Some accuse him of cruelty, but many more appreciate the wit and irony with which he tackles such subjects as bad taste, food, the tourist, shopping and the foibles of the British. Parr has been collecting postcards for twenty years, and here is the cream of his collection – his boring postcards. With no introduction or commentary of any kind, Parr’s boring postcards are reproduced straight: they are exactly what they say they are, namely boring picture postcards showing boring photographs of boring places … presumably for boring people to buy to send to their boring friends. All of them are shot in Britain, taking us on a boring tour of its motorways, ring roads, traffic interchanges, bus stations, pedestrian precincts, factories, housing estates, airports, caravan sites, convalescent homes and shopping centres. Some attempt to idealize their subjects, only to fail dismally. Others lack any apparent purpose or interest … but the resultant collection of photographic images is wholly compelling. Boring Postcards is multi-layered: a commentary on British architecture, social life and identity, a record of a folk photography which is today being appropriated by the most fashionable photographers (including Parr), an exercise in sublime minimalism … and, above all, a richly comic photographic entertainment

The book describes the history of the construction of the original factory, on the other, its architectural restoration and transformation. Attention is paid to the history of the Van Nelle Company and its relation to the dynamic development of the harbour of Rotterdam. The inspirations and the life of director and patron Kees van der Leeuw are dealt with in some detail, and for the first time, the architecture, in which Van der Leeuw was involved, is positioned in a broader spiritual context. The design of the factory was not purely functional, but forms and colours seem to reflect a theosophical search for a higher level, which comes out, for one, in the analysis of the interiors. In addition to the illuminating descriptions of the construction process, shown in many contemporary photographs, the book examines the evolving social aspects of the time, the working conditions of the factory personnel and the well thought out logistics of the production process. The entire production process is reconstructed in a large fold-out drawing. The book also gives a great deal of consideration to influence of photography on the conceptualization of the complex and the questions that architectural historians have been posing for years. For example, the question of whether or not Mart Stam was the actual author of Van Nelle is answered in substantial detail. The problems of the modern day monument and the role of building conservation, the developer and the modern day architect are given considerable thought. In addition, the book describes the design of the old and new outdoor spaces in the complex.

Johansson’s Maine echoes the formal restraint of his earlier books, notably American Winter, Spanish Summer, Meloni Meloni and Pontiac, sequencing nearly 200 black-and-white duotones alphabetically by their oddly poetic Northeastern town names (Bath, Friendship, Purgatory, etc). Somehow, none of the Maine pictures draws more attention than any other, and the flawless and playful compositions never seem to repeat. As in all of Johansson’s work, endlessly inventive arrangements of architecture and landscape orient the viewer in a specific geographic and cultural place while generously sharing his way of seeing, walking and thinking with a camera.
