Résumé:
This book is a mock film scenario written by the French novelist Jules Romains. It was first published in book form in 1920, and has never been translated into English. The satirical plot concerns a famous geographer whose academic career is about to be derailed by the revelation that he has invented a city in South America. Through a hilarious sequence of events, a suicidal young man finds a new mission in life by undertaking to found the fictional city, thereby redeeming the error and reputation of the absentminded professor. Jules Romains, 1885–1972, is the pseudonym of Louis Farigoule, a French novelist, dramatist, and poet. Romains was the founder of Unanimism, a social-literary theory that posited a collective spirit or personality within society. This concept pervades an early collection of his poems, La Vie unanime (1908), as well as his principal work, the twenty-seven-volume novel cycle, Men of Good Will (1932–46). Translated by Brian Evenson.

Résumé:
In "Faking Death", Penny Cousineau-Levine presents Canadian art photography since 1952 as a coherent body of work and articulates a provocative framework for its interpretation. Contrasting Canadian photography with American and European traditions, she shows that Canadian photographers are often preoccupied with a place that is "elsewhere," a doubling and a duality that also occur in Canadian literature, film, and political life. Exploring the ambivalent preoccupations Canadian photographers have with death and dying, bondage and entrapment, she argues that the forms of death depicted in the works are 'faked' and express a collective Canadian wish for a symbolic passage to national maturity. Penny Cousineau-Levine discusses the works of over 120 artists. The book includes 16 colour reproductions and 150 duotones of photographs by artists such as Raymonde April, Geneviève Cadieux, Lynne Cohen, Donigan Cumming, Evergon, Janieta Eyre, Charles Gagnon, Thaddeus Holownia, Geoffrey James, Michel Lambeth, Ken Lum, Shelley Niro, Gabor Szilasi, Diana Thorneycroft, Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, and Jin-me Yoon.

Résumé:
In an era of climate catastrophe and corporate agribusiness, meat has been decisively made over. Urbanites across the West are called upon to look at the animals we eat, and by looking, learn to treat them with love. We are asked to tenderise our carnal desire for flesh and dignify our relationship with the land. Yet can our appetite for meat be redeemed by this new way of seeing? Can an ‘ethical’ approach to the farming, sale, and consumption of meat really save both the planet and our souls? In ''Meat love'', Amber Husain deconstructs the beauty, tragedy, and mystery with which our images of meat are embellished, drawing on a range of visual sources from contemporary art and film to Instagram and advertising. Probing the nature of ‘love’ in contemporary human-animal relations, this illustrated essay casts a materialist’s critical eye on the visual culture of meat as it gentrifies and mutates, informing, for better or for worse, our political imaginations.

Résumé:
Despite his tragically short career, the influence of Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978) is ever more pervasive. Central to the explosion of creativity in New York's SoHo in the 1970s, Matta-Clark turned his focus on the city itself, slicing through abandoned buildings to create works that were at once large-scale sculptural environments, social commentary and urban performance pieces. His aim was to unravel the grammar of architecture and "turn a building into a state of mind". The 'building cuts' remain Matta-Clark’s best-known works, although today they exist only through film and photographic documentation. Armed with a movie camera, he explored the hidden spaces beneath Paris and London. He handed out free food and 'fresh air' on the streets, created architecture from refuse, and planned visionary architectural projects. His engagement with the urban landscape also led him to set up an artist-run restaurant, Food. This elegant produced book complements an exhibition at the Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow and the Architectural Association, London.

Thousands of artefacts produced throughout the years—ideas, projects, exhibitions, events, reflections, publications, library, thousands of photographs, visual identity packs, call for proposals and testimonials were looked through and are now formed into four main chapters:1. Reflections, with contributions by Giovanna Borasi, Amica Dall, Marina Otero Verzier and Stojan Pelko, in a critical and political tone reflect on each year’s ideas submitted at the Calls for Ideas. Chapter 2. Charts give a visual representation of the vast data found in applied and selected ideas, while 3.Dossier takes the form of a statistical report that captures the sheer quantity, complexity and mathematically measurable success of the platform. The highlight of the book is the chapter 4. Collaborations. Here, the evolution from an Idea, through program to the outcome is presented, thus exposing mechanisms of collaboration, which resulted in the many events across Europe, be it an exhibition, publication, film, lecture series and more.

Résumé:
Sprawling beneath the Acropolis, modern Athens is commonly viewed in negative terms: congested, ugly and monotonous. A Mediterranean version of "informal" urbanism prevalent throughout the so-called developing world, ''Builders, Housewives and the Construction of Modern Athens'' reassesses the explosive growth of post-war Athens through its most distinctive building type, the polykatoikia, a small-scale multi-storey apartment block (from poly meaning "multiple" and oikos meaning "house"). Theocharopoulou re-evaluates the polykatoikia as a low-tech, easily constructible innovation that stimulated the post-war urban economy, triggering the city's social mid-twentieth century transformation, enabling the migrants who poured into Athens to become urban citizens, aspiring to a modern life. The interiors of the polykatoikia apartments reflect a desire for modernity as marketed to housewives through film and magazines. Regular builders became unlikely allies in designing these polykatoikia interiors, enabling inhabitants to exert agency over their daily lives ?and the shape of the post-war city.

A beloved cult classic of surrealism, pataphysics and Gurdjieffian mysticism, René Daumal’s ''Mount Analogue'' is the allegorical tale of an expedition to a mountain whose existence can only be deduced, not observed. As its numerous editions (most now rare) over the decades attest, the book has been highly influential: Alejandro Jodorowsky's visionary 1973 film ''The Holy Mountain'' is a loose adaptation of the book, and John Zorn based an eponymous album on it. Left unfinished after Daumal’s death from tuberculosis in 1944—in mid-sentence, as he broke from writing to receive a visitor—''Mount Analogue'' offers a compelling and philosophically resonant chronicle of a group of travelers seeking the titular mountain, based on the symbolic calculations of one Father Sogol (“Logos” spelled backward) and his students. As Daumal writes, “ 'Mount Analogue' is the symbolic mountain—the way that unites Heaven and Earth, a way which must exist in material and human form, otherwise our situation would be without hope.”

Résumé:
''Time, Forward!'' questions the notion and function of time and how it relates to the way we create and interact with art in the 21st century. Featuring newly commissioned works by an international group of artists, this book illuminates a broad range of responses to an exponentially accelerating world. This volume features a speculation on the future of the senses by Haroon Mirza, an unorthodox history of modernity by Walid Raad, and stills from a science fiction film by Rosa Barba. Essays from scholars, critics, poets, and filmmakers probe issues as diverse as the role of sleep in a 24/7 capitalist society and artistic privacy and appropriation in cyberspace. Some of these artists ask us to press the pause button, others take us back in time, and still others push us forward into the realm of science fiction--only to reveal these fictions to be a form of everyday present reality.
