Résumé:
The Seagram building rises over New York’s Park Avenue, seeming to float above the street with perfect lines of bronze and glass. Considered one of the greatest icons of twentieth-century architecture, the building was commissioned by Samuel Bronfman, founder of the Canadian distillery dynasty Seagram. Bronfman’s daughter Phyllis Lambert was twenty-seven years old when she took over the search for an architect and chose Mies van der Rohe, a pioneering modern master of what he termed “skin and bones” architecture. Mies, who designed the elegant, deceptively simple thirty-eight-story tower along with Philip Johnson, emphasized the beauty of structure and fine materials, and set the building back from the avenue, creating an urban oasis with the building’s plaza. Through her choice, Lambert established her role as a leading architectural patron and singlehandedly changed the face of American urban architecture.

Résumé:
This book follows the evolution of Millau Viaduct in southern France from first sketches through to completion, as designed and executed by Foster + Partners, with engineer Michel Virlogeux. Spanning the spectacular gorge of the River Tarn in Southern France, the Millau Viaduct provides a critical link in the A75 autoroute between Clermont-Ferrand and Beziers. Commissioned by the French state, the 2.46 km-long viaduct resolves numerous structural and design challenges in an elegant cable-stayed form. Utilising optimised, repetitive spans with piers taller than the Eiffel Tower at their zenith, the bridge is structurally and visually elegant. Not only does it exemplify technical excellence, the Millau Viaduct illustrates the powerful impact that architecture of infrastructure can have on the environment. This monograph will appeal to those interested in architecture and design; equally, it illustrates a significant engineering feat.

Résumé:
Addressing East Asia’s rapid urban transformation, The Vertical Village looks at radical alternatives to the familiar standardized block architecture that has eradicated low-rise, “lighter” varieties of architecture, such as the Hutong in Beijing, Tokyo’s wooden house and the villages of Singapore. These “urban villages” have fostered a connected community living instead of isolating citizens in tower blocks. This volume, the latest publication from The Why Factory, attempts to reconcile the two models, proposing a contemporary “vertical village” that restores neighborhood life to East Asian--and perhaps western--civic centers. It features innovative designs for high-rise structures, detailed case studies for Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Djakarta, Seoul and Bangkok, plus interviews with Winy Maas, Alfredo Brillemburg, Hubert Klumpner, Lieven De Cauter, Peter Trummer and families living in Taipei (where the originating Why Factory exhibition was held).

Robin Hood Gardens in Tower Hamlets, East London, was designed by Alison + Peter Smithson and completed in 1972. In 2008, this large social housing scheme was threatened with demolition and became a controversial conservation case. The government refused to give it protection as a historic building despite widespread public support for its retention. This book uncovers the history of the project, arguing for its historical and architectural significance and for its future role in local housing provision. It includes support from architects Richard Rogers and Zaha Hadid, with previously unpublished text and pictures by Alison + Peter Smithson and photographs by Sandra Lousada and Ioana Marinescu. Résumé:
Vladimir Tatlin’s Monument for the III. International (1919) is certainly one of the most significant projects of Soviet Constructivism. It is, however, not at all certain whether “Tatlin’s Tower” could even be built at all at the time it was originally planned. And whether it would be constructed today with the presently available means and possibilities of planning, calculating and processing materials is equally uncertain. The seminar on Structural Design 3 (Prof. Klaus Bollinger) focused on these reflections at the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The preliminary answers and assumptions are summed up in the present volume. Complementing the works by students, texts by Klaus Bollinger, Frank Werner, Florian Medicus, Gabriele Werner, Georg Glaeser and Frank Gruber provide an overview of the theoretical, historical, constructive and geometric relevance of Vladimir Tatlin’s work and the architect’s intentions.

Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima of Atelier Bow-Wow have built a career confronting the challenges posed by dense urban environments. Their city houses—enclosed in vibrant, idiosyncratic forms—are distinguished by their capacity to accommodate the changing needs of the occupants. A basic feature is the permeability of interior spaces, where public and the more intimate places co-mingle, often in vertical structures with a total floor area that rarely exceeds 200 square meters. Atelier Bow-Wow has a dedicated research division that has published a number of treatises on vernacular architecture. This book will feature their newest research, including plans, as well as explorations on mobile or portable projects. The book includes key projects such as the Mini House, The Sway House, the Juicy House, House and Atelier Bow-Wow, the House Tower, and the Aco House.

Résumé:
This second volume of Hatje Cantz’s Josef Paul Kleihues catalogue raisonné encompasses the most active years of this prominent German architect’s career, from 1981 to 1995. Kleihues (1933–2004) was the head of the highly respected Internationale Bauausstellung (International Architectural Show, IBA) in Berlin from 1979 to 1987; following German reunification, he was arguably the most influential architect in the re-envisioning of the capital, and his concept of “critical reconstruction” influenced an entire generation of architects. Among his many buildings of note are the Regent Hotel (formerly the Four Seasons Hotel) at the Gendarmenmarkt, and his tower, the Kantdreieck, with its famous “shark fin” on the roof. Kleihues has received international recognition for his museum buildings in particular, such as the redesigned Deichtorhalle, the Hamburger Bahnhof and the new building of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

Bringing together contributions from noted commentators alongside essays and observations by Norman Foster and his colleagues, this overview reveals the key characteristics of Foster's design philosophy, showing how a commitment to social and environmental concerns.

Résumé:
In France no less than in Britain, the late 1960s saw a rebellion against the relentless anonymity of modernist planning. In the search for alternatives, Jean Renaudie showed an originality and a daring unrivalled up to this day. Conceived along structuralist principles, informed by research in molecular biology, his urban projects overturned the logic of the vast housing estates that were being steamrolled across France by the State. In the place of uniform tower blocks, he designed developments in which every dwelling was unique. Diversity – the spanner in the works of mass production – was for him a moral obligation. No concession was made in the name of type, be it human or architectural. ‘The catalogue of forms is endless: until every shape has found its city, new cities will continue to be born. When the forms exhaust their variety and come apart, the end of cities begins.’ Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities
