Résumé:
This detailed examination of I. M. Pei's new wing of the German Historical Museum in Berlin was published to coincide with the unveiling of the extension in 2003. The glass building, with its triangular footprint and seemingly weightless curved staircase, offers a striking departure from the museum's older structures, and plays an important role in Berlin's current architectural and cultural renaissance. Essays from architectural scholars comment on Pei's design, provide a history of the Arsenal building and site, and place the Show House in context with the architect's other important museum structures, including those built for the National Art Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the legendary Glass Pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre.

The changes which Information Technology has brought to all areas of our lives have been dramatic. Even in architecture it´s influence has been far-reaching, creating new processes opening up exciting new prospects. In this book, Peter Eisenman, Derrick de Kerckhove, and Antonino Saggio write boldly on the challenges which now face young architects. The IT Revolution offers opportunities which were previously undreamt of, but at the same time, danger lurks in the realm of virtuality with its implication of unlimited possibilities. Furio Barzon uses examples from contemporary architecture to underscore the three text contributions and also places them in the context of state of the art technology and future developments.

Résumé:
"A House in Japan" examines the Japanese home as a site of architectural inquiry—an intimate scale through which ideas about space, structure, and domesticity are continually reimagined. In a context shaped by constraint, precision, and cultural continuity, the residential realm becomes a space of subtle provocation and quiet experimentation. The projects in this volume are not guided by aesthetics alone, but by spatial intelligence. Each home is rigorous in design, elastic in use, and attuned to the rhythms of daily life. "A House in Japan" presents works that privilege clarity over excess and intent over display. It is a study of how architecture, when quietly radical, can propose new ways of living.

Résumé:
As models and paradigms, patterns have been helping to orient architects since the Middle Ages. But patterns are also the basis of the history of ornament, an aesthetic phenomenon that links all times and cultures at a fundamental level. Ornament – and hence pattern as well – was abolished by the avant-garde in the first half of the twentieth century, but the notion of pattern has taken on new meaning and importance since the 1960s. Today the use of generative computerized methods is opening up new ways of talking about an idea that is becoming increasingly abstract and dynamic. Pattern explores the question: what are the notions of pattern that must be discussed in the context of contemporary architecture?

Résumé:
In the south of the Netherlands lies the limestone plateau of the Sint-Pietersberg. As early as the Middle Ages, people started using limestone as a building material. Underground mining resulted in an immense network of caves, its corridor walls preserving a huge living archive, left behind by block breakers, tourists, people in hiding, soldiers, and priests. Fossils of Sauria have been found, sieges have taken place, people have disappeared, and treasures have been stored (such as Rembrandt's Night Watch). Around 1960, Jan Spee started photographing these corridor walls, which he meticulously mapped and organised. Compiled by Sven Gerhardt (NL), this book gives an overview and provides context and cross-references to Spee’s images.

Résumé:
From Roman times to the present, knowledge of plants and their cultivation have exerted a deep impact on cultural changes. This book highlights the religious, artistic, political, and economic consequences of horticultural pursuits. Far from a mere trade, horticulture profoundly affected Jewish and Persian mystical poetry and caused deep changes in Ottoman arts. It contributed to economic and political changes in Judea, Al Andalus, Japan, Yuan China, early modern Mexico, Europe, and the United States. This book explores the roles of peasants, botanists, horticulturists, nurserymen and gentlemen collectors in these developments, and concludes with a reflection on the future of horticulture in the present context of widespread environmental devastation and ecological uncertainty.
