Mobilisant données statistiques, enquêtes de terrain et témoignages vécus, ce livre montre qu’en nourrissant un vaste mouvement de périurbanisation des classes populaires, la diffusion de la propriété transforme en profondeur leurs conditions d’existence : déstabilisation de l’économie domestique par le poids de l’endettement, éloignement des bassins d’emploi et des réseaux de solidarité, repli des femmes sur la sphère domestique, « mixité » sociale conflictuelle… Entre la maison individuelle rêvée et le logement standardisé souvent exigu et inachevé que ces « primo-acquérants » ont pu se payer, entre le quartier pavillonnaire imaginé sur papier glacé et le lotissement sous-doté en équipements collectifs et coupé du monde auquel ses habitants se trouvent assignés, ce nouveau monde de « HLM à plat » est gros de tensions dont Anne Lambert souligne l’importance politique pour les années à venir.
