, the Swiss-American Christian Marclay (born 1955) had already been famous for his complex oeuvre for more than 30 years, translating sounds and music into visual forms in his performances, installations, collages, sculptures and photographs, creating new sensory experiences that his viewers had never before experienced. Comic books and mangas are the source material for Marclay’s most recent works: the immersive video animation "Surround Sounds" (2014–15) and the series of Onomatopoeia paintings and works on paper inspired by the wet, liquid sounds of painting. Christian Marclay: Action, an extensive monographic survey, covers the entire spectrum of the artist’s multimedia and synaesthetic oeuvre, from previously little-known early works to his most recent paintings and video.
