Résumé:
Colors have a presence over and beyond the objects - buildings, spaces, billboards, artefacts and people - that make up the city. Not only does color give meaning to cities, cities give meaning to color. Whether carefully coordinated, clashing or an expression of materials, color is a powerful cultural, economic and political force in cities. Yet discussions on the city do not usually focus much on color, perhaps because urban colors are too often understood as being beyond any authority or taste or simply dismissed as cosmetic, naive or intangible. Volume 3 of New Geographies brings together artists and designers, anthropologists, historians, planners, and philosophers within the aim of exploring the potency, the interaction, and neglected design possibilities of color at the scale of the city.

Résumé:
Treating cities as laboratories of the modern world, Infrastructures of the Urban examines how they are made and how they should be remade. The contributors— scholars and practitioners from architects and sociologists to physicists— bring to bear empirical analysis, ethnography, eyewitness reflections, cultural critique, and manifestos to explore how improving our material and cultural infrastructure can produce a better society. Topics include the World Trade Center memorial, the planning of the London Olympics, the informal redesign of shanty housing by slum residents in Mumbai and Mozambique, and the more formalized construction of highways and “tech-cities” like Sondgu, South Korea. The contributors show how cities are made and remade daily, as well as how the diverse, unexpected agents involved in the process break down the distinction between experts and laypeople.

Résumé:
Mathematics has always been a vital tool in the architect's trade, but the last fifteen years have seen a sharp rise in the power of computers and has led to computational abilities far beyond anything previously available. Modern design software and computing power have changed the traditional role of geometry in architecture and opened up new possibilities enabled by topology, non-Euclidean geometry, and other areas of mathematics. This new title in the Architectural Design series explores fascinating issues in modern design, most importantly the impact of mathematics on contemporary design creativity.
