The city''s public life was marked by a series of labour conflicts and bloody sectarian riots; at the same time, the ways that elites wielded power and ordinary people engaged in the political process were changing, particularly in public space. In Taking to the Streets Dan Horner examines how the urban environment became a vital and contentious political site during the tumultuous period from the end of the 1837-38 rebellions to the burning of Parliament in 1849. Employing a close reading of newspaper and judicial archives, he looks at a broad range of collective crowd experiences, including riots, labour demonstrations, religious processions, and parades. By examining how crowd events were used both to assert claims of political authority and to challenge their legitimacy, Horner charts the development of a contentious democratic political culture in British North America. Taking to the Streets is an important contribution to the political and urban history of pre-Confederation Canada and a timely reminder of how Montrealers from all walks of life have always used the streets to build community and make their voices heard.

Photography is arguably the most democratic of mediums, even more accessible today across culture and class than language. In some regards, this has been Lee Friedlander’s most enduring subject—the way that average citizens interact with the world by making pictures of it, as well as how those pictures and the pictures constructed for advertising or political purposes define the public space. In ''Lee Friedlander: The people’s pictures'' we see photographs spanning six decades, most of the geographic United States and parts of Western Europe and Asia. These pictures are uniquely Friedlander photographs: as much about what’s in front of the camera as they are about the photographer’s lifelong redefining of the medium. Kiosk, Christoph Keller's famous art publications archive, has been exhibited at 27 institutions and biennials internationally since 2001, including the ICA (London), the Witte de With (Rotterdam), Artists' Space (NY), the Emily Carr Institute (Vancouver), MUDAM (Luxembourg) and biennials such as Manifesta 4, the 25th Graphic Biennial of Ljubljana and the Istanbul Biennial. To date, it contains more than 7,000 publications by approximately 500 independent art publishing projects, from magazines, fanzines, newspapers, journals, audio and video labels to institutional publishing, covering the entire bandwidth of publishing possibilities. On the occasion of the archive's final public presentation at the Kunstbibliothek, Berlin, this overview on independent art publishing activities today surveys the Kiosk project. This catalogue contains documentary illustrations and provides information on the contributing publishing projects.
