Today, the elegant house in Roquebrune-Cap-Mar-tin in southern France is an icon of modernism. In 1937, Le Corbusier discovered the place and the "Maison en Bord de Mer". Inspired by the genius of the place and the light on the Côte d'Azur, he created a total of eight large-format wall paintings there in 1938 and 1939 onwards, some of which complement the building congenially, while others set counterpoints. In 1952, he built his Cabanon nearby and decorated it with murals as well. The book by the well-known architectural historian Tim Benton documents Le Corbusier's artwork at this special place, explores its controversies, and places it in his overall oeuvre.

The German artist Katharina Grosse has fulfilled her dream of a tailor-made studio, a place large enough to accommodate her large-scale works and where an industrial atmosphere is combined with with soft light and neutral walls. In close cooperation with the artist, the firm Augustin und Frank Architekten planned the studio in Berlin’s Mitte neighborhood and completed it in 2007. The result is a compact reinforced concrete cube containing workrooms, storerooms, an archive, offices and living space. The contributors to this publication use Grosse’s studio as a springboard to explore the relationship between painting and architecture, and the role that studios play in the production of art. Numerous photographs show the raw architecture of the new building and the artist’s appropriation of the space. With contributions by Georg Augustin, Laura Bieger, Andreas Denk, Ulrich Loock and Philip Ursprung.

Hans Jacobi, keeper of the Koninklijke Penningen Kabinet (Royal Coins Cabinet) in Leiden, throws light on the vicissitudes of Dutch coin design during the last twenty years. In an epilogue, Janwillem Schrofer, a member of the Advisory Commission for New Coinage and the president of the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, presents his outlook on the importance of good coin design.

Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station is located in Nottinghamshire, England. Michael Kenna first began photographing the power station in the early 1980s, and over the past several years he has visited the site many times, producing a body of work as ominous as it is beautiful. The Ratcliffe photographs take on the tonal quality of a partially lit ecosphere unique to the photographer and his subject.
