Résumé:
The works of Iranian-born, Swiss-based artist Shirana Shahbazi (born 1974) reflects her ongoing interest in the relationship between images and their surfaces, as well as the relationship between various artistic media and their iconic qualities. The artist's book Monstera presents Shahbazi's recent abstract work, which features richly hued colors, objects and geometric forms. For these photographs, Shahbazi arranged real forms and bodies in her studio as if staging a still life and then photographed them from different vantage points. The light and color effects of the images suggest the kind of decorative abstraction—so easily produced digitally—that appears in screensavers and desktop wallpapers, but these are digital effects achieved through laborious analogue means.

Water and air. So very commonplace are these substances, they hardly attract attentionand yet they vouchsafe our very existence. The beginnings of life are shrouded in myth: Let there water and air. Living phenomena spontaneously generated from water and air in the presence of light, though that could just as easily suggest random coincidence as a Deity. Let's just say that there happened to be a planet with water and air in our solar system, and moreover at precisely the right distance from the sun for the temperatures required to coax forth life. While hardly inconceivable that at least one such planet should exist in the vast reaches of universe, we search in vain for another similar example.

Résumé:
Born in Estonia in 1901, Louis Isidore Kahn was to become one of the United States’ most important architects of the post-war period, alongside the Modern masters Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier. Although renowned for a number of seminal modern works, he came to question many of the precepts of the Modern Movement. In particular, he questioned the ability of the International Style of Modernism to house the social spaces required by the latter half of the century. In 1947 Kahn was appointed Professor at Yale University. He was to continue teaching throughout his architectural career, influencing a younger generation of architects along the way. His teaching enabled him to further develop his own concepts and to inform his ever-evolving definition of design. He was drawn to investigate monumentality in architecture, creating buildings out of heavy, solid materials and forms and incorporating vivid plays of light, in complete contrast to the lightweight glass and steel structures being created elsewhere by his peers. This monumentality was also imbued with his concern for the ritual of human experience. His career, although extending to just over twenty years, was a rich and varied one, where he continually readdressed the issues of light, mass, structure, monumentality, geometry and materials. This monograph follows a predominantly chronological order, identifying major themes and examining key works according to these themes. A comprehensive list of projects by Kahn spanning his lifetime and drawn from the Louis I Kahn Collection at the University of Pennsylvania Archives is also included, listing over 231 projects, of which at least 30 were previously unattributed.

Résumé:
Anticipation occurs in al spheres of life. It complements the physics of reaction with the pro-active quality of the living. Sometimes we humans are aware of anticipation, as we plan. Often, we are not aware of it, as when processes embedded in our body and mind take place before we realize their finality. In tennis, for example, the return of a professional serve can be successful only trough anticipatory mechanisms. Anticipation is the engine driving the stock market. Creativity in art and design are fired by anticipation. This publication casts light above all design problems relating to anticipatory processes. The editor, Prof. Mihai Nadin, teaches computational design in Wuppertal, and has been working on anticipation and its associated themes for many years. Design: Uwe Loesch.

Traces of rain, seep into the city's surfaces, gently transforming tones of yellow, grey and brown. Throughout the pages of "Obscura," the newest publication of Yoko Ikeda, we rediscover the renowned Japanese photographer’s unrivalled talent for unearthing and sublimating the treasures of her everyday urban environment, offering in exquisite detail the richness of humble subjects. Through her lens, Ikeda sees the marvels that are hidden all around her. And with tight framing and precise intuition, they become precious fragments of color and texture responding to each other in a delicate play of correspondences.

Taking Genoa and Berlin as typological examples, a toal of 22 individual house plans were drawn up in the context of an experiment in design ; each represents a fresh, creative planning possibility in view of the current redensification of urban space. The publication documents the assignments and results of a European project carried out among students of architecture in Postdam and Genoa under the overall diection of Klaus Theo Brenner. Résumé:
In modern masonry work it is customary to use large size blocks in building. They fulfil all the construction requirements even in single layer outside walls. This book of practical examples based on sound knowledge, takes a keen look at the current state of building with large clay blocks and reduces the information to the essentials. Using two houses as examples, all details are presented clearly and comprehensively in a scale of 1:10. The authors throw light on critical points, showing where care should be given to achieve convincing sustainable results. This book is a standard text book for single leaf walls built with large clay blocks, and shows section drawings and explanatory notes reveal the inner workings of the construction itself.

Résumé:
"Taste is the lack of appetite" is an exhibition on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of GRAFT and celebrates the curiosity for the special, the unique, and the unexpected. The internationally active architecture firm is known not only for individual forms and design, but also for its social engagement. For the team, the design practice is defined by optimism and a pleasure in experimentation – leading to the realisation of hybrid solutions for a wide range of challenges. The exhibition features a selection of residential, mixed-use and cultural buildings, each of which reflects the firm’s exemplary design strategies. In line with its multifaceted work, the show also sheds light on the topic of Architecture Activism and presents the original prototype of the community-building Solarkiosk.
