Résumé:
Through the pages of "Sunshine Terrace", it is a strange, askew domesticity that first strikes us. It is the red eyes of a garage gate, a crooked tree growing over patchwork gravel beds, abandoned shopping carts, a strange triangular decoration, like a semblance of an imaginary map that one cannot read. These are the signs to be deciphered of a deliberately emptied residential area, whose human presence remains elusive, but whose inevitable markers we recognize: the stucco and asphalt surfaces, the chain-link fences and bodywork, the bursts of greenery, too. Turning her lens towards her own neighborhood, perched between the expanses of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, Emily Shur adopts the figure of the walking photographer, focusing her gaze on this familiar place in which she precisely frames surfaces, colors and light in a true compositional pleasure, where forms respond to each other with a discreet humor.

Résumé:
Novartis Campus at Basel will be characterized by far-reaching visions of urban space and architecture. The first new building on the Campus – "Forum 3" by Diener, Federle, Wiederin – was finished in 2005, followed by "Fabrikstrasse 6" of Peter Märkli. The third building – "Fabrikstrasse 4" by SANAA – was opened in autumn 2006. The two partners who lead SANAA, Ryue Nishizawa and Kazuyo Sejima, have designed a building that disregards all the rules of historical architecture: a rack, without a façade, with no hierarchy in its structure, and not responding in any way to the maxim of the pre-modern city. Essentially there are two materials: a light-coloured structure in in-situ concrete clad with glass. This publication presents works by Walter Niedermayr as well as numerous plans. With an introduction Ulrike by Jehle-Schulte Strathaus, texts by Aaron Betsky, Valerio Olgiati and Moritz Küng. Inventory by SANAA.

Résumé:
The work of MVRDV can be considered an emblematic turning point in Dutch architecture. Early projects such as the Light Urbanism study for the Municipality of Rotterdam, the headquarters for Public Broadcasting Company VPRO and housing for elderly Wozoco's in Amsterdam brought MVRDV to the attention of a wide field of clients and gave them international acclaim. What stands out as the characteristic feature of MVRDV is an adherence to reality and the need to strip the eye of preconceived ideas. The operational methodology that stems from this is centered around the application of the "technique" of the datascape, based on extensive and generalized research that tends to assemble an enormous quantity of information so as to proceed to the project phase in a rational, objective manner. This book examines the distinctive features of MVRDV's work and shows the full range of their achievements.

As shopping shifts online and the economic shocks associated with the coronavirus pandemic push bankruptcies to unprecedented levels, retail is facing its own version of the end of days. The arsenal of commercial techniques that retail has developed can no longer function as usual. As a result, the entangled worlds of architecture, fashion, business, and art appear to us in a new light, testifying to a culture that is going extinct. At the same time, retail’s techniques of attraction and distraction have become visible in a new way. Stripped of their use-value, they reveal themselves as techniques of pure display. 'Retail Apocalypse' presents a compendium of case studies, interventions, and object lessons rescued from the bonfire of retail culture, ranging from Friedrich Kiesler’s display windows to Gae Aulenti’s Fiat showrooms; from J. G. Ballard’s dystopian fantasies to TELFAR’s critical utopias; and from Rem Koolhaas to Herzog & de Meuron.

Résumé:
This book sheds light on the contemporary status of phenomenological discourse in architecture and investigates its current scholastic as well as practical position. Starting with a concise introduction to the philosophical grounds of phenomenology from the points of view of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, it presents a critical reading of the works of some leading figures of architectural phenomenology in both theory and practice, such as Christian Norberg-Schultz, Kenneth Frampton, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Steven Holl. Highlighting the main challenges of the current phenomenological discourse in architecture, this book formulates a more articulated method of 'phenomenological interpretation' – dubbed 'phenomenal phenomenology' - as a new and innovative method of interpreting the built environment. Finally, using Tadao Ando's Langen Foundation Museum as a case study, it investigates the architect's contribution to phenomenological discourse, interprets and analyzes the Museum building using the new heuristic method, and thus provides a clear example of its applicability.

Résumé:
Regardless of his sitter whether family member or influential celebrity the portraiture of London-based photographer Nadav Kander (born 1961) shows what makes that particular individual human. His aim is to move beyond capturing an accurate likeness?to access the emotions within, the uncertainty, the shadow as much as the light, the complex sense of self that otherwise lays hidden. “Revealed and concealed, beauty and destruction, ease and disease, shame and shameless,” explains Kander, “These paradoxes are essential to all my work and represent what is common to all my varied subject matter.” This collection, the first book dedicated to his portraiture, shows the range and nuance of Kander’s work. His enigmatic depictions of actors, artists, musicians, authors, sports icons and political leaders?from Barack Obama, John le Carré and Alexander McQueen to Tracey Emin, Robert Plant and Prince Charles are layered and penetrating, revealing unexpected moments of reverie and vulnerability.

Résumé:
This volume documents 12 paper works made from the earliest expired photographic papers in the collection of New York–based artist Alison Rossiter (born 1953), created in honor of Anna Atkins, the first person to illustrate a book with photographs. The exact expiration dates of these papers pinpoint their location on a timeline and coexist with events in world history. No matter what the light-sensitive materials have endured through dormant years, they still respond to chemical development, and the resulting photographic tones are evidence of experience. Physical damage, moisture and mold produce tonal changes when developed. This book, a copublication with the New York Public Library and Yossi Milo, includes all 12 works from the series at actual scale, along with close-up details. The reference dates, which cover world events such as World War II, and art historical references such as Picasso’s Blue Period, are included at the back.

Résumé:
Louis I. Kahn is one of the most influential and poetic architects of the twentieth century, a figure whose appeal extends beyond the realm of specialists. In this book, noted Kahn expert John Lobell explores how Kahn's focus on structure, respect for materials, clarity of program, and reverence for details come together to manifest an overall philosophy. Kahn's work clearly conveys a kind of "transcendent rootedness"--a rootedness in the fundamentals of architecture that also asks soaring questions about our experience of light and space, and even how we fit into the world. In Louis Kahn: The Philosophy of Architecture, John Lobell seeks to reveal how Kahn's buildings speak to grand humanistic concerns. An architecture book that touches on topics that addresses the universal human interests of consciousness and creativity, Louis Kahn: The Philosophy of Architecture helps us understand our place and the nature of well-being in the built environment.

Résumé:
What began as an academic initiative to improve the quality of life of the poor strata of the population has now become a professional “do tank” offering services that cover the entire spectrum of urban development. The celebrated Chilean architect, winner of the 2016 Pritzker Prize and Director of the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, Alejandro Aravena (born 1967) founded Elemental in 2001 in his hometown with the goal of alleviating social deprivation directly instead of hoping for a balance of income relations. Besides building public facilities and public housing, Elemental also develops new approaches for the reorganization of resources and the potential of cities by means of projects devoted to infrastructure and transportation. This volume, first published in 2013 and now back in print, documents the social activity and history of the international architectural team and sheds light on its financing strategies, for example through participatory building.
