Résumé:
With the exception of poster art, French graphic design has enjoyed little recognition on the international stage – until now. This new book tells the story of the development of design in the France. French graphic design has thrived on a multitude of external influences from places as far afield as Russia, Switzerland, Poland, Germany and Hungary. The designers here are legendary artists, actually some of the world’s most revered: French artists and artists who made Paris their home - Man Ray, Brassai, Cassandre, Leger, Duchamp, Mallarme to name just a few. "Graphic design in France" documents the emergence of graphic design as a culture in France and illustrates how it has come to the fore in recent years with a great burst of vitality in poster art, typography, editorial design, magazine design, information graphics, multimedia and television. This book places the tradition of French graphic design amidst the greater aesthetic languages of fine art, iconography, urban architecture, sculpture, communication art, fashion, literature, and much more.

Résumé:
Crowds explores the key role assumed by human multitudes in modern life by means of a graphically innovative, multi-author volume in which essays, word histories, and personal testimonies are woven together into a multiperspectival and multilayered group portrait. The portrait in question includes analyses of market crowds, crowds in modern art and literature, modern assemblies as compared to their premodern and ancient counterparts, modern sports crowds, human multitudes and mass media such as photography and cinema, crowds as political actors, and the emergence of crowd-centred discourses in social sciences such as psychology, anthropology, and sociology. Contributors include Stefan Jonsson, Allen Guttmann, Susanna Elm, John Plotz, Christine Poggi, William Egginton, Haun Saussy, Joan Ramon Resina, and Charles Tilly, with testimonies by authors such as Greil Marcus, Richard Rorty, Michel Serres, Alain Schnapp, Michael Hardt, T. J. Clark, and Susan Buck-Morss. The book represents the main output of one of the Stanford Humanities Lab’s prototype “Big Humanities” projects.

Résumé:
The first section of this publication reproduces an extensive selection from the variegated posters and programmes that Reitsma designed since 1990 for 84 different DNO productions. Entire pages from several programmes have been reprinted on the original paper. The second half presents earlier and other work by this designer made for other clients, predominantly from the institutional and cultural field. This includes exhibition catalogues as well as books on architecture and photography. This graphic diptych is separated by a text collage composed of statements by and about Reitsma. Contributions by art critic Paul Hefting and dramaturge Klaus Bertisch of De Nederlandse Opera, views expressed by fellow designers, quotes from the professional literature, newspaper articles and- last but not least- Reitsma’s own opinions provide a lively picture of the world of this graphic designer. The reader is given a good impression of the development in Reitsma’s recognizable work and the ideas from which it sprung.

"Committing to paper the movements, postures, and words of the people I meet gives me the illusion that I am close to them. I don’t speak to them, I only watch them and listen to them. Yet the emotions they arouse in me are real. I may also be trying to discover something about myself through them, their attitudes or their conversations." Taking Annie Ernaux’s unique artistic endeavour to "describe reality as through the eyes of a photographer and to preserve the mystery and opacity of the lives I encountered," this project by writer and curator Lou Stoppard uncovers the profound ways the written and visual image can inform and inflect on one another. In doing so, it proposes a new way of thinking about literature and photography, and the ways in which shared themes – such as class, travel, social stereotypes, and individual identity within the modern urban environment – might be explored between these two forms.

Résumé:
In "Faking Death", Penny Cousineau-Levine presents Canadian art photography since 1952 as a coherent body of work and articulates a provocative framework for its interpretation. Contrasting Canadian photography with American and European traditions, she shows that Canadian photographers are often preoccupied with a place that is "elsewhere," a doubling and a duality that also occur in Canadian literature, film, and political life. Exploring the ambivalent preoccupations Canadian photographers have with death and dying, bondage and entrapment, she argues that the forms of death depicted in the works are 'faked' and express a collective Canadian wish for a symbolic passage to national maturity. Penny Cousineau-Levine discusses the works of over 120 artists. The book includes 16 colour reproductions and 150 duotones of photographs by artists such as Raymonde April, Geneviève Cadieux, Lynne Cohen, Donigan Cumming, Evergon, Janieta Eyre, Charles Gagnon, Thaddeus Holownia, Geoffrey James, Michel Lambeth, Ken Lum, Shelley Niro, Gabor Szilasi, Diana Thorneycroft, Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, and Jin-me Yoon.

Résumé:
In recent years, landscape has become increasingly recognised as a topic of central importance to a wide variety of disciplines. To a large degree this recognition has been based upon an expanding appreciation of the political aspects of landscape, its ideological character and effects. "Landscapes and Politics" is an innovative cross-disciplinary volume of new writing which brings together, in a strategic and productive encounter, a broad variety of critical work currently being done in this field. With 28 papers and five photo essays "Landscapes and Politics" presents material by scholars and practitioners from anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art history, cultural studies, English and American literature, film studies, fine art, geography, history, landscape architecture, philosophy, political science, and religious studies. As an important marker of current methodologies, research and practice across these different disciplinary areas Landscapes and Politics is an invaluable resource. It will be of interest to all those concerned with current discourses and debates on landscape and its representation.

Résumé:
This vast panorama spans more than two millennia of Western attempts to invent the perfect city, cradle of the ideal society. Embracing not only architecture and town planning but also art, literature, philosophy, and politics, the book takes us through the imaginary environments of a wide variety of fascinating and often controversial movements and figures, including Plato, Filarete, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas More, Thomas Jefferson, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, Charles Fourier, Etienne Cabet, Robert Owen, William Morris, Ebenezer Howard, Bruno Taut, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, the European Situationalists, the Japanese Metabolists, Archigram, Superstudio, and many more. The ideal cities in this richly illustrated book exist for the most part in the domain of ideas. Ruth Eaton explores the ability of ideal cities to stimulate reflection and change, and she suggests under what conditions they might continue to exercise their vital function in relation to the urban environment of the future. The book is generously illustrated with 300 imagess, 250 in colour.

Résumé:
Anni Albers (1899–1994) has long been revered as a trailblazing weaver, textile designer, and visual artist; she also was an insightful and eloquent writer, and her books On Designing and On Weaving are canonical writings in design history. "Anni Albers: Constructing textiles" explores the ideas of materiality, construction, and architecture across her body of work, establishing her legacy as a thinker, theoretician, and innovator. The book’s essays include essential writings by Albers herself on the making and meaning of textiles, as well as new pieces by Glenn Adamson on her relationship to architecture, Karis Medina on the material and technique of her weavings, Amy Jean Porter on her writing, and Jeffrey Saletnik on East Asian influences in Albers’s work and thinking. Among the book’s hundreds of beautifully reproduced images are works held in private collections that have never before been published. An essential volume in the literature about modernism, this book reinforces Albers’s position as a leading figure in twentieth-century art.
