Later, in 1968, How to Make a Happening was distributed on a limited basis through Something Else Press—A laminated and silk-screened cover by Alison Knowles distinguished this edition from its predecessor. Simple in construction, yet profound in context, How to Make a Happening is Allan Kaprow delivering 11 rules on how, and how not, to make a Happening, a movement begun by Kaprow in the late fifties that is known for its unpredictability, open scores, and constantly-evolving form.

Résumé:
These essays show Angela McRobbie reflecting on a range of issues which have political consequence for women, particularly young women, in a context where it is frequently assumed that progress has been made in the last 30 years, and that with gender issues now 'mainstreamed' in cultural and social life, the moment of feminism per se is now passed. McRobbie trenchantly argues that it is precisely on these grounds that invidious forms of gender -re-stabilisation are able to be re-established. Consumer culture, she argues, encroaches on the terrain of so called female freedom, appears supportive of female success only to tie women into new post-feminist neurotic dependencies.

Résumé:
Over the last decade, the look of the Estonian capital has been radically transformed. Part of this change is due to the emergence of new urban areas and a complete shift in perspective on historic neighbourhoods. Rather than focusing only on new buildings or competitively rating their aesthetic worth, this architecture guide selects works based on sustainability and technological modernism. Attention is paid to new buildings that adapt to the historical and environmental context, while typical and representative buildings are also pointed out in a broad cross-section of Estonian architectural culture. For this reason, examples of Stalinist and later Soviet architecture also appear.

Résumé:
"Accidental gravity" moves from upstate New York to the contemporary western U.S. and into Canada, from urban and suburban places to wild lands. The essays are informative, but the focus is personal. Quetchenbach writes about urban and suburban places as well as wild lands. In the first section of the book, he focuses on suburban neighborhoods, “the places where tensions between human and animal nature, and between differing concepts of the natural world, come to the fore.” In the second section, he juxtaposes these humanized places with Yellowstone National Park, in the context of climate change and other contemporary pressures. This is nature writing at its finest.

The SOLID Harvard GSD series gathers material from the four Symposia on Architecture held at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design from 2014 to 2016, entitled ‘All that is Solid’. This issue, the third and final part of the series, offers a close reading of the interior in the context of contemporary architecture. It contains recent projects and relevant voices in support of the importance of the interior and the intimate material knowledge architects must demonstrate. With contributions from Richard Sennett, Kiel Moe, Salmaan Craig, and Iñaki Ábalos, it not only reflects the current complexity and the challenges faced by the discipline, but also traces future paths to explore.

Résumé:
From 1970–1990, architecture experienced a revision as part of the post-modern movement. The critical attitude to the functionalistic Moderne style and the influence of semiotics and philosophical trends, such as phenomenology, on architectural theory led to an increased interest in its history, expression, perception, and context. In addition, architectural heritage and the care of architectural monuments gained importance. This development also increasingly challenged the ideologically based division between East and West. Instead of emphasizing the differences, the search was for a joint cultural heritage. The contributions in this volume question terms such as "Moderne" and "post-modern", and show how architecture could again represent local, regional, and national identity.

As a contribution towards a vibrant, historic city center, the palaces will not be sold in the context of speculative development but will be let for residential and work purposes. The book recounts the history of the palaces using photographic documentation to illustrate the connection between trust funds, architecture, and artistic interpretation as a cultural statement.

Résumé:
They come in all shapes and sizes, and somehow the phenomenon is especially prevalent in Switzerland: homemade cat ladders. Taking the city of Berne as an example, photographer Brigitte Schuster shows the variety of ways humans facilitate the comings and goings of their feline friends in the context of the surrounding architecture. From a simple wooden plank to complex, scaffold-like constructions rising up to four storeys in a zigzag fashion, they express sociological, architectural, and aesthetic peculiarities, which are further developed in accompanying texts. As such, the book serves as both a guideline and source of inspiration in creating your own cat ladders.

Résumé:
Vector Architects, founded by Gong Dong (Beijing, 1972) has become one of the key architectural offices in China. Their work is distinguished by its careful attention to context, a deep respect for landscape and the natural environment, the contemporary reinterpretation of Chinese building traditions, and the conscientious use of natural light as a project tool. With these ingredients the studio envisions and designs intimate and emotional spaces, as those that can be found in the sixteen projects, all of them in China, featured in this monograph. The list includes works like the Alila Yangshuo Hotel, the Seashore Library and Chapel, the Captain’s House, and the Changjiang Art Museum.
