Résumé:
Some Ideas on Living in London and Tokyo presents architectural projects by Stephen Taylor and Ryue Nishizawa that reflect new thinking on living in contemporary cities. Taylor and Nishizawa’s residential projects both respect and respond to the particular cultural environments of London and Tokyo, and demonstrate the importance of a clear understanding of place in order to develop solutions that are specific to their context. Their designs challenge conventional norms and offer approaches that simultaneously shape the life of the resident and the face of the city. The book accompanies the 2008 exhibition of the same name and features evocative images of the architects’ respective installations in the CCA galleries.

Résumé:
Situation—a unique set of conditions produced in both space and time and ranging across material, social, political, and economic relations—has become a key concept in twenty-first-century art. Rooted in artistic practices of the 1960s and 1970s, the idea of situation has evolved and transcended these in the current context of globalization. This anthology offers key writings on areas of art practice and theory related to situation, including notions of the site specific, the artist as ethnographer or fieldworker, the relation between action and public space, the meaning of place and locality, and the crucial role of the curator in recent situation specific art.

Résumé:
The debate surrounding hand drawing versus computer-generated imagery has become a hot topic. Having grown up with computers, today's interior design and architecture students are extremely adept at creating computer imagery, but often lack confidence in their freehand sketching skills, or do not know how to sketch at all. Sketching, and the careful observation that it entails, is essential for the successful development of the next generation of designers. Forty-five step-by-step exercises take the student from the simple three-dimensional forms of furniture, to interiors, to complex building exteriors and cityscapes. Technical topics covered include tools, line weights, perspective, proportion, composition, shading, serial views, and context.

Résumé:
Robert Smithson (1938–1973) produced his best-known work during the 1960s and early 1970s, a period in which the boundaries of the art world and the objectives of art-making were questioned perhaps more consistently and thoroughly than any time before or since. In "Robert Smithson", Ann Reynolds elucidates the complexity of Smithson’s work and thought by placing them in their historical context, a context greatly enhanced by the vast archival materials that Smithson’s widow, Nancy Holt, donated to the Archives of American Art in 1987. The archive provides Reynolds with the remnants of Smithson’s working life--magazines, postcards from other artists, notebooks, and perhaps most important, his library--from which she reconstructs the physical and conceptual world that Smithson inhabited. Reynolds explores the relation of Smithson’s art-making, thinking about art-making, writing, and interaction with other artists to the articulated ideology and discreet assumptions that determined the parameters of artistic practice of the time. A central focus of Reynolds’s analysis is Smithson’s fascination with the blind spots at the center of established ways of seeing and thinking about culture. For Smithson, New Jersey was such a blind spot, and he returned there again and again, alone and with fellow artists, to make art that, through its location alone, undermined assumptions about what and, more important, where, art should be. For those who guarded the integrity of the established art world, New Jersey was "elsewhere"; but for Smithson, "elsewheres" were the defining, if often forgotten, locations on the map of contemporary culture.

The focus of this study is a comparative analysis of the use of desks. Desks in insurance companies, banks, administrative authorities, call centers, and design studios in twelve countries on all continents were studied. This publication presents the results in the form of extensive visual material, empirical analyses, and critical essays. The study was carried out by the Koln International School of Design (KISD) in collaboration with universities in Hong Kong; New York; Seoul; Taipei; Curitiba, Brazil; Pune, India; Auckland; Milan; and Fukuoka, Japan.

Résumé:
Founded in 2008, the French-Lebanese firm of Youssef Tohme Architects and Associates has a delicate signature that takes the regional context as its starting point in developing an individual architectural language. By using a wide variety of materials that interact with the built environment, they create buildings that evolve over time alongside their inhabitants. The book documents twelve of the firm’s projects – from a single-family home to a museum, including urban interventions in Beirut, Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, and Bucharest. The book also includes an essay that takes a comprehensive look at the working methods of this firm, focusing in particular on the dimension of time and the changes that occur as the buildings are used.
