To create the iconic headquarters of the UN in New York City, these architects experimented with room layouts, media technologies, and design in tribunal courtrooms, assembly halls, and council chambers. The result was the creation of a new type of public space, the global interior. "Assembly by design" shows how this space leveraged media to help the UN communicate with the world. With its media infrastructure, symbols, acoustic design, and architecture, the global interior defined political assembly both inside and outside the UN headquarters, serving as the architectural medium to organize multilateral encounters of international publics around the globe. Demonstrating how aesthetics have long held sway over political work, Olga Touloumi posits that the building framed diplomacy on the ground amid a changing political landscape that brought the United States to the forefront of international politics, destabilizing old and establishing new geopolitical alliances.

Bramante, Tamburelli argues, offers an excellent starting point to imagine a contemporary theory of space, to reflect on the relationship between architecture and politics, and to look back—with neither nostalgia nor contempt—at the tradition of Western classicism. Starting from a discussion of the difference in the work of Bramante in Milan (1481–1499) and Rome (1499–1514), Tamburelli highlights the peculiarities of Bramante’s architecture, especially in comparison to that of his predecessor Leon Battista Alberti and successor Andrea Palladio. This in turn opens up new possibilities for appreciating his spatial experiments, and to derive from Bramante’s abstraction and disassociation of form from function a revised theory of space for contemporary architecture. Such a theory might even advance a newfound political understanding of classicism, and a model—perhaps more valid now than ever before—for a public architecture.

Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli designed two important public buildings in the ancient city center of Bressanone, South Tyrol. Just over five hundred meters apart, the two works, the Music School, and the Public Library allowed for reasoning about the city's architecture, exercising a method made up of ideas that look at the peculiarities of places. In a historical period in which the image—by virtue of its visual impact even before its meaning—has taken on the role of the main channel of communication, the Luogo Comune ("common place")—understood both as a meeting space and as the lowest common denominator of an "essential language"—might provide the interval of reflection necessary to start asking some simple, elementary questions about what surrounds us. Within this publishing project, the authors talk about the passage of time, the concept of place and method through the anthropological approach underpinning the photographs taken by Armin Linke in several site visits made in the cities of Treviso, Brixen and Munich, between 2020 and 2021.

This publication is part of the Occupy Mars project conducted by Pauline Julier and Clément Postec, which sees Mars as a mirror of Earth at the dawn of the new age of space exploration, extractivism, and colonialism. Through a series of films, publications, and public discussions, it bridges multiple alternative perspectives that question both past and future to bring new narratives to the fore and give insurgent voices a platform. A first exploration took place in the Atacama Desert in Chile, where the training sites for NASA's rovers are located next to one of the largest lithium mines in the world. Published on the occasion of Julier’s exhibition near the Mauvoisin Dam in Switzerland.
