Résumé:
"Architecture and retrenchment" explores the "neoliberal turn" in architecture, through the rise and fall of the Swedish welfare state. There are few better case studies of architecture's role in the retrenchment and dismantling of the welfare state than Sweden, the birthplace of the world-famous "Swedish Model" and now home to Europe's fastest-growing inequality. Through eight in-depth architectural case studies, Helena Mattsson analyzes how neoliberalism has created conditions for a new built environment which was once closely integral to the welfare system, examining how new architectural strategies and techniques were developed in order to protect the agency of architecture in a newly re-organised society, and revealing the role of architecture in creating new types of segregation, discrimination, and social stratification.

Résumé:
Technology has become the architect of our intimacies. Online, we fall prey to the illusion of companionship, gathering thousands of Twitter and Facebook friends, and confusing tweets and wall posts with authentic communication. But this relentless connection leads to a new solitude. We turn to new technology to fill the void, but as MIT technology and society specialist Sherry Turkle argues, as technology ramps up, our emotional lives ramp down. Even the presence of sociable robots in our lives that pretend to demonstrate empathy makes us feel more isolated, as Turkle explains in a new introduction updating the book to the present day. ''Alone Together'' is the result of Turkle's nearly fifteen-year exploration of our lives on the digital terrain.

Résumé:
Working from her own lived experience in a New Mexico village and inspired by gravel pits in the landscape, author, curator, and activist Lucy R. Lippard weaves a number of fascinating themes—among them fracking, mining, land art, adobe buildings, ruins, Indian land rights, the Old West, tourism, photography, and water—into a tapestry that illuminates the relationship between culture and the land. From threatened Native American sacred sites to the history of uranium mining, she offers a skeptical examination of the 'subterranean economy.' ''Undermining'' is a must-read for anyone eager to explore a new way of understanding the relationship between art and place in a rapidly shifting society.

Résumé:
Following on from the success of the first edition, ''Smartcities + Eco-Warriors'' (2010), this book is the latest response on urban resilience from one of the world's leading urban design and architectural thinkers. An ecological symbiosis between nature, society and the built form, the Smartcity cultivates new spatial practices and creates diverse forms of resilient landscapes including and beyond urban agriculture. The notion of the Smartcity is developed through a series of international case studies, some commissioned by government organisations, others speculative and polemic. This second edition has nine new case studies, and additional ecological sustainability studies covering sensitivity, design criteria, and assessments for ecological construction plans.
