AR1996:1001:231
Description:
- The inscribed titles on two drawings by Théophile Fahrland indicate that the subjects are a "tambour" [drum] (AR1996:1001:232) and details for a "tambour" (AR1996:1001:231) for Notre-Dame de Montréal. The subject of these drawings is identified as a "bearing wall [?]", since the definition of a "drum" - a vertical wall, either circular or polygonal in plan, that carries a dome - apparently does not apply in this case (Art and Architecture Thesaurus). Further research is required to determine the subject of these drawings more precisely.

Description:
- These plans and rendering show a chalet-style house with middle- and far-eastern influences, including ogee horseshoe arches and an onion dome. Although the inscribed scale mentions an "elevation", the draughtsman was probably referring to the pictorial drawing at the top of the sheet above the three plans. This rendering includes several groups of figures in middle eastern costume in the foreground, some of whom are riding animals -- horses, a camel, and an elephant. The background, includes two walled structures with minaret-like spires.

Description:
- This watercolour rendering depicts a welcome arch composed of a large central barrel vaulted archway which spans the street, with a lower parallel barrel vaulted archway over the sidewalks at each side. The arch is embellished with Gothic-inspired features such as blind tracery and pointed arches as well as shields, including two inscribed with the letter "L", flags, floral garlands, the British royal coat of arms, and possibly lights. Staffage indicates the large scale of the arch.

Description:
- Photograph PH1984:0038:023 is apparently taken from the intersection of State and Adams Streets based on the imprinted title. Further research is required to determine if this photograph is in fact taken from the intersection and from which direction the photograph was taken, as well as to identify the domed building at the center left of the photograph. If photographer was looking east along Adams Street, the Chicago Art Institute would be located at the center left of the photograph, however, the Institute never had a dome. Research has revealed no building which would "block" Adams Street looking west and/or State Street looking north or south (Schulze and Harrington).
