Résumé:
The only residence built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in America, Farnsworth House (1948-51) exemplifies the central tenet both of the International Style, be inverting the conventions of traditional architecture, and of Mies' own design philosophy. Commissioned by Dr. Edith Farnsworth to build a weekend retreat, Mies designed the house as an envelope of glass and steel floating over the Illinois Fox River flood plain. Its spare interior was intended for a simpler, cleaner, and healthier lifestyle. Even before its completion, however, architect and client had fallen out over expenses and practical problems with the house, and by the time Lord Palumbo bought it in 1972, Farnsworth had changed many of the interior elements dictated so precisely by Mies. Following a ruinous flood in 1996, the house has been faithfully reconstructed to its original conception. Richly illustrated with detailed drawings and specially commissioned photography, this latest book in an award winning series provides an in depth account of this icon of twentieth century Modernist architecture.

Résumé:
Transformative Avant-Garde and Other Writings is a comprehensive collection of writings by the artist Krzysztof Wodiczko spanning from the 1970s to the present day. Known for his large-scale, politically charged video and slide projections onto prominent architectural structures, this publication explores the development of Wodiczko's political, theoretical and social motivations in relation to his practice. These writings encompass the artist's ongoing critique of public space and his argument for the integral role that art plays in challenging the institutionalised and national narratives inscribed in the architecture of urban environments, and therefore in the democratic process. Working with marginalised city residents since the 1980s as active, critical democratic agents, Wodizcko explores the political and psychological potential of "fearless" or parrhesiastic speaking in the reanimation of our public spaces and monuments.Krzysztof Wodiczko is Professor in Residence at Harvard University and was awarded the Hiroshima Prize in 1998 for his contribution as an artist to world peace.

Résumé:
French artist Paul Rousteau is known for his alchemic light and colour-bending approach to photography. Seascapes is a series made by Rousteau while artist-in-residence on a boat off the Coral Sea, in Australia. Inspired by the unending horizons around him, Rousteau retreated to the darkroom to invent mental topographies of his own, reducing the landscape down to the barest constituent elements – water, air and light. Often saturated, interrupted or out of focus, his photographs are series of playful experiments navigating between figuration and abstraction, painting and digital art. These constructed landscapes invite us to consider the point where human imagination interacts with the landscape - how fantasies of distance, displacement and faraway places are projected onto the horizon. Existing somewhere between vision, imagination and a surreal, submerged reality, Rousteau extends this fiction through globetrotting captions and an innovative design that invites readers to rip away and reappropriate the seascapes as their own.

Résumé:
Archaeology of the Digital delves into the genesis and establishment of digital tools for design conceptualization, visualization, and production at the end of the 1980s. How was the transition from analog practices to new digital tools managed, and the dialogue between them exploited? What was the cultural and technological landscape of that moment? These questions are at the foundation of this publication and its accompanying exhibition that unfold around four projects selected as seminal moments in the early development stages of digital architecture: Frank Gehry’s Lewis Residence (1989 –1995), Peter Eisenman’s Frankfurt Biozentrum (1987), Shoei Yoh’s design of the roof structure of Odawara Municipal Sports Complex and of Galaxy Toyama Gymnasium (1990 –1992) and Chuck Hoberman’s Expanding Sphere (1991) and Iris Dome (1994). Each project established a significant direction for architectural research by experimenting with the possibilities offered by novel digital tools. The dialogue between computer sciences, architecture and engineering is at the core of these experiments, which can be considered precursors of approaches still operative today.
