Résumé:
From building blocks to city blocks, an eye-opening exploration of how children's playthings and physical surroundings affect their development. What do youngsters lose when seesaws are deemed too dangerous and slides are designed primarily for safety? How can the built environment help children cultivate self-reliance? Alexandra Lange reveals the surprising histories behind the human-made elements of our children's pint-size landscape. Her fascinating investigation shows how the seemingly innocuous universe of stuff affects kids' behavior, values, and health, often in subtle ways. And she reveals how years of decisions by toymakers, architects, and urban planners have helped--and hindered--American youngsters' journeys toward independence. Seen through Lange's eyes, everything from the sandbox to the street becomes vibrant with buried meaning.

In ''Urbanism Without Effort,'' Chuck Wolfe argues that 'unplanned' places can often teach us more about great placemaking than planned ones. From impromptu movie nights in a Seattle alley to the adapted reuse of Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia, Wolfe searches for the 'first principles' of what makes humans feel happy and safe amid the hustle and bustle of urban life. He highlights the common elements of cities around the world that spontaneously bring people together: being inherently walkable, factors that contribute to safety at night, the importance of intersections and corners, and more. In this age of skyrocketing metropolitan growth, he argues, looking to the past might be our best approach to creating the urban future we dream about.

Surveillance cameras ensure our safety, antennae and sensors track the speed of our cars, while electronic gates decide who is to be granted access to an increasing number of delimited zones. The book charts this international trend, using case studies in Shanghai, Tokyo, London and Rio de Janeiro, as well as cities in the Netherlands. What are the consequences of an ultra-monitored society? When does the technology aid us and when does it restrict us? Who wields control over the technology? And who sits behind the contraptions that are tracking us? Expert authors tackle these questions and make recommendations for the future. Incorporating digital media into the book's design, tags make it possible to download supplementary information and videos via an Internet-capable mobile device.

Who would have thought that a simple cone-shaped marker could have such a rich and mysterious history? These seemingly ordinary objects, known by various names such as road cones, safety cones, or construction cones, hold secrets waiting to be unravelled. From ancient civilisations to modern-day innovations, with a mix of history, curiosity, and a touch of surrealism, this book takes you on a journey that blurs the lines between reality and imagination. Halfway between an art project and a visual essay, SerraGlia aims to encourage us to remain vigilant to our surroundings: how can we critically observe and evaluate what we encounter every day? The book includes also an original essay by Dr. Everett Konemann, PhD, Professor of Traffic Studies and Human Behavior at Coney Island University.

With "Bloom", Thomas Flechtner continues to go his own way as an artist. In his internationally acclaimed debut publication "Snow", he took viewers by surprise with a compelling visual metaphysics of snow as the exploration of a psychological state. After exhibitions in London, New York, Bilbao, and Tokyo, Flechtner is now free to pursue a new passion, the unbridled color and movement of organic nature, which he examines with lyrical lightness and tremendous precision in these densely atmospheric studies of plants. As a photographer, Flechtner goes in search of the essence of nature, abandoning the ostensible safety of distance and allowing proximity and for the first time also movement. In "Bloom", the viewer is invited to take in a feast of light and color and to enter a space beyond nature’s supposed laws.

Résumé:
This volume follows the long-anticipated restoration work on the Procuratie Vecchie in St Mark’s Square in Venice, as overseen by David Chipperfield Architects. Thousands of people walk past the landmark each year, oblivious to what resides within. In April 2022, the building opened for the first time in 500 years, housing humanitarian organizations such as the Human Safety Net foundation. St Mark’s Square is often regarded as Venice’s central community complex; Venice, in turn, is often regarded across the globe as an architectural mecca. Accordingly, the major restoration has drawn a number of critical reflections by both Italian and international thinkers. ''Venice Lab'' gathers these essays from scholars and artists, as well as interviews with the architects involved in the restoration, conveying the project’s pluralistic vision for the lagoon city.

Having studied how people in marginal societies deal with the state, Yale political scientist and anthropologist Scott (The Art of Not Being Governed) found himself drawn to a study of anarchism. his brief, six-part study is the result. Having concluded that revolution too often leads to such repressive regimes as France's Committee of Public Safety or the Soviet state, Scott began to examine leaderless mass efforts disorganized strivings towards social improvement. Scott recognizes that anarchism is not a panacea and that there are problems that only government can treat. Nevertheless, he expresses a strong dislike for centralized governance and a preference for expanding chaos. He refers to his sections as "fragments," highlighting the book's key shortcoming: every chapter seems rushed and incomplete, as though Scott were hurrying to get his thoughts down on paper before they vanished.

Résumé:
Developed by Amsterdam-based Slovenian artist and researcher Andrea Knezovic (born 1990) in collaboration with editor-curator Agata Bar, curator Tia Cicek and graphic designer Miquel Hervás Gómez, ''Nocturnalities: Bargaining Beyond Rest'' looks at how technology can assist, instead of coopting, care urgencies and needs. What is rest if not the space of safety? How can we use or appropriate care methodologies in capitalism and create little oases of comfort, exchange and "communal comradeship"? The value of this work is embedded in the way it offers different—local and international—perspectives and understandings of how we relate to the politics of rest, negotiate institutional and intimate care, and imagine varieties of care systems and healing strategies within a local setting. The intent is not necessarily to offer one solution to the larger inquiry but to allow a plurality of voices and contributions to be heard, expressed and remembered.

''Ukrainian railroad ladies'' is a series of portraits of traffic controllers and safety officers at railroads of Ukraine. This project is also an exploration of why these professions still exist in the 21st century, given the almost entire automatization of railroad crossings in the country. It is a study of the anthropological and social aspects of this phenomenon and the overall role of Ukraine’s railroad system. While working on the project, Sasha Maslov – known for his social documentary portraits, where the main focus is always the hero in his substantive environment – has traveled all over Ukraine. ''Ukrainian railroad ladies'' is more than 50 photos of women who work on Ukrainian Railways. They seem to be a symbol of certain things in the country that don’t change, standing firm in the present as a defiant nod to the past. Unfazed by the passing of trains and time, they are here to stay.

Résumé:
For millennia, disused buildings have been cannibalized for the construction of new ones. Yet, in today’s world, what is known as circular architecture raises a multitude of questions and challenges with regard to technology, safety, energy, and associated legal aspects. This book is a unique compendium of circular architecture. Richly illustrated, it explores comprehensively through essays and illuminating conversations between experts all the questions and challenges that architects and engineers face with circular architecture designs. It is based on the case study of the K.118 project in Winterthur, Switzerland’s largest building to date that consists mainly of re-used parts. Since its outset in 2018, the K.118 project has been evaluated within the framework of an interdisciplinary research with regard to aspects of design and engineering, energy, economy, processes, and legal issues. This volume presents the results in striking visuals and concise texts.
